Peterborough Dementia Action Alliance is a partnership of organisations, individuals, businesses and community groups working together with the shared aim of transforming the quality of life of people with dementia and helping Peterborough to become a dementia-friendly city. Want to write something for this newsletter? rob.henchy@peterborough.gov.uk In this newsletter: Prime Ministers Challenge on dementia 2020 Creating a dementia friendly generation New National Family Carers Involvement Network Volunteer Event at the DRC Synergy Timetable Worried about your memory? 2 Peterborough Dementia Action Alliance Membership Prime Minister s Challenge on Dementia 2020 On 21 February 2015, the Prime Minister s challenge on dementia 2020 was launched. The 2020 Challenge is an aspirational document, which builds on the achievements of the Prime Minister s challenge on dementia , and aims to identify what needs to be done to ensure that dementia care, support, awareness and research are transformed by The main aspirations set out in the document include: Funding for dementia research on track to be doubled by 2025; In every part of the country people with dementia having equal access to dementia diagnosis; To reduce the national average wait for an initial assessment for dementia to six weeks; Every person diagnosed with dementia having meaningful care following their diagnosis, which supports them and those around them; All NHS staff having received training on dementia appropriate to their role, and newly appointed healthcare assistants and social care support workers having undergone training as part of the national implementation of the Care Certificate. An expectation that social are providers provide appropriate training to all other relevant staff; 2

3 Cures or disease modifying therapies on track to exist by 2025; An international dementia institute established in England. The full document is available here - The document does not mandate actions, or make spending commitments. What happens in the five years to 2020 will be determined by the next government in the context of the Spending Review. DAA members played a key role in shaping this document through the DAA Impact Survey and 2020 Vision consultation following the Annual Event. Creating a Dementia-Friendly Generation Young people can play an important role in the creation of dementia-friendly communities. Not only do a third of young people know someone with dementia, but they are the leaders, employers, researchers, carers and adults of tomorrow. Increasing young people s awareness can help reduce stigma and help people to live well with dementia now and in the future. Alzheimer s Society is encouraging all schools and youth groups to include dementia awareness in their activities, to help us create a dementia-friendly generation. The new section of the website is aimed at young people, parents, teachers and youth leaders providing information and resources to increase young people s understanding of dementia, including new teaching resources for Key Stage 3 (11-14 year olds). All communities are encouraged to engage schools and youth organisations in their area, encouraging them to use the resources or host a Dementia Friends session. To let Alzheimer s Society know what you are doing, for further support, or to request the resources youngpeople@alzheimers.org.uk 3

4 New National Family Carers Involvement Network The National Dementia Action Alliance and Life Story Network are pleased to inform you that following on from the successful Carers Call to Action Campaign a new National Family Carers Involvement Network for family carers of people with dementia is being established with support from the Department of Health. Life Story Network CIC will be hosting the new network and working hard to secure resources to ensure a sustainable legacy from the successful campaign The Carers Call to Action, which comes to its natural conclusion at the end of March 2015, with resources from the DAA being provided to support this transition period. The Carers Call to Action and Life Story Network share the same principle of recognising that family carers of people with dementia are experts by experience and can play a significant role in supporting other carers, influence policy and shape improved responsive local commissioned services. The objectives of the network will be to: Engage carers to raise the profile of the needs of people with dementia and family carers and influence policy. Equip carers with the knowledge and skills to advocate for improvements in standards and better services. Encourage and enable family carers to become involved and campaign for improved services and standards of care. Empower carers by developing confidence in their capacity to support each other and to make a difference in their community. Carers and former carers who wish to play a more active part in the network will be trained, coached, nurtured and supported in their role. Strategic support for the new network has been agreed with the Carers Trust and Mersey Care NHS Trust. In addition to this we have had considerable support from carers themselves, who recognise the value the involvement network will offer them to share their experiences and support other carers. Life Story Network CIC would welcome hearing from other partners who feel they can provide a contribution to establish this much needed national network for carers of people with dementia. Please contact Pat Broster via at pat@lifestorynetwork.org.uk if you believe you can support us in any way. 4

5 Dementia Resource Centre Volunteer Engagement Network Meeting Last month saw the first Alzheimer s Society Volunteer Engagement meeting take place at the Dementia Resource Centre. The event was attended by 12 volunteers from across the Peterborough area, all give up their valuable time to work with us at the Dementia Resource Centre. Kevin Bowyer Service Manager, Nyarai Maziso Information Worker, and Debbie Holmes Volunteering Officer, were present at the meeting. Kevin delivered an informative talk on the history of the Alzheimer s Society, our services and plans for the future which was followed by a short interactive quiz on dementia. An open forum then provided an opportunity for people to ask questions as well as share their thoughts and ideas on what works well or could be improved. The session then concluded with a buffet lunch. These events will run every 6 months as a thank you to all the volunteers, without whose help the Society would be unable to offer such a wide range of support groups. Anyone interested in volunteering for Alzheimer s Society should contact Debbie Holmes.Debbie.holmes@alzheimers.org.uk Tel:

If you, or someone you are close to, have been feeling confused, agitated or forgetful, it may be a good idea to visit the GP. If you are concerned about someone else, you may like to suggest that you accompany them on the visit. It is possible that these symptoms are an indication of dementia. This term describes a group of symptoms caused by the physical impact of disease or injury on the brain. There are a number of different conditions that lead to dementia, including Alzheimer's disease, vascular disease (including stroke) and dementia with Lewy bodies. Each person will experience dementia in his or her own individual way, but there will usually be: a decline in memory, reasoning and communication skills a gradual loss of the skills needed to carry out daily activities confusion If you want to know more about dementia please visitwww.alzheimers.org.uk Or call the Peterborough branch of the Alzheimer s Society on
