The Hero Archetype Hannah Meier

What is a hero? A hero is someone who is admired for their qualities, idealized for courage and outstanding achievements. Most of the time, heroes are men, as they are brave and of higher rank. In addition, a hero is someone who demonstrates goodness and tries to go against the evil.

Odysseus Odysseus portrays many hero- like qualities. First off, Odysseus can be considered a hero because of his ability to trick the Cyclops into believing his name was nobody. Therefore, Odysseus was not nervous to complete such an action, in which could risk his life. It was possible the Cyclops could have taken Odysseus life for not releasing his true name. Moreover, Odysseus was able to keep his men together through their battle by earning their loyalty and devotion. Together, Odysseus and his men faced dangers. Odysseus can be classified as heroic for being brave to lie to the Cyclops, as well as being a leader to his men.

Hercules was famous for taking on tasks which required great strength. Hercules fought giants, freed Prometheus, slayed animals, and captured animals. He also possessed exceptional strength. In the picture to the right, it looks as if Hercules is attempting to hold back and possibly kill the animals at his side. He took on an adventure known as the Twelve Labors, which were feats which seemed impossible, yet he was able to complete the tasks with the help of others. Hercules

King Arthur King Arthur is a heroic man, taking on many tasks others would be hesitant to attempt. King Arthur can be recognized for his battles against the forces of the Roman Empire, his arguments against the giants and for conquering countries, like Scandinavia. King Arthur was a hero because he was brave, as he accomplished many achievements. Furthermore, King Arthur was a famous ruler. Therefore, he can be known as a hero because he was courteous enough to help rule others and lead them to success.

Superman Superman is known as a hero. He applies his superpowers in almost every circumstance. Superman is known for his lack of arrogance and putting others before himself. He is easily recognizable and he fights to do the right thing, depending on the situation. Furthermore, Superman stops bad guys, in addition to saving people.

Simba Simba is a good example of a hero, in which he is determined to help his family, and do what is best for them. He is courageous and determined to protect his family. Simba felt guilty over his dad s death, making him stronger than he originally was. Simba was then able to face his fears of becoming King, as he first believed he didn t deserve the position.

Batman (Bruce Wayne) trained extensively to achieve perfection in various ways. After witnessing the death of his parents, he swore to fight crime in order to prevent the deaths of others. Through his actions, he protected the city of Gotham. Even though Batman doesn t possess any superpowers, he is fearless enough to face criminals. He puts his life in jeopardy, which makes him bold. Batman

Mulan Mulan is known as a legendary warrior. She was willing to place her life before her father s, so he would not die during battle. Mulan risks putting her life in danger, in order to save her dad from having to fight, considering he is not well enough to go to war. She dresses up as a man to take his position. Mulan went to war, fighting courageously. She is definitely brave for fighting the Huns. The extensiveness for which she fought is something a woman typically wouldn t do. Therefore, she can be characterized as a hero, daring enough to risk her life.

Marlin, from Finding Nemo, can be characterized as a hero. Ever since Marlin s wife died from a shark attack, he has been very cautious about protecting his son, Nemo. Nemo is captured by divers and Marlin is hurt by this. He is brave enough to encounter various conditions through the ocean in order to get his son back. Marlin is heroic, in which he finds Nemo after a long search, and doesn t give up. Since Marlin doesn t give up, he can be known for giving his best effort to save his son. Throughout the movie, he puts Nemo s life before his. Marlin

Katniss Katniss is a good example of a hero because she leads by example, puts others before herself and is brave, in which she cared more about others than herself. For example, she would not let her sister go in the games, so Katniss took her place.

Augustus Waters is a hero, even though he is very sickly. He is an unsung hero, caring for Hazel and doing his best to make her happy. Augustus stuck by Hazel s side through the worst of times. Augustus cares for Isaac and Hazel, trying to make an impact on them, so that he isn t forgotten. Additionally, he s a hero for being brave enough to make someone else happy (Hazel) before himself. Although he is sick, you d never know, as he battles through every task. For example, even though Hazel is not well, he takes her on the trip of her life to Amsterdam. Augustus is not really rewarded for all of the exceptional tasks he accomplishes. Augustus Waters

What have I learned about archetypes? Why are archetypes important? Archetypes can be mistaken for stereotypes. After completing this assignment, I have learned how to differentiate between archetypes and stereotypes. Archetypes are specific characters or situations, as well as real people. Furthermore, archetypes can be both traditional and contemporary. Traditional heroes have evolved over time. Traditional heroes can be both similar and different to today s modern heroic figures. Moreover, stereotypes are characteristics, not characters. An example of a stereotype would be that women don t appear as smart as men do. Stereotypes are often negative characteristics. After learning the difference between archetypes and stereotypes, I can easily separate archetypes from stereotypes. While completing the slideshow, I came to realize that archetypes are universal symbols. Based on my knowledge, archetypes seem to reappear in society constantly. Therefore, we are learning about archetypal characters because they often reflect people s characteristics in real life. Archetypes are important because they relate to real people. As a result, this causes us to become attached to certain characters because we are similar. We are learning about archetypes because they are practically the foundation of stories. For example, most stories have a hero, a mother figure, a villain and so on. Finally, it seems reasonable that we are learning about archetypes because of their subtle effect on society. Archetypes have had a subtle effect on society because they influence our ideologies. For example, archetypes influence our thinking patterns, which is why we would say a criminal is a bad person, even if we didn t know their background story. In conclusion, I have learned various things about archetypes and realize that we learn about them because they impact society.

Hero Music Hero Music (Theme Song) There were a few reasons as to why I chose the Avengers Theme Song to represent the hero archetype. To begin, the Avengers Theme Song has a tone in which can portray a hero. When I think of heroes, the tone of the Avengers Theme Song immediately comes to mind. From my perspective, the song sets a militaristic mood for the audience. People who are enlisted in the military often depict heroic qualities. In conclusion, the theme song in which I selected indicates a hero is nearby and ready to apply their bravery to a situation.
