Welcome to Psychology! We are going to cover some fun and interesting topics this year. To get you started the first thing that I will require is that at some point over the summer you must me and introduce yourself. You must tell me your name and why you are interested in taking Psychology. This must be done prior to the first day of school. See below for my address. PLEASE pay special attention to the 2 at the end of my last name in the . IF you do not put that, I will not receive your . The second activity you will do requires you to read the Introduction and The Cognitive Level of Analysis in your textbook. The pages you are responsible for reading will be uploaded to the school's website along with this instruction sheet. As you read, you will be responsible for completing a reading guide. The reading guide will be uploaded to the school s website. It s important that you complete the reading guide, as you will be able to use it on the quiz you will have upon your return to school in August! This assignment is worth 200 points. Please have it ready to hand in on the first full day of classes. Good luck and should you have any questions please . You must anyway before the summer ends! Oh, please do not print all of the pages you need to read at school! It s too many pages to print out! Amanda.sharp2@knoxschools.org *Reading Guide is on the next page*
Reading Guide-Introduction (Pages-vii-xiii) 1. How does the British Psychological Society define Psychology? 2. Any aspect of human emotion, thinking, or behavior can be looked at using 3 levels of analysis. What are the three levels of analysis for IB Psychology? 3. Describe the 3 levels of analysis. 4. What are the 4 assessment objectives?
5. For each level of analysis, you will have Learning Outcomes (LO) to complete. Each LO will will begin with a command term. List and define the command terms for each assessment level. 1-Knowledge and Comprehension 2-Application and Analysis 3-Synthesis and Evaluation
Cognitive Level of Analysis (Pages ) 6. The Cognitive Level of Analysis (CLOA) studies cognition. Define cognition. 7. IB Psychology looks at mental processes in term of information-processing. How does this approach look at the mind? 8. List 2 widely accepted principles for the CLOA. 9. Define a schema and schema theory. 10. Explain how the Bartlett, 1932 study supports schema theory.
11. How can the Loftus and Palmer, 1974 study be used to support the LO that looks at the extent to which one cognitive process is reliable? 12. One LO asks you to evaluate 2 models of one cognitive process. The Multistore Model of Memory (MSM) is one model. What researchers proposed the model? Describe the 3 stores. How do they differ? 13. How does the Glanzer and Cunitz, 1966 study support the MSM of memory?
14. Explain how Alzheimer s disease (biological factor) can affect our memory. What brain structures are impacted? What specific types of memory are affected? 15. According to Schachter and Singer s Two-Factor theory of emotion, what two factors interact to determine specific emotions? 16. How is the Speisman, 1964 study an example of Appraisal Theory? 17. Brown and Kulik, 1977 were the first modern psychologists to study flashbulb memories (FBM). How did they define them? How does the Brown and Kulik, 1977 study support FBM?
18. How does the Neisser and Harsh, 1992 study refute FBM? 19. Read over the effects of social and cultural factors on cognitive processes. Why is it important for psychologists to study these factors? 20. Many different types of brain imaging technology are used at the CLOA. Why are they useful for researchers at this level of analysis?
21. Summarize each type of research method used at the CLOA. List any ethical concerns with the methods.
