Principal s Message The projected growth in the numbers of the older adult population has created an unparalleled urgency for qualified geriatric health care providers and high-quality care for older adults, This demands a timely initiative to address the issues of elderly. At this juncture our institution with the financial support of NISD, New Delhi conducted Three month certificate course in Geriatric care during the year Dr.S..Nirmala, Principal
2 Activities of Regional Centre in Geriatric Care during the year Three Month Certificate Course in Geriatric Care for Care givers/bedside Assistants Due to increasing urbanization and tendency to form nuclear families, the elderly do not seem to be getting appropriate care. Elderly have multiple complex chronic conditions requires a diverse range of skills for addressing the physical, mental, cognitive and behavioral needs.hence developing professionals in care giving is the need of the hour. At this juncture three month certificate course in Geriatric care was conducted wthe financial support of NISD, New Delhi during the year The major objective of this course is to impart intensive training that will empower the youngsters to understand and handle the problems and needs of the elders in a professional and fruitful manner. Programme overview: During , we have successfully conducted two 3 months certificate course in Geriatric care for care givers /Bedside assistants-2 courses were conducted 1 st course from7 th December, th March, 2017 & 2 nd course 28 th December, th March, This course is an appropriate mix of theoretical session with field exposure and practical training. As per the norms of NISD, sixty candidates were selected through selection mode of Group Discussion followed by an interview. The selected candidates were under the age group of 18 to 30 years with a minimum qualification of 10 th standard pass. This year totally 53 students from low socio economic background were benefitted by this course.
3 Teaching Methodology: As the main objective of the course is skill development of care givers of elderly, it leans heavily on the practical aspects of care giving Different teaching methods were adopted to maintain interest which included participatory learning strategies such as hands-on activities- assistance in daily activities of elders, Care to the bed ridden elders and preparing a nutritional meal, and interactive activities such as small group discussion on various topics in geriatric care management Details of the course curriculum: Curriculum of this course laid emphasis on Geriatric care and gerontology such as concept of ageing, over view of changes occur in the organs during old age, the physical, mental and social problems and basic needs of ageing, Legal protections and schemes for elderly, health care of the aged, fundamentals of healthcare, The food guide pyramid, Meal planning,food safety, disability and Rehabilitation are the papers dealt with. Demonstrations on the following topics were organized so as to provide an opportunity to acquire skillss on health care of the aged Wound care, Back care management Bowel and bladder care, Oral medication Dementia/memory losss behavioral management Prevention of falls, and Checking and monitoring vital signs.

5 Field visit: Field visits are the part of the curriculum, hence an arrangements have been made to visit the following special geriatric care Centres and old age homes : Special Lecture by Dr.Ragul Padmanaban Geriatrician at Grand world Elder Care Clinic 1. St. Joseph Old Age Home for Destitutes, Podanur, 2. St.Jacob Old Age Home,Chettipalayam, 3. Shewin Old Age Home, 4. Grand World Elder Care Unit 5. Ozanam Old Age Home The field visits enhanced learning capacity by observation and interaction with older people and it had a positive influence on students attitudes towards older people. To promote understanding and experiences of geriatric care facilities The students were able to know the following aspects during filed visit: Field visit to St.Joseph Home for the Aged
6 first-hand and practical information about the rules and regulation of the home through interaction with the administrator and staff as well as the residents of centres types of old age care diet and medical care given to the inmates of the home the life style of the aged people residing in old age homes emotional status of the elders The students are capable of assist the elders with personal care tasks like bathing dressing grooming oral care foot care and Gentle massage. Students not only gained knowledge during field visit and internships but also opportunities were provided for hands on experiences on age care which refined their knowledge, skills and their professional abilities. PLACEMENT Placement is the one of the powerful indicator of effectiveness of the course conducted. Various multispecialty Hospitals in Coimbatore and elder care centre were contacted by the institution to provide placement for the students. At the end of the course the knowledgeable confident and motivated geriatric care givers found placements in hospitals as nursing assistants/attendants and Working as residential care givers.
