1 Unit One A Healthy Foundation

2 Objectives The student will be able to: Differentiate between health & wellness. List and describe the 5 Dimensions of Wellness.

3 Journal #1 1. What does it mean to be healthy? 2. What is the difference between health & wellness?

4 Health & Wellness Health and wellness are not synonyms. Health is the combination of the dimensions. Wellness is a lifestyle and is not an end to be achieved. Wellness means that one strives for balance throughout his/her whole life. On the other hand, health would be that a person wants to lose weight and lower blood pressure. Once he/she does this, he/she is considered healthier. Health is a goal one can achieve while wellness is a dynamic concept that continues for a lifetime.

5 Note Taking Strategy You will use a guided notes sheet during the power point. Write down anything that is underlined.

6 Your Total Health Big Idea Being in the best of health throughout your life means making healthy choices and practicing healthful behaviors.

7 Who is Responsible for your Health? You can develop the knowledge and skills you need to take charge of your health for a lifetime. YOU! Health (vocab) The combination of physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being.

8 Your Total Health There are FIVE dimensions of wellness that are all equally important areas.

9 Physical Health Get eight to ten hours of sleep each night. Physical health is all about how well your body functions. Eat nutritious meals and drink at least eight cups of water per day. Avoid risk behaviors, such as tobacco, alcohol, and drug use. Also avoid sexual activity. Bathe daily. Brush and floss your teeth each day. Engage in at least 60 minutes of exercise daily.

10 Mental Health Mental health is about your thoughts. It is a reflection of: How you think. How you learn. How you cope with situations.

11 Emotional Health Emotional health is about your feelings. It is a reflection of: How you express feelings. How you cope and manage your emotions.

12 Mental/Emotional Health Characteristics of mentally and emotionally healthy people. Enjoy challenges. Accept responsibility for their actions. Have a sense of resiliency in hard times. Can express their emotions in appropriate ways. Usually can cope with life s stresses and frustrations. Have a positive attitude. Make thoughtful and responsible decisions.

13 Spiritual Health Spiritual health involves having a feeling of purpose in life. A strong sense of values, first learned from your family. spiritual health (vocab) A deep-seated sense of meaning and purpose in life. Value: The ideas, beliefs, and attitudes about what is important, that help guide the way you live.

15 Social Health Family Social health is shown in how you get along with others and how you maintain healthy relationships. Friends Teachers Coaches Co-Workers/Teammates Other Community Members

16 Keeping a Balance Each dimension of your health should be balanced!

17 Keeping a Balance Wellness (vocab) An overall state of wellbeing, or total health.

18 The Health Continuum Your health at any moment can be seen as a point along a continuum, or sliding scale.

19 Hypertension Video Clip The Health Continuum Healthy will improve your wellness to avoid chronic diseases. Chronic Disease (vocab) An ongoing condition or illness, such as heart disease, obesity, or cancer.
