1 Page 1 of ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE FACTS AND FIGURES By Diana Iuliano-Chan, Region IV NARFE-Alzheimer's Regional Coordinator. The number of Americans living with Alzheimer's disease is growing and growing fast. An estimated 5.5 million Americans of all ages have Alzheimer's disease. By 2050 that number could increase to 16 million! Of the estimated 5.5 million Americans living with Alzheimer's dementia in 2017, an estimated 5.3 million are age 65 and older and approximately 200,000 individuals are under age 65 and have younger-onset Alzheimer's. One in 10 people age 65 and older (10 percent) has Alzheimer's dementia. Almost two-thirds of Americans with Alzheimer's are women. African-Americans are about twice as likely to have Alzheimer's or other dementias as older whites. Hispanics are about one and one-half times as likely to have Alzheimer's or other dementias as older whites. Because of the increasing number of people age 65 and older in the United States, particularly the oldest-old, the number of new cases of Alzheimer's and other dementias is projected to soar. Today, someone in the United States develops Alzheimer's dementia every 66 seconds. By mid-century, someone in the United States will develop the disease every 33 seconds. Alzheimer's disease is the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States. It is the fifthleading cause of death among those age 65 and older and a leading cause of disability and poor health. As the population of the United States ages, Alzheimer's is becoming a more common cause of death. It is the only top 10 cause of death that cannot be prevented, cured or even slowed. Although deaths from other major causes have decreased significantly, official records indicate that deaths from Alzheimer's disease have increased significantly. Between 2000 and 2014, deaths from Alzheimer's disease as recorded on death certificates increased 89 percent, while deaths from the number one cause of death (heart disease) decreased 14 percent. Among people age 70, 61 percent of those with Alzheimer's are expected to die before the age of 80 compared with 30 percent of people without Alzheimer's a rate twice as high.
2 Page 2 of 5 In Wisconsin the Between 2015 and 2040, the Wisconsin s population age 65 and older will grow by 640,000 people, an increase of 72%. This expected growth rate is also reflected in the projected increases in dementia. The population is rapidly aging in rural areas, and is most pronounced in the northern half of the state. The increase is projected to occur at an above average rate in this portion of the state. These northern counties have moderate to high rates of poverty, based on U.S. Department of Agriculture data, as well as a higher level of health concerns per County Health Rankings. Of Wisconsin s 72 counties, 18 are projected to have at least 33% of their total population age 65 and older by 2040, with three estimated to reach 40%. Of the 27,690 people in hospice care in 2016, 5,261 had been diagnosed with dementia; this represents 19% of the total hospice patients in Wisconsin. Medicaid cost for people with dementia in 2017 is projected to be $687 million and that cost is expected to increase by 30.6% by In ,066 people died in Wisconsin from Alzheimer s disease; the 6 th leading cause of death. In ,000 caretakers provided 219,000,000 hours of unpaid care valued at $2,775,000,000! The breaks down to $14.00 per hour! The caretakers incurred $140,000,000 in health care costs for themselves, due to the caretakers not taking care of their own health while caring for a loved one with dementia. When the 114th Congress convened in January 2015, Alzheimer s Association advocated for increased Alzheimer s research funding at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) with the historic funding increase of $350 million for FY16, the largest in history, signed into law in December And again, in the summer of 2016 when the House Appropriations Committee approved an additional $350 million increase for FY17 and the Senate Appropriations Committee approved $400 million.
3 Page 3 of 5 The 114th Congress also saw the advancement of critical legislation to increase access to care planning and support services. The Alzheimer s Association, AIM, and its advocates led the way on the HOPE for Alzheimer s Act to provide Medicare coverage for comprehensive care-planning services for those living with Alzheimer s disease and other cognitive impairments. Because of its efforts, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) finalized a decision to pay for cognitive and functional assessments and care planning. In 2017, for the first time, people living with Alzheimer's will have access to care planning with a medical professional covered by Medicare. Alzheimer s Association also saw support grow for the Palliative [pal-le-a-tive] Care and Hospice Education and Training Act (PCHETA). PCHETA would ensure an adequate, well-trained palliative care workforce through workforce training, education and awareness and enhanced research, and will continue to work to ensure that palliative and hospice care is a priority on Capitol Hill in the 115 th Congress. Additionally, there was increased support in Congress for Kevin and Avonte s Law, which reauthorizes the Missing Alzheimer s Disease Patient Alert Program, helping law enforcement quickly identify and reunite persons with Alzheimer s with their families and caregivers. While, the 114th Congress departed before taking final action on the legislation, the support is hopeful for its passage in the new Congress. The State of Wisconsin s A Plan for a Dementia-Capable Wisconsin dated February 2014, states: ( The most common residential setting for people with dementia is a private home, followed by assisted living facilities and then nursing homes. Wisconsin s Care and Case Management Plan will: Expand the Dementia Care Specialist Program in Aging and Disability Resource Centers (ADRC) to promote community awareness and access to services. Strengthen Department of Health Services and ADRC information and referral resources to facilitate access to dementia care resources in the community, including by (1) updating information in resource databases; (2) redesigning the Department s dementia web page to make it more user-friendly; and (3) engaging in outreach regarding assistance an ADRC can provide to those with Alzheimer s and other dementias. Create a registry of trained professional caregivers and other professionals Wisconsin s Public Awareness Plan will: Encourage public and private employers to provide information to employees on dementia and on resources available to help individuals with dementia and their family caregivers. Engage public health departments in efforts on awareness campaigns, educating the public about lifestyle and disease management techniques, identifying underserved populations, and advocating for needed supports in the community.
4 Page 4 of 5 Promote the use of the Department of Public Instruction s dementia curriculum for use in health classes in middle and high schools. In collaboration with the Alzheimer s Association, NARFE members have donated more than $12 million to the NARFE Alzheimer s Fund. 100 percent of NARFE donations to the Fund are allocated to research. NARFE is a member of the Alzheimer s Association s Zenith Society, a group of about 50 donors representing the highest level of giving. NARFE is one of only four organizations belonging to the Zenith Society; and, of the four organizations, NARFE is the number one contributor. Many NARFE members not only contribute their dollars to the NARFE Alzheimer s Fund but also plan and participate in fundraisers, and volunteer at local daycare centers and other respite-care facilities. At the 2016 National Convention, delegates voted to extend our current goal to $13 million in In calendar year 2016, Region IV raised $32,025 of which Wisconsin raised $6,025 or 19%; a 1% increase over In August 2015 NARFE awarded $479,208 for Alzheimer s Research; in August 2016 at the National Convention, $470,633 was awarded; and as of March 31, 2017, NARFE has raised $342, We have until July 31 to raise additional funds and award the funds for Alzheimer s Research at the NARFE-Alzheimer s Conference to be held in Chicago August 29-30, This is a far cry from NARFE s first award of $75,000 in 1988! To date NARFE has funded completely or partially 71 research projects in its fight to end Alzheimer s! But what can we do? What can you do to help in finding a cure to end Alzheimer s if not in our life time but in our children s or grandchildren s life time? We can get involved! Since 1985, NARFE members have played a major role in seeking a cure for Alzheimer s disease. Through its partnership with the Alzheimer s Association, NARFE supports research into the cause, prevention and treatment of Alzheimer s disease as well as a cure for Alzheimer s and related disorders. Public education on the need for research our only tool for conquering the disease also is an important focus. Last year NARFE started a National NARFE team across the country in the Walk to End Alzheimer s. NARFE teams raised over $45,000 in The Walk is held annually in more than 600 communities nationwide, the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer s is the world s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer s care, support and research. This inspiring event calls on participants of all ages and abilities to join the fight against the disease!
