1 Name of Lesson: Character Strengths Lesson 16: Thinking about Character Strengths in Oneself Topic: Reviewing the Character Strengths and how they work in one s life Gifted Standard and element(s): G2AG1: Students will reflect upon their innate and developed abilities. a. Recognize and develop areas of strength in self. b. Recognize and develop areas of weakness in self. G2AG2: Students will be respectful members of their communities. b. Recognize the value of individual differences. d. Recognize the strengths of others. f. Contribute as a positive and productive community member. G2AG3: Students will be self-directed learners e. Seek opportunities for self-growth. Unit Essential Question(s): How do character strengths and virtues help us and others to be our best selves? How can I recognize the use of character strengths and virtues in others? How can I choose which character strengths to use in differing situations to achieve both academically and personally? How can I use character strengths and virtues to be a positive and productive community member? Lesson Questions: What are the character strengths? How can character strengths be used in my life to help me? Which character strengths do I seem to use the most? Lesson Summary: In this lesson, students will review all the character strengths. Next, they will identify their own personal strengths and determine how they can be used to help them in reaching their life goals. Assessment Description/Performance Task: Constructed response Informal assessment Performance task Selected response Brief Description of Assessment: Students will complete a graphic organizer identifying character strengths that they use in their own lives. Students will then complete a reflection about how their character strengths can be used to help them achieve their life goals. Instructional Methods: Lesson Overview: Hook: Video: Review character strengths we have studied. Student self-reflection on their personal character strengths and how they can be used to achieve their life goals. Hook/Activator: Show you tube video on character strengths

2 Teaching Strategy: 1. Have students review their past work on character strengths this year. Look at the VIA Classification of Character Strengths by Virtue Category PowerPoint (in Lesson 2 attachments folder). After you review each of the character strengths, have students complete the Character Strengths Graphic Organizer (attached). Ask students to indicate which character strengths that they think they own or show in their lives. They must pick a minimum of 10, but can complete more. To help guide them, ask students, What activity were you good at, or which did you enjoy the most as we explored the character strengths in class? What other activities in school have you enjoyed? What activities do you do well in life in general? What comes naturally to you? In the third column on the organizer sheet, ask students to check three to five strengths that they think are their signature strengths, or those that they use most often and with greatest ease. Give students time to complete the Character Strengths Graphic Organizer, as you circulate among them to help. 2. Discuss life goals. Ask the whole class to brainstorm some goals. Then, share one of your own life goals. For instance, I chose to be a teacher because I want to help others to be better people. Other goals may include the following: going to college, being successful in one s career, excelling at a sport, or being a moral, strong person. 3. Discuss how using the character strengths has helped you (the teacher) in meeting the goal you mentioned. In the example above, you might say: For instance, perseverance helps in going to college. It took me several years to finish because I didn t have the money for tuition, and I had to work and go to school at the same time. That meant I took fewer classes at a time. Also, social intelligence was important in my success, because I had fun while picking good friends and avoiding people who were not a good influence. Try to mention a few strengths that were at work in reaching your goal so that you can explain the concept of strengths fluency, or knowing which strength, or combination of strengths, to use in a situation is the real secret to success. You may even mention using a strength that didn t come easy to you, such as self-regulation for discipline in meeting deadlines. Share the analogy that you are like a conductor leading an orchestra, and the character strengths are like the instruments. Every song is different and only certain instruments are used, depending on the song. 4. Distribute the Self-Strengths Reflection sheet to each student and ask them to complete it. This activity will invite students to think about strengths they use the most, and will prepare them for the Badge Project in the coming lessons. Summary by the Learner: Students will complete the Character Strengths Graphic Organizer as they identify how they use strengths in their own lives. Next, they will complete the Self- Strengths Reflection page (attached), identifying possible signature strengths that they have. They will then tell about how those strengths, (as well as others) can be used to help them achieve their goals in life. Differentiation: If students have difficulty completing the graphic organizer, work with them independently, or within a small group For students who excel at thinking about character strengths, encourage them to complete the entire graphic organizer Allow students more time to complete the reflection, even as a homework assignment
