1 Preparing for a World War... Yes, you need more than soldiers! This packet will help you understand what ANY country must do in order to fight in a world war but specifically looks at what the U.S. government and economy required citizens to do to mobilize the country. Each group has its own directions and questions you must answer. HOMEWORK Finish this packet! Create a propaganda poster on some aspect of WWI you learned about today Group 1 Analyzing propaganda There are FOUR different propaganda posters. Please take no more than ONE if you are in a group so others can also work on this group. You do not have to use complete sentences. A Little Americans do your bit Who does the boy represent OVERALL? Why is the poster encouraging the boy to eat oatmeal and corn cereals rather than wheat cereals? What does the cereal bowl represent and why is the boy saluting it? B Join the Land Army How is the woman dressed and what is she doing? What is the land army? How can women help in the war effort? C Help Them What country do you think the soldiers represent? In this poster what are bonds? What is the message of this poster? D Do It Now What are the goods? How can young men Do It Now like the poster asks? Thinking about all of the posters Which do you think is the most effective and why?
2 Group 2 Songs of World War I A Using this website, find the song titled America Here s My Boy, and Over There. As you listen to each song, follow along with the lyrics and answer the questions associated with each song.
3 Group 3 Drafting men and women for war In your book, read the following information on p. 241 Raising an Army, p. 243 American military women, and p Women s war efforts and answer the questions. Americans in Europe What did the Selective Service Act do for the U.S. war effort? Once soldiers were drafted into the army and reported to camp, what were four obstacles they faced? In the early 1900s American society was segregated by color. How could segregation also be seen in the military at this time period? Why were there segregated units in the military? American military women Of the few women who were able to participate in WWI, list four roles women were able to do for the war effort. Women s war efforts At home in the U. S. why would women have to do men s jobs? List all the ways women impacted the war effort at home. How did the end of the war impact these women who worked during the war? Group 4 How did the government prepare its citizens at home to participate in a world war? In your book, start reading at Mobilizing the Economy on p (stop at Supplying U.S. and Allied troops) and answer the questions. Explain the two ways President Wilson raised money to pay for the war. What is the War Industries Board (WIB) and what was its purpose? DO NOT USE THE WORD REGULATE.
4 Was the WIB a success at home why or why not? What was the purpose of the Lever Food and Fuel Control Act? What was the purpose of the Food Administration and how did Herbert Hoover promote its goal to Americans? (Hint three ways or slogans ) What are victory gardens and why would they help Allied troops? What was the purpose of the Fuel Administration and how did Harry Garfield promote its goal to Americans? (Hint three ways or slogans ) Why did the U.S. have to produce so much food, supplies, and money for the war effort? Group 5 Besides propaganda, how did the government mobilize the minds of Americans? In your book, start reading at Influencing Public Opinion on p. 250 and go through the end of the section and answer the questions. Once the U.S. officially entered WW1 what was President Wilson s number one goal? How did Americans start to show their distrust towards German people in America? Explain the Espionage Act of 1917 and the Sedition Act of Why did many Americans disagree with these two laws?
5 Explain the problem behind Charles Schenck passing out leaflets opposing the war and what was the eventual decision by the Supreme Court. Do you agree or disagree with the decision the Supreme Court made why or why not? If you need help understanding the decision think about it like this does the government have the right during a time of war to limit freedom s to protect the entire country and armed forces?
