1 Stress and Your Body Katie Seleskie, Katy McClure Overview Grade Level: 8 th Area: Stress Management Emphasis: Self-Management Objectives: Students will define stress. Students will distinguish between distress and positive stress. Students will list 6 common stressors for teens. Students will describe the body s stress response. Students will discuss how stress can affect relationships. Students will complete Good Stress, Bad Stress worksheet individually. Students will create a Stressful Comic Strip while in groups. Affect: Students will value positive stress. State or National Standard Performance Indicators: 8.1.4: Explain the interrelationships between behaviors, the functioning of body systems, and overall health Analyze the possible causes and results of conflict among youth in schools and communities. Time Requirements: one class Materials & Preparation Materials: Good Stress, Bad Stress worksheet (one per student) Stressful Comic Strip group performance event (one per group of 5-6 students) Pencil/Paper/Markers Preparation: Duplicate Good Stress, Bad Stress worksheet (60 copies) Duplicate Stressful Comic Strip group performance event (10 copies)

2 Teaching Steps 1. Introduce Review of Previous Day: Can anyone tell us what you learned in the previous lesson? Who can give me 2 things they learned last class? Overview of Today s Lesson and Why It Is Relevant: Today we are going to move on and talk about stress. Stress is a part of everyday life for everyone. It s important to know what stress is and how it affects the body so that you can effectively deal with stress. Today, we are going to talk about stress, the different the kinds of stress, how your body responds to stress, and how bad stress may affect your relationships with people. 2. What is Stress? Ask: Who can tell me what stress means to you in your own words? Note: Students will give various responses. Bite: Stress is the combination of a new or possibly threatening situation and your body s natural response to the situation. Ask: What is a stressor? Note: Responses will vary. Bite: A stressor is anything that causes a stress response. Stressors can be physical, mental, emotional, or social. Tell: Now that we know what stress is and what causes stress, we are going to talk about the two different types of stress. 3. Types of Stress Tell: There are two types of stress that you may experience in life. Distress is the negative physical, mental, or emotional strain in response to a stressor. Ask: Does anyone know what the other type of stress is called? Note: Answers may vary Bite: Positive stress, sometimes called eustress, is the stress response that happens when winning, succeeding, and achieving while doing something. Ask: What are some examples of stress that you have personally experienced, and would they be distress or positive stress? Example: Forgetting your lunch money (Distress) Being in a car accident (Distress) Getting an A on a test (Positive Stress) Winning a race (Positive Stress) Getting Married (Positive Stress) Having a baby (Positive Stress) Tell: An event that may be good stress for you may be distress for someone else. For example, being in a play, singing a solo, presenting something to the class, competing, or meeting new people may be examples. Tell: Stressors never come one at a time. A major life event such as the death of a loved one or going through family trouble may intensify routine stressors such as quizzes or disagreements with friends. Performance Event: Good Stress, Bad Stress! Tell: We are going to pass out a worksheet. On your own, read the directions and complete the worksheet. You are to decide if the stressor is distress or positive stress and why. Note: Students will complete Name that Stress Worksheet Note: Go over answers with class.

3 4. How Stress affects you Tell: Imagine this situation: You are chosen by your teacher to present an essay that you wrote in front of the class. The problem is that you don t like public speaking. Ask: What would you experience or how would you feel if you were in this situation? What would be some changes that would be occurring to your body? Example: Sweaty hands Increased breathing Increased heart rate Shakiness Nervousness the butterflies Ask: Does anyone know what these responses are called? Bite: The stress response, also called the fight or flight response is your body s reaction to a stressor. This response prepares you to fight a stress or to run away from it. 5. Responses to Stress Tell: There are both short-term and long-term responses to stress. Ask: Can anyone give an example of a short-term response to stress? Bite: Short-term responses to stress include: Dry mouth Feeling sick Tightening of muscles Surge of power Sharpened vision and hearing Tell: If you feel distressed, you may feel emotionally or mentally tired. If the stress is positive, you may feel calm and relaxed. Your body can handle the power surge for only a short time. Continuous distress is related to a variety of side effects. Having some stress in you life is important, but learning to use that stress to your advantage is important. Ask: Now that we know some short-term effects, can anyone give an example of a long-term response to stress? Bite: Long-term responses to stress include: Fatigue Depression Stroke Heart disease Heart attack Diarrhea Constipation Acne Loss of appetite Diabetes Tell: Prolonged distress can be serious and can lead to death. 6. Distress may affect relationships Tell: Distress may affect other people. It can hurt your ability to think clearly, make good decisions, and cause you to unintentionally harm others even if you do not mean to. Some effects of distress include: Being mean to people Angry friends Friends may avoid you Loss of friends Keep you from concentrating Staying positive even when you are stressed can be challenging.

4 Tell: In groups, you will create a comic strip that illustrates how the fight or flight response effects an 8 th grader in a stressful situation. You will illustrate what would happen to the 8 th grader if he/she could not overcome the stressor that caused the fight or flight response. Example: Jalen s dog ate his homework. (teacher will provide illustrated example to students) Note: Teacher will divide students into groups of 5. Performance Event: Stressful Comic Strip Note: Allow students time to finish comic strip Ask and Discuss: Are there any brave groups that would like to present their comic strip to the class? Note: Students will present comic strips to class 7. Summarize and Debrief Debriefing Review and Discussion Points What is stress? What is distress and positive stress? Examples? List 6 common stressors for teens. What is the body s response to stress? How can stress affect relationships? Check for Understanding: Good Stress, Bad Stress worksheet Check for Understanding: Stressful Comic Strip group performance event. Affect Is it important to have positive stress in your class? Assessment Activity Checks for understanding Peformance events Affect Checks for understanding Assessment

6 Stressful Comic Strip Names of group members: _ Directions: On the poster, your group will create a comic strip that illustrates how the fight or flight response effects an 8 th grader in a stressful situation. Your group will illustrate what would happen to the 8 th grader if he/she could not overcome the stressor that caused the fight or flight response. If you have problems coming up with a stressful situation, refer back to the Good Stress or Bad Stress worksheet done earlier in class.
