1 Professional Reiki Practitioner Diploma Course - Written Assessment This written assessment paper consists of a series of questions to test your compliance with the National Occupational Standards (NOS) for Reiki and the Reiki Core Curriculum (CC). It was devised by the Reiki Council in 2014 to help ensure that applicants for CNHC registration meet the competence and underpinning knowledge requirements of the National Occupational Standards (NOS) and the Reiki Core Curriculum. 2 1. Have you given at least 75 Reiki treatments to other people? Yes No 2. Have you completed a minimum of 100 hours of Reiki self-treatment? Yes No 3. Explain what you understand by the term red flag symptoms and give 3 examples of red flag symptoms. 4. Below is an example of a common condition with a brief description. Please give 5 other examples of common conditions and briefly describe one of these. You can use our example as a guideline. Example: Diabetes Brief Description: Diabetes refers to a group of conditions that are characterised by high levels of blood glucose. There are two main types of diabetes, type 1 and type 2. Type 1 diabetes is characterised by lack of insulin caused generally from an autoimmune response which destroys the insulin producing beta cells of the pancreas. Type 1 diabetes is treated with insulin. Type 2 diabetes is metabolic in nature and is due to high blood glucose levels relative to insulin levels and is treated through dietary changes and exercise.

4 Working with clients Section 1 Initial Request For Treatment 6. What information do you provide the client when booking a treatment? (When booking an appointment for a client, think about the information the client will need to make an informed choice about the treatment and the information required by the client to get to the appointment. What would you want to know about a therapy to help you decide if it is something you would pay for?) 7. Why you would refuse to offer a Reiki treatment?. (There are on occasion circumstances when Reiki is not immediately appropriate or suitable. This can be due to a number of factors that can affect the well-being of the client and/or the therapist. Think about the client s health, behaviour, state etc.) 8. What information do you obtain from the client before booking their first appointment? (There are certain details that are essential for you to have before you book an appointment for a client. This is the information you require and should obtain from the client at the first contact with the client, whether it is in person, via or over the telephone. This information will help you to decide whether Reiki is immediately suitable.)

5 9. What contra-indications are there when Reiki is used on its own? (Think about the effects of Reiki when used with no other medical interventions.) 10. What advice would you give to a client who is on regular medication prescribed by a medical practitioner? (This is important for the well-being of the client. Think about the changes that Reiki can initiate and any implications of these changes to prescribed medication.)

6 Section 2 Initial Meeting With Client 11. Describe how you explain Reiki to a new client: (At the first appointment, it is good practice to explain what Reiki is, as well as specific aspects of the treatment to help the client understand and feel comfortable with the Reiki treatment they are going to receive. Think about the questions and concerns a new client would have and how you would allay any doubts or fears.) 12. How do you explore the client s need for Reiki, in order to develop an understanding of how best to treat them and how do you explore the client s expectations of Reiki? (Understanding the client and their condition(s) and underlying causes is the first step in deciding how to treat them. Explain how you do that. Clients may have preconceived expectations of what Reiki can do for them - these need to be realistic. Describe how you ensure each client has realistic expectations of Reiki.) 14. How do you adapt your initial interview for a person who has a communication difficulty, e.g deafness? (There are ways of communicating other than verbally that you can use for clients that have difficulty communicating. Think about what other forms of communication are available and you can use to make yourself understood.)

7 15. How do you maintain appropriate boundaries with your clients in a professional setting? (As a therapist it is essential to maintain professional boundaries with clients. Boundaries covers areas such as dependency, detachment etc.) 16. What steps do you take to help the client take responsibility for their healing? (For the most effective healing a client needs to take responsibility for their healing. As a therapist you can take steps to help your clients take responsibility. Think about the way you work with your clients to help ensure they take responsibility for their healing and well-being.) 17. How do you help empower the client to take responsibility for their own healing? (Reiki treatments can be empowering for a client. The experience a client has during the treatment and the way you discuss and explain their condition and any lifestyle/emotional causes can help to empower the client. Think of the ways you can help to empower your clients.)

8 18. Are there any situations for which you would decide that Reiki was not appropriate? Yes No If yes describe why. (Reiki is intrinsically safe as a therapy, but there are circumstances when Reiki should not be used, either for the well-being of the client or the safety of the therapist. Think about this before you answer this question.) 19. Give some examples of when and why you would refer a client to another therapist or a medical practitioner. (There a number of valid reasons why a therapist would refer their client to another therapist. Think about the client s and your expectations of Reiki, your level of experience and proficiency, the rate of improvement etc.) 20. How do you find out if the client would prefer a treatment with hands-on or hands-off the body and what would you do if they requested a preference contrary to your normal method of Reiki practice? (Clients wishes with regards to how the treatment is carried out should be paramount, unless of course it conflicts with your ethics.)

9 21. How would you treat someone who has a condition in an area of the body that you should not normally touch e.g. breasts 22. How do you check that the client understands what the treatment involves and that they wish to proceed with it? (Think about the legal requirement for informed consent.)

10 Section 3 The Treatment 23. How do you prepare the room / space and yourself for giving a Reiki treatment? (The room needs to be a calming and safe space for the client. Think about appearance, atmosphere, temperature etc. Your own appearance and demeanour needs to reflect a professional approach.) 24. What type of responses might a client experience during or after a Reiki treatment and what might you say or do in response? (Reiki treatments can cause certain reactions or responses. Think about any emotional and physical reactions that clients have or may experience during and after the treatment and describe how you would deal with them.) 25. If your client displayed distress, was clearly in pain, asked you to pause the treatment or required urgent medical attention what would you do? (Think about the client's feelings and emotional/physical condition and how you could alleviate any discomfort or concern.)

12 Section 4 Aftercare 27. What aftercare advice / techniques do you give your clients? (To help clients manage their condition(s) and to make the effects of the Reiki treatment longer lasting, it is helpful to give some aftercare techniques and advice. Give some examples of aftercare advice and any techniques clients can use for themselves.)

13 Section 5 Administration 28. How do you store client records? (Think about the two possible ways of storing client records and the procedures for each, not just the method you use.) 29. What information do you record about your client and the treatments? (Think about the information a professional therapist requires to keep for all clients.) 30.
