Level 4 Unit 4-6 Test

Independent Reading Color Preference Color preference is an intensively researched area. Almost a hundred years of investigations have explored the relationship between feelings, emotions, and color. In the late 1950s a research specialty developed that investigated the hypothetical relationship between colors and various moods and emotions. From this research came the popular concepts of "secure colors," "happy colors," "active colors," and so on that have become so favored by popular authors, interior designers, and fashion consultants without a full understanding that these responses are only one tiny and questionable part of the color/light response. Early research in color preference lacked adequate controls. The three psychological dimensions of color hue (the color itself), value (the lightness or darkness of the color), and saturation (the intensity of the color, that is, the amount of redness in red) were rarely controlled in experiments and were not considered in statistical outcomes. This led to severely skewed or even invalid results. Later studies did provide adequate controls, and some of them showed that blue is a preferred color while yellow is not. Researchers wanted to know why. One of the areas they explored was background. Was it possible that the background against which the colors were displayed made a difference in color preference? It was not until the work of Helson and Lansford in 1970 that color combination effects were systematically studied. Previous studies had been run with the colors displayed on neutral backgrounds of gray or black. The Helson-Lansford study was the first to try something different and is probably the single best controlled experiment on determining preference of color combinations. The researchers presented 125 color chips against 25 colored backgrounds under five different lighting sources to 10 subjects for a total of 15,250 ratings. Subjects were shown 12 color chips on a background and made absolute judgments on a nine-point scale. The results showed that color preference ratings were the product of an interaction between light source, background color, and object color. Background color was the single most important component of preference judgments due to contrast effect. Men were reported to prefer blue, violet, and green. Women preferred colors in the red, orange, and yellow range. The Helson-Lansford study is important to color research because it was the first to show that color preference could be influenced by variables other than those of the color itself. It showed that the interaction of the light source with the color Level 4 Unit 4-6 Test 1

was of prime significance in color preference. These color studies may give the impression that color preference is a static state, invariable across time and circumstance, but evidence is beginning to indicate an alternative view. When office workers were asked to select the color they preferred every fifteen minutes over the course of five to forty hours, color choices varied with time. Individuals did not prefer one color every time. This has tremendous implications for trying to decipher color preference. To summarize, many factors influence color preference, including: Variations in the saturation or value of the color The interaction between light source, background color, and the color of the object being viewed The contrast between colors in combination The size and placement of light sources Finally, the preference for one color over another is not a static state but changes over time. Color perception is a highly complex process. Attempts to simplify it generally lead to inaccuracies and the perpetuation of myths. 1. An introductory sentence for a brief summary of the passage is provided below. Complete the summary by selecting the THREE answer choices that express important ideas in the passage. Some sentences do not belong in the summary because they express ideas that are not presented in the passage or are minor ideas in the passage. Write letters of the answer choices in the spaces where they belong. Many studies have been done on the question of color preference. Answer choices Certain colors are consistently associated with certain emotional responses. Early research into color preference was flawed. The Helson-Lansford study demonstrated that color preference could be influenced by variables other than changing the color itself. Color perception is a complicated process and is difficult to simplify. (E) Color researchers prefer to use neutral backgrounds of gray or black. (F) The Helson-Lansford study had subjects rate colors on a nine-point scale. Level 4 Unit 4-6 Test 2

Independent Listening Listen to part of a lecture in an archaeology class. The class has been discussing the ancient Olmec civilization. 2. Why does the professor mention ceramic shards, clay figurines, and other broken artifacts? To list typical objects on which Olmec writing has been found To help explain how archaeologists were able to estimate when a stone tablet had been carved To emphasize that artifacts are rarely found in very good condition To show how artifacts from the Olmec and other civilizations had mixed together in the same area 3. What does the professor say about the writing on the stone tablet? It will probably never be deciphered. It was carved at a date later than originally believed. It is different from other writing of the region. It may have been created by a civilization other than the Olmec. 4. Why does the professor say this: To stress that there are many aspects of the Olmec civilization that need to be studied more thoroughly To raise the possibility that the tablet records the history of the Olmec people To suggest that in the future it may be possible to decipher the writing on the tablet To point out that recent discoveries have made experts question the information in some history books Level 4 Unit 4-6 Test 3

Reading-Listening-Writing Surviving Mass Extinctions During Earth s history, there have been a number of mass extinctions, short geological periods during which most species on the planet became extinct because of extreme environmental changes. However, even mass extinctions had survivors, and according to some biologists, those survivors must have been a truly special group of organisms. Genetic traits determine an organism s adaptability its ability to cope with adverse environmental conditions. Any species able to survive the extreme environmental changes causing a mass extinction must have a genetic constitution that makes it a very adaptable species indeed. The kinds of environmental changes that cause mass extinction are global events. That is why so many species are affected. The changes must have been extreme, not just in some places but almost everywhere. Any species, whether plant or animal, that lived through the mass extinction must have the ability to survive extreme changes in temperature, available water, available light, and so forth. Also the survivors of a period of mass extinction must, in particular, have been very good at competing for food and other resources. The conditions bringing on mass extinctions caused extreme disruptions in the sources and quantity of food available. So the surviving species must be those that are able to outcompete other organisms and thereby ensure their own continuing survival. Level 4 Unit 4-6 Test 4

5. An introductory sentence for a brief summary of the passage is provided below. Complete the summary by selecting the THREE answer choices that express important ideas in the passage. Some sentences do not belong in the summary because they express ideas that are not presented in the passage or are minor ideas in the passage. During Earth s history, there have been a number of mass extinctions, short geological periods during which most species on the planet became extinct because of extreme environmental changes. Choose 3 answers. Answer Choices (E) (F) Some species have the ability to survive periods of mass extinction. Adaptability is the ability to change one s genetic traits quickly. Adaptability is a characteristic of some species that allows them to adjust to extreme changes in their environment. Sometimes a small change in the environment can cause a period of mass extinction. When too many species are competing for the same food supply, a period of mass extinction begins. Species that survive a period of mass extinction must be very good at competing for food with other species. Now listen to part of a lecture on the topic you just read about. 6. What does the professor think may have been responsible for the survival of the coelacanth? Its widespread distribution (B Its ability to avoid predators Its ability to withstand temperature extremes Its unexposed habitat 7. What point does the professor make about species when she discusses allterrain vehicles? A species cannot be expected to survive every type of disaster. A species adapted to many different types of habitats is more likely to survive disasters. Most species will not survive a global flood. Most species are equipped to thrive in only one type of habitat. Level 4 Unit 4-6 Test 5

8. Listen again to part of the lecture. Then answer the question. What point does the professor make about the shellfish? (A They were more successful than other marine animals. Some of them evolved into predators. They were not highly adaptable. No one is really sure why they became extinct. Writing Summarize the specific points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they challenge points made in the reading passage. Level 4 Unit 4-6 Test 6
