AwAreness education AdvocAcy research The OStEOpOrOSiS report A NEWSlEttEr FrOm the NAtiONAl OStEOpOrOSiS FOuNdAtiON NOF Celebrates National Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month this May May 2011 Volume 26 Number 2 E very day, NOF is committed to educating people about bone health and osteoporosis. This is especially important this month, when we place a particular emphasis on awareness and prevention. This year is no exception. NOF supports the approximately 10 million Americans who have already been diagnosed with osteoporosis, but we also focus on the 34 million women and men at risk. We believe it s never too early or too late to take steps to improve your bone health. Recently, NOF and Harris Interactive conducted a national survey about the awareness and prevention of osteoporosis. The results were promising, but also suggested that more work needs to be done. Among women who responded to the survey, almost 70% believe that the disease can be prevented. continued inside In this Issue in the News NOF Events Ask the Expert National Bone health Alliance
from the C O v E r NOF Celebrates National Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month this May (continued) However, among this group, only 50% recognized exercise as a method of osteoporosis prevention and only 27% believed diet and eating right are also necessary for preventing the disease. Surprising only 34% of respondents had never heard of osteoporosis at all. At NOF, we encourage people to understand the basics about osteoporosis, starting with knowing the risk factors associated with the disease. We strive to reinforce these messages through our publications, partnerships, programs and resources offered on our Web site, This year, we are challenging people to start more conversations about osteoporosis with friends and loved ones to increase the number of people who know about the disease and want to take action to prevent its onset. Join NOF and Celebrate National Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month: Understand your risk factors Strive to get enough calcium, vitamin D and bone healthy exercise every day Talk with your doctor about when you should have a bone density test Start a conversation about bone health and osteoporosis with someone you care about
in the N E W S Can Studying Bears Help Our Bones? W hile you may know that bed rest and inactivity are major causes of bone loss and osteoporosis in humans, you may be surprised to learn bears are able to maintain their bone strength following months of hibernation each winter. Can bears lead us to new ways to prevent bone loss and broken bones? While we don t yet know the answer to this question, researcher Seth Donahue at Michigan Technological University and his team are currently researching this biological process in bears. Dr. Donahue has already determined that instead of losing calcium during hibernation, bears actually reabsorb calcium back into their bones. Dr. Donahue believes that the action of the parathyroid hormone, which plays an important role in human bone health, works differently in bears. To research these differences further, Donahue and his colleagues have created a cloned version of bear parathyroid hormone which is being used to develop a new osteoporosis medication for possible use in humans. Let s hope that this research leads to newer and better treatment options for preventing broken bones in the future. Dr. Donahue s research has been made possible from grant funding from the National Institutes of Health. And, in case you are concerned, no bears are being used for this research. N E W N B h A d i r E C t O r A N N O u N C E d The National Bone Health Alliance (NBHA), a private-public partnership working to improve the overall health and quality of life of all Americans by enhancing their bone health, has named David B. Lee, MPA, the new Director of the Alliance effective March 21, Mr. Lee joins the NBHA with nearly 20 years of demonstrated experience in executive management and program administration, business development and fundraising, health policy, communications and grants management. The NBHA was established in 2010 in response to the U.S. Surgeon General s Report on Bone Health and Osteoporosis (released October 2004) and recommendations from the 2008 Summit for a National Action Plan. The NBHA s goals are to increase public and professional awareness of healthy lifestyle choices, expand public policies to advance better bone health and foster research necessary to develop and disseminate the scientific and medical knowledge necessary to serve as a basis for strong bones across America. Founding members include American Society for Bone & Mineral Research, Health Monitor Network, National Osteoporosis Foundation, Bone and Cancer Foundation, The Paget Foundation and the Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation. 4 N O F events It s a busy week for NOF and there s something for everyone! Will you be there? F rom May 18 to May 21 in Las Vegas, NOF convenes the 9th International Symposium on Osteoporosis (ISO), where healthcare professionals are gathering to discuss the latest scientific advances in osteoporosis prevention, diagnosis and treatment. This core educational activity brings together your physicians, nurses and others to learn from the top osteoporosis researchers and clinical experts in order to improve the care they provide to you and other patients with or at risk for osteoporosis. Hot topics include Communicating Risk to Patients, Secondary Osteoporosis, Monitoring Therapeutic Response, Fracture as a Sentinel Event, Emerging Issues and more. On Thursday evening, May 19, we are celebrating healthy bones at our annual Silhouette Awards Dinner. By raising awareness at this event, we share the hope that, one day, every silhouette will stand tall and osteoporosis and low bone mass will no longer compromise the lives of 44 million Americans. The dinner raises funds to support our programs of public and clinician awareness, education, advocacy and research. We are proud to announce our distinguished honorees: Mercedes Ellington, dancer, choreographer and granddaughter of Duke Ellington; patient advocate, Sally Fullman, Ph.D.; C. Conrad Johnston, Jr., M.D. of the Indiana University School of Medicine; and Director of the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), Stephen I. Katz, M.D., Ph.D. Our busy week concludes on Saturday, May 21, with the Healthy Bones, Build Them For Life Patient and Consumer Forum. The very informative program focuses on nutrition, exercise and treatment with plenty of opportunity to ask questions of the experts. Following this event, available resources will be on Will you be there? To support NOF s initiatives during National Osteoporosis Awareness and prevention Month, visit or call (800)
ask the E x p E r t This issue s expert is Karen Kemmis, PT, DPT, MS, CDE Karen Kemmis, PT, DPT, MS, CDE I am a 55 year old woman with osteoporosis. I have read that jogging is one of the best exercises for building strong bones. Is running considered safe for me? F or most people with osteoporosis, jogging would be considered unsafe. While jogging is a high-impact weight-bearing exercise that can help keep bones strong, it may also increase the risk of breaking a bone. Individuals with low bone density (osteopenia) can also benefit from following the precautions for people with osteoporosis. This is because these people may be at an increased risk of breaking a bone. Power walking and walking briskly are much safer and almost as effective for achieving the many health benefits of exercise. Your healthcare provider, who knows your individual medical history and bone mineral density, should be able to provide guidance as to whether jogging is safe for you. A physical therapist can also be an excellent resource for information about exercise and bone health. If you re interested in working with a physical therapist, your healthcare provider should be able to provide a referral for physical therapy.
strategies for O S t E O p O r O S i S NOF Honors Individuals Working to Advance Osteoporosis and Bone Health Awareness, Education and Research A t this year s Silhouette Awards Dinner, NOF will recognize several individuals who are making a difference for everyone living with or at risk for osteoporosis. Stephen I. Katz, M.D., Ph.D., director of the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), will receive the Paul G. Rogers Leadership Award and Sally Fullman, Ph.D. will receive the Steps for Strong Bones Award. NOF advocates for increased funding for expanded federal research, which paves the way for discoveries to reduce the pain, loss of independence and diminished quality of life that often follow a broken bone. At National Institute of Health (NIH), NIAMS, the lead institute for osteoporosis and bone research, is responsible for advances in bone health and osteoporosis that at one time were unthinkable. As NIAMS celebrates its 25th Anniversary, NOF is proud to honor its leader, Dr. Katz, as a dedicated advocate for advances in scientific knowledge about bone health that are benefiting Americans of all ages. Research has the potential to improve patients lives, but education and prevention activities also contribute to an enhanced quality of life for patients and those at risk for osteoporosis. During the last decade, state funding for osteoporosis education and prevention programs has declined although the need for these programs only has increased. NOF is proud to honor Dr. Fullman with an award that recognizes her passion for patient education in her community and with key decision makers at all levels of government. As a leader of Project Healthy Bones, a program of the New Jersey Department of Health, and through her involvement in NOF s Healthy Bones Advocacy Network, Dr. Fullman provides a face for the many individuals battling osteoporosis as well as for those at risk for the disease.
featured S u p p O r t E r S t O r y Two Decades of Support In a recent interview, former Board member Wayne Bradley shared why he and his wife support NOF M y wife, Marilyn, and I have supported NOF for twenty years and are happy we have done so! Throughout our married life, we have volunteered with church work, helped other charities and supported political campaigns. They have been important to us, but we are particularly proud to be associated with NOF. The Foundation has worked tirelessly to make osteoporosis an integral part of our national health agenda. In 2004, the Surgeon General s Report on bone health and osteoporosis brought to light the magnitude of the disease and its impact on America. It was a significant upswing for our cause. NOF had been working diligently to gain higher recognition about osteoporosis in health circles and with the American people, and with the Surgeon General s Report we ve achieved something special. We continue to talk about the importance of good bone health with young people, including our daughter and granddaughter, and we encourage others to do the same including alerting men about osteoporosis as well because it is not just a disease that impacts women. Now that we are retired, we decided to take advantage of NOF s Charitable Gift Annuity program and it suits us well. It allowed us to make a substantial gift that provided us an immediate charitable tax deduction and pays us income for life. Each year we receive income from our investment in NOF and a portion of our annuity payment is tax-deductible for many years to come. It is encouraging to see osteoporosis centers across the country, as well as many physicians and clinics including osteoporosis awareness in their training. This progress in public awareness and training is a great tribute to the Foundation! We are so pleased to support NOF s efforts, knowing we are making a difference in an important health issue.
A Gift from Mothers to Daughters We know that sharing the knowledge of how to build strong bones when you re young, maintain them during midlife and protect them when you re older is an ongoing dialogue among women. Each year NOF celebrates families mothers and daughters in particular building healthy bones for life at our A Gift from Mothers to Daughters luncheons. Events include informative panel discussions, a silent auction and presentation of our Generation Awards to women s health advocates. The fun and meaningful fundraisers support NOF s programs and services for those living with or at risk of osteoporosis.
