1 Spiritual Gifts and Ministry Overview of the Motivational gift of Giving Intro: Giving, or contributing might be called the gift of special sharing. For giving is the heart of this gift. The Greek word metadidoni is made up of two main parts: The root didomi means to impart, to give, to share, and the prefix meta intensifies the gift by adding the idea of with It is a sharing with others or a spending out of one s life for others. (W.E.Vine) The strong motivation the behind givers or contributors is the support of others. It might even be called the gift of support of others. It might even be called the gift of support. One always feels a sense of support coming out of this gift. Giving, of course, is inseparable from tangible and material items, yet this gift is not restricted to wealthy people, because finances represent only one of the concrete expressions of their gift of giving. Characteristics Illustrations 1. A keen ability to discern wise investments in order to Matthew 6:19 have more money to give away. 2. A desire to give quietly without public notice. Matthew 6: A motivation to give as unto the Lord at the promptings, Matthew 25:35-46 not at mans appeals. 4. A desire to give gifts which are helpful quality. Matthew 2:11 / 26: : An ability to test faithfulness and wisdom by how people Matthew 21:25, 33-35, handle funds. 6. A tendency to practice personal frugality. An ability to be Luke 5:27-32 content with the basic necessities of life. 7. An alertness to see what other people do with their money. Matthew 27:3-8/28: An ability to see financial needs which often tend to be Matthew 15:3-7 / 20:1-16 overlooked. 9. A desire to use giving as a way to motivate others to give. Luke 5:29 Matthew 18:
2 Abuses of the Motivational gift of Giving 1. Giving to sparingly to their own family. - Putting family in the right priority 2. Causing family members to resent gifts to others. 3. Listen to unscriptural counsel on management. - Listen to scripture. 4. Putting pressure on people who have less to give. -Everyone gives as much as he can and wants to give. Cheerful giver 5. Failing to discern God s promptings for a gift. - Listening to God s voice. 6. Judging those who misuse funds rather than advising them. - Advise them. 7. Controlling people or ministries by gifts. - God is in charge not you. 8. Corrupting people by giving too much. - Make sure it is God, and not your own feed. 9. Investing in projects which do not benefit the lives of people. - Making sure that people are the beneficiaries. 2
3 Overview of the motivational gift of Administration Intro: A number of English words depict the Greek word proisremi. Literally it means one who stands in front of others, thus the picture of one leading, or giving instruction on which direction to take. The NEB translates it, if you are a leader, exert yourself to lead. The RSV calls it giving aid. This last thought shows someone not just barking out orders, but in fact giving leadership aid to others. One of the best single words to define this gift would be facilitator. Unlike servants, leaders do not enjoy doing the tasks by themselves. They maintain the church by making things easy for others. The word facilitate literally means promoting the ease of any action or operation. So facilitators help the leadership support and supply effectiveness needs. A prime example of a good administrator or facilitator in the Old Testament would be the character of Nehemiah. Characteristics Illustrations 1. An ability to visualize the final result Nehemiah 1:2-3/ 2:5 of a major understanding. 2. An ability to break down major goals, Nehemiah 3:1-32 into smaller achievable tasks. 3. An ability to know what recourses are Nehemiah2:6-8 available and needed ~or each good. 4. A tendency to remove himself from distracting Nehemiah 5:1-13 details in order to focus on the ultimate goal. 5. A willingness to endure reaction (opposition) Nehemiah 4:8-18 from insiders and outsiders in order to reach the ultimate goal. 6. A need for loyalty and confidence from those who Nehemiah 5:1-13 are being directed and served. - He demanded loyalty - 7. An ability to know what he should and should not Nehemiah 4:13 delegate to others. 8. An ability to inspire and encourage workers by cheerfulness, Nehemiah 4:14 approval, praise and challenges. 3
4 Abuses of the motivational gift of Administration l. Viewing people as human recourses rather than human beings. - Treat humans as humans. 2. Using people to accomplish personal ambitions. -Pastors are hard to their people. -Their identity is masked into the work. 3. Showing favoritism to those who appear to be more loyal. -It is not the best thing to do. The moral of others will suffer. 4. Taking charge of projects which are not God s directions. -Listen to God s word and voice. 5. Delegating too much work to other - The delegator must stop and must have time to help. 6. Overlooking serious character faults in valuable workers. - Don t sell out Godly principles to accomplish a project, or goal. 7. Being unresponsive to suggestions and appeals. - Learn to make other a part of the team 8. Failing to give proper exhortation and praise the workers. - Troops will grow vain and weary. He has to do something to get the moral up. - Don t just get a bigger whip. - Sell your vision. 4
5 Overview of the motivational gift of Mercy Intro: Mercy seems to be both one of the most familiar and one of the most needed gifts. The gift of mercy is the motivation to identify with and to comfort and relieve those who are in need or stress. It aims at helping others by empathizing with them and doing for them. People with the gift of mercy are obviously strong feeling! people. As servers are doers, so mercies are feelers. Their special gift is to feel or sense where people are and to reach out in a supportive and compassionate way. Mercy meets the sympathetic and emotional needs of the body. In our society, men or women with the gift of mercy are very often misunderstood. Sometimes they are hard to get to know. Many have even been taught to repress their feelings, thus their gift, and have often been accused of being weak or gullible. They often find it difficult to reprove others, yet operate in a quite strength which operates in truth. Characteristics Illustration 1. An ability to sense genuine love. A great John l:2-3 vulnerability to deeper and more frequent hurts from the lack of love. 2. A need for deep friendship in which there is John 13:3 19:26 / 20:2 21:7 mutual commitment. 21:20 3. A tendency to react harshly when intimate Luke 9:54 friends are rejected. 4. A greater concern over mental joy or defense 1 John 1:3-4 / 4:18 than physical concerns. 5:13-14 / 3:17 5. A tendency to attract people who have mental John 13:23-26 and emotional distress. 6. A need to measure acceptance by physical John 13:23 closeness and quality time together. 7. A desire to remove the cause of hurts rather 1 John 3:11-15 than look for benefits from them. 8. A tendency to avoid decisions unless Acts 4:13,19-20 they will eliminate greater hurts. 9. A tendency to be attracted to those with the Luke 22:8 Acts 3:1-11 5
6 spiritual gift of Prophecy 4:13-19 / 8:14 Abuses of the motivational gift of Mercy Failing to be firm and decisive when necessary. - You do allot of good things for the wrong motives. 2. Tacking up offenses for those who have been hurt. 3. Basing decisions on emotions rather than on reason. - Learning to reason. Life is not a emotion, it has emotions. 4. Prompting improper affections from those of the opposite sex. - Mercy people are physical.- their touching may be misunderstood. 5. Cutting of fellowship with those who are insensitive to others. - Mercy people tent to hang around mercy people. 6. Reacting to God s purpose in allowing people to grow through suffering. 7. Sympathizing with those who are violating God s standards. - Not listening to their convenience. 8. Establishing possessive friendships with others. - Other will survive without you. They will not survive without God. 6
