KEYWORDS attachment, borderline personality disorder, mother-infant intervention, parenting BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER (BPD) is a severe disturbance of personality functioning characterized by affective disruption, identity problems, poor impulse control and persistent difficulties in interpersonal functioning (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 1994). Although adults with BPD are receiving more attention in the research literature (e.g. Bateman & Fonagy, 1999; Hoffman & McGlashan, 2003), the LO u I s E N E w M AN completed undergraduate degrees in psychology and medicine in 1988 and post-graduate studies in psychiatry and child psychiatry in Her clinical practice has, since that time, been predominantly with high-risk populations and specifically with mothers with borderline personality disorders and their infants. Dr Newman has trained in the assessment of attachment in infants and adults and achieved reliabilities in both the SSP and AAI. She has been used as a consultant to child protection services and government departments in the area of early childhood development, assessment of parenting capacity and childhood development, assessment of parenting capacity and child abuse. CAR o L I N E s T E v E N s o N is a Clinical Psychologist who was awarded her PhD in December Her main scientific contributions to date concern adult attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, for which she developed and tested the first successful psychological intervention programme. More recently, building upon her clinical experience working with children, adolescents and their families, she has begun collaborating with Dr Louise Newman (Director, NSW Institute of Psychiatry) on research on mother-infant attachment in Borderline Personality Disorder.
