3 Center For Medicare & Medicaid Services Launches Initiative Personal identity theft affects a large and growing number of seniors. People age 65 or older are increasingly the victims of this type of crime. This is why the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is readying a fraud prevention initiative that removes Social Security Numbers from Medicare cards. Our aim is to help combat identity theft and safeguard taxpayer dollars. Starting April 2018, CMS will begin mailing new Medicare cards that include a new Medicare Number. The mailings will be staggered throughout the year, with completion expected by April Here is What You need to Know Your new Medicare Card will have a new number because Medicare is removing the Social Security Numbers from Medicare Cards. This change will help protect your identity. Medicare will mail you a new card between April 2018 and April Understand that mailing a new card will take some time. You may receive your card at a different time than that of your neighbor. You will be issued a Medicare Number that is unique to you. Once you get your new card, destroy your old one and start using the new one. Keep your information safe. Protect yourself by making sure no one can get your personal information from your Medicare Card. CMS will NEVER ask for private information over the phone. Ensure your address is up to date. The Residents chose the following meal to be served on Memorial Day including: Cheeseburger on Bun, Potato Salad, Corn on the Cob and Ice Cream for dessert. Father s Day meal was chosen to include: Roast beef, Mashed potatoes and gravy, Carrots, Potato Roll/ Butter and Chocolate Cake for dessert. Nutrition Focus of the Month Geriatrics Geriatrics is the study of the chronic diseases frequently associated with aging, including their diagnoses and treatment. Geriatric nutrition is the medical nutrition therapy provided for older adults. Geriatric nutrition may be provided in all settings such as home, community settings, long-term-care facilities, and hospitals. Gerontology is the study of normal aging through the sciences of biology, psychology, and sociology. Gerontological nutrition focuses on health promotion, risk reduction, and disease prevention in the older population. Both geriatric and gerontological nutrition require the expertise of the registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) or Nutrition and Dietetics Technician, Registered (NDTR), to interface sound nutrition principles in context with the variety of lifestyles, diverse backgrounds, and health challenges among the older population. Achieving this requires an appreciation of the individual's autonomy in terms of how he or she defines quality of life. It is in this framework that the RDN and NDTR provide guidance in promoting medical nutrition therapy. Nutrition Prescription for Long-Term Care Surveyors of long-term-care facilities regularly recommend and enforce the practice of supplementing energy and protein intake in residents at risk for altered nutrition. It is generally accepted practice that food be the first-line therapy recommended for residents, followed by medical nutritional supplements (oral supplements). It is the position of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics that the quality of life and nutritional status of older adults residing in health care communicates can be enhanced by individualization to less restrictive diets. Literature has shown that oral supplements provided between meals (rather than with meals) increase nutrient intake in residents who receive them. If these interventions fail to generate sustained, adequate energy and protein intake, enteral feedings (tube feedings) may be necessary, provided the therapy is consistent with the wishes of the resident and family or caregiver. Surveyors with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services regularly review nutrition care plans to evaluate whether or not the foods and supplements being provided to each resident are consistent with that resident s individual food and beverage preferences. Luckily, here at GMCF we have both an RDN (Tina Huotari) and a NDTR (Emmy Tuzee) to meet the individualized clinical nutritional needs of our Residents including individualized care plans. 5 Understanding Osteoporosis Osteoporosis is a disease that consists of weakened bones and increased fracture risk. It's sometimes called a "silent disease" with few, if any, noticeable changes to your health to indicate you have it. In fact, the first indication of osteoporosis often is when a bone breaks. Although it can strike at any age, osteoporosis mostly occurs in people over 50. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, half of women and one in four men over the age of 50 will break a bone due to osteoporosis. Taking steps to build bone health while you are young can literally make or break what will happen to your bones as you age. However, at every age, a healthful diet and regular weight-bearing exercise are important, helping to ensure bone tissue continues to build. Bone Health and Diet Bones may seem dry and dull, but they are far from it. They are constantly under construction; certain cells break down bone tissue and other cells use the calcium and nutrients from foods you eat to build new bone. If you are not physically active or getting the nutrition you need, bones will suffer becoming less dense, weaker and more likely to fracture. Bone-Building Nutrients Calcium, the major nutrient needed to form new bone cells, is vital for bone health. Bones store more than 99 percent of the calcium in your body. Some calcium-rich foods include milk, yogurt and cheese, and calcium-fortified soy milk, cereal and fruit juice. Other good sources include soybeans and dark green leafy vegetables. National Skilled Nursing Care Week rounded out with a hunting presentation, music and a fly fishing demonstration. Calcium cannot build bones alone. It works with other nutrients including vitamin D, vitamin K, potassium, fluoride and magnesium to increase bone density and strength. Foods vs. Supplements Supplements can't duplicate what foods offer naturally. If you are not able to drink milk due to lactose intolerance, try lactose-free milk and calcium-fortified foods, both are available here at GMCF. If you wish to discuss food options further just ask for Tina Huotari (RD) or Emmy Tuzee (DTR), both are readily available in the dietary department which is located on the ground floor here at GMCF.
