9.2.2 Lessn 8 Intrductin In this lessn, students will explre the passage At least first listen t what I have t say thrugh it is nt yurs alne (lines ). Students will explre the develpment f the central idea f the rle f fate in Laius s murder thrugh an analysis f key details in the argument between Oedipus and Cren. Students will cntinue t develp their understanding f Oedipus s pinin f prphecy. Students will build upn writing and discussin skills as they participate in a Silent Discussin t the fllwing prmpt: Hw des Oedipus's reactin t the prphecy refine r alter yur understanding f a central idea in the text? Fr hmewrk students will cntinue t read their AIR text and will respnd briefly in writing t a reflective prmpt that asks them t use recently acquired vcabulary t synthesize their understanding f the argument between Oedipus and Cren. Standards Assessed Standard RL Addressed Standard SL Determine a theme r central idea f a text and analyze in detail its develpment ver the curse f the text, including hw it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details; prvide an bjective summary f the text. Initiate and participate effectively in a range f cllabrative discussins (ne-n-ne, in grups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners n grades 9-10 tpics, texts, and issues, building n thers ideas and expressing their wn clearly and persuasively. 1

Assessment Assessment(s) The learning in this lessn will be captured thrugh a Quick Write at the end f the lessn. Students will answer the fllwing prmpt based n the clse reading (citing text evidence and analyzing key wrds and phrases) cmpleted in the lessn. Hw des Oedipus's reactin t the prphecy reveal hw his beliefs abut Teresias and prphecy have changed? High Perfrmance Respnse(s) A High Perfrmance Respnse may include the fllwing: Oedipus s reactin t the prphecy reveal that he n lnger seems t believe in prphecy, especially if it cmes frm Teiresias. Oedipus desn t believe Teiresias s prphecy that he is guilty, because he thinks Teiresias has been cnvinced by Cren t lie t him. If Teiresias were nt wrking with yu, he wuld nt name me as the ne wh murdered Laius (lines ). Accrding t Oedipus, Teiresias is nt a true prphet because he did nt reveal the truth years befre when Laius was killed. Why did this man, this wise man, nt speak up? (line 684) Sme students may suggest that Oedipus ignres Cren s suggestin t cnfirm the things he is saying by g[ing] t Delphi and ask[ing] the prphet because he desn t believe in Teiresias s prphecy r trust prphets (line 728). 4 Activity 1: Intrductin t Lessn Agenda 5% Begin by intrducing the agenda and sharing the assessed standard fr this lessn: RL In this lessn, students will analyze the key details f Cren s interrgatin int the murder f Laius in rder t explre the develpment f the central ideas f Oedipus the King. Students lk at the agenda. Activity 2: Hmewrk Accuntability 10% Instruct students t talk in pairs abut hw they further supprted their Quick Write frm Lessn 7 with evidence frm the text. Ask several pairs t share ut their evidence with the class. Student pairs discuss and share hw they used evidence t further supprt their Quick Write assessments frm Lessn 7. Activity 3: Masterful Reading 10% Intrduce the Quick Write assessment (Hw des Oedipus's reactin t the prphecy refine r alter yur understanding f a central idea in the text?). Explain t students that this is the lessn assessment and the fcus fr tday's reading. Students read the assessment and listen. Display the Quick Write assessment fr students t see. Have students listen t a masterful reading frm At least first listen t what I have t say thrugh it is nt yurs alne (lines ). Instruct students t cnsider the fllwing questin as they listen t the masterful reading. Cnsider having students hear this exchange in tw vices t enrich their understanding f this cnversatin as an argument and exchange between Oedipus and Cren. Cnsider playing an audi versin that uses tw actrs, r asking tw students t prepare ahead f time t read this excerpt alud in class. Students fllw alng in their text, reading silently and cnsidering the fllwing questin. What advice did Cren give t Oedipus (lines )? Student respnses may include: Cren persuade[d] [Oedipus] t send fr Teiresias (lines ). Cren tld Oedipus that he shuld listen t what the prphet had t say. 4

Activity 4: Lines Reading and Discussin 40% Instruct students t discuss the fllwing questins in pairs. Then ask them t share ut their respnses. Why des Oedipus cnsider Cren s advice a betrayal? Student respnses may include: Oedipus thinks Cren s advice t listen t the prphet is a betrayal because the prphet ended up accusing Oedipus f the crime: Yu yurself are the very man yu re lking fr (lines ). Oedipus is accusing Cren f setting him up t take the fall fr Laius s murder. What is the relatinship between Cren and Oedipus? Hw might this relatinship make Oedipus feel abut Cren s actins? Students shuld cnnect the family relatinship they are brthers-in-law between Oedipus and Cren prvided in the Dramatis Persnae and are yu nt married t my sister? (line 697) t infer that this betrayal may be even mre hurtful t Oedipus because it cmes frm a family member. As this questin prmpts students t return t their understanding f the cnversatin between Oedipus and Teiresias, it may help t direct students back t the interchange in lines in rder t find this evidence t supprt their answer. Organize students int pre-established hetergeneus small grups. Ask grups t read alud frm Hw lng is it since Laius thrugh as the ne wh murdered Laius (lines ) and wrk tgether t respnd t the questins that fllw. Students read alud in grups and discuss the fllwing questins. What questins des Oedipus ask Cren? Underline them in yur text. Student anntatins shuld identify the fllwing questins (lines ): Hw lng is it since Laius... was killed s brutally? Was Teiresias as skilled in prphecy? Did he ever mentin me? Did yu nt investigate the killing? Why did this man, this wise man, nt speak up? 5

What des the repetitin f this wise man suggest abut the tne and meaning f Oedipus s questin, Why did this man, this wise man, nt speak up (line 684)? What des he think abut Teiresias s wisdm and ability? Students shuld identify that the tne f the statement this wise man is sarcastic, because Oedipus s line f questining casts dubts n Teiresias s skills as a prphet. Oedipus des nt truly believe that Teiresias is wise. The questin is accusatry, implying that Teiresias is nt truly a wise man because he didn t speak up in the past (line 684). What evidence des Oedipus prvide t build his argument against Teiresias? Student respnses may include: Thrugh a series f questins, Oedipus builds the argument that if Teiresias was telling the truth nw abut Oedipus s guilt in the crime f Laius s murder, then he wuld have accused Oedipus many years ag (line 677). Cren s answers t Oedipus s questins reveal that althugh he was cnsidered a prphet when Laius died, Teiresias never said anything when Laius was murdered (line 681). Why des Oedipus questin Teiresias s skills as a prphet? Cite evidence frm the play t supprt yur answer. Oedipus questins Teiresias s skills as a prphet because Teiresias has accused Oedipus f cmmitting the crime, but he didn t accuse him when the crime happened: 'back then did he ever mentin me? N never (lines ). Oedipus is implying that Teiresias is nt a real prphet but is lying t make Oedipus lk guilty: if Teiresias were nt wrking with yu, he wuld nt name me (lines ). Oedipus believes that Teiresias is wrking with Cren. Instruct students t reread independently, in pairs, r in their current grups frm If he says this thrugh Thse wh are unreliable give rash advice (lines ), underlining the questins that Cren asks Oedipus. Students reread and anntate t the fllwing prmpt: What questins des Cren ask Oedipus? Student anntatins shuld include the fllwing questins (lines ): Are yu nt married t my sister? (line 697) And yu tw rule this land as equals? (line 699) And am I nt third, equal t yu bth? (line 701) 6

In yur view, wuld anyne prefer t rule and have t cpe with fear rather than live in peace, carefree and safe, if his pwers were the same? (lines ) S hw can being a king be sweeter t me than ryal pwer withut anxiety? (lines ) S why wuld I give up such benefits fr smething else? (lines ) Ask students t share their anntatins with their grups and then discuss the fllwing questins. Explain t students that they will cntinue the wrk f cllabrative discussin utlined in SL Remind students that these discussin skills scaffld tward further discussins in this unit and t the discussin-based End-f-Unit assessment in Unit 3. What is Cren suggesting abut the respnsibilities f being a king thrugh the statement S hw can being a king be sweeter t me than ryal pwer withut anxiety? Hw d his questins develp his argument fr his inncence? Students shuld pint t Cren s argument: S hw can being a king be sweeter t me than ryal pwer withut anxiety? (lines ) t suggest that Cren believes that being a king causes a lt f stress and it ften means yu have t d things yu dn t want t d. Cren argues that since he has all the pwer f a king because f his familial relatinship t Oedipus: And am I nt third, equal t yu bth (line 701), but nne f the difficulty and stress, he wuld have n reasn t try t verthrw Oedipus. Sme students may extend this bservatin t include Cren s statements: if I were king myself, I d be ding many things against my will (lines ) and nw I get everything I want frm yu, but withut the fear (lines ) t supprt Cren s argument that being a king brings lts f truble and stress. Wh des Cren suggest Oedipus g t fr prf f his inncence? Hw des this further develp Cren s argument? Cren tells Oedipus t g t Delphi and ask the prphet (lines ). Cren is arguing that since he brught back exactly what was said frm his trip t speak t Apll he culd nt pssibly be guilty (line 730). It may be helpful t remind students t recall that the temple f Apll is in Delphi, which is where Oedipus sent Cren t learn frm [Apll] what [Oedipus] might d r say t save ur city. 7

Instruct students t reread independently frm Oedipus s If sme cnspiratr mves against me thrugh Cren s it is nt yurs alne (lines ). Then direct students t discuss the fllwing questins in grups. Students reread independently and discuss the fllwing questins in grups. What des Oedipus s use f my in his exclamatin Oh Thebes my city! suggest abut hw he understands his respnsibilities as king (line 764)? Oedipus s use f my reasserts his feelings f sle wnership and respnsibility fr the peple f his city. Students may als suggest that Oedipus s use f the pssessive reasserts his psitin as king f Thebes and therefre the mst pwerful man in the city. Activity 5: Silent Discussin 30% Instruct students t respnd briefly in writing t the fllwing prmpt: Hw des Oedipus's reactin t the prphecy reveal hw his beliefs abut Teresias and prphecy have changed? Remind students t use the Shrt Respnse Checklist and Rubric t guide their written respnses. Display the prmpt fr students t see, r prvide the prmpt in hard cpy. Students independently answer the prmpt using evidence frm the text. After students have had an pprtunity t respnd in writing t the prmpt, instruct them t cmplete a Silent Discussin in their grups, using their written respnse. Students pass their written respnse arund in their grups. At each pass, students respnd briefly t the riginal respnse r anther cmment a grup member has made. Remind students t use evidence t supprt, build upn, r respectfully cntradict what ther grup members are writing. Once students have cmpleted a full rtatin and their riginal respnse is returned t them, have students submit their respnse fr lessn assessment and accuntability. Display the Speaking and Listening Rubric and Checklist and remind students t cnsult it as they engage in the Silent Discussin. Students participate in a Silent Discussin t the fcusing prmpt. 8

This Silent Discussin allws an pprtunity fr students t cmplete a brief written respnse fr lessn assessment but als prvides the pprtunity fr students t practice cllabratin skills as they are expsed t and respnd t different viewpints. Using the Speaking and Listening Rubric, circulate t bserve students mastery f SL See the High Perfrmance Respnse at the beginning f this lessn. Activity 6: Clsing 5% Display and distribute the hmewrk assignment. Fr hmewrk, instruct students t reread the sectin f the text frm this lessn and respnd in writing t the fllwing prmpt: Use several f the fllwing vcabulary wrds t summarize the argument between Oedipus and Cren: allegatins, betrayed, reprach, spurred, and rash. Remind students t use the Shrt Respnse Checklist and Rubric t guide their written respnses. Als, instruct students t cntinue their Accuntable Independent Reading thrugh the lens f their fcus standard and prepare fr a 3 5 minute discussin f their text based n that standard. Students fllw alng. Hmewrk Reread the sectin f the text frm this lessn, frm At least first listen t what I have t say thrugh it is nt yurs alne (lines ).
