1 Summer Institute on Mental Disorders and the Older Adult: Connecting the Dots via Expertise and Case Studies July 31-Aug 1, 2014 Pyle Center, Madison, Wis At this important institute you will: hear directly from UW s top clinicians and research scientists explore complex mental health case studies in small groups understand the dynamics of chronic illness and late-life mental illness discover how to meet the many challenges of late-life mental disorders

2 Connecting the Dots via Expertise and Case Studies If you are on the frontlines of geriatric mental health care, you want to attend this 2-day professional continuing education conference. Because the challenges of providing geriatric mental health care are many, you can best meet these challenges when you re well informed. Connecting the dots in effective care requires an understanding of the dynamics of chronic illness and late-life mental illness. This year s institute features guest lectures from UW s top clinicians and research scientists on evidence-based screening and treatment approaches for geriatric mental disorders. New this year is the inclusion of afternoon case study work facilitated by Tim Howell, geriatric psychiatrist. This program is planned so you can apply what you learn in the morning sessions each day and begin connecting the dots via case studies in the afternoon sessions. This provides you with a more intimate opportunity to apply information while working and networking in small case study groups. Our conference faculty of engineering, nursing, geriatric psychiatry, geriatric medicine, pharmacy, social work and continuing education are leading experts at University of Wisconsin Madison who will engage you in a collaborative exploration of how to better understand, treat and care for older adults with mental health challenges. Absolutely fulfilling. Excellent sources of academia. Thank you for gathering the geriatric think tank!

3 Keynote speaker Patricia Flatley Brennan is UW-Madison professor of nursing and industrial engineering, and theme leader of the Living Environments Laboratory on Madison campus. She developed a series of webbased interventions designed to reduce isolation and improve self-care among home care patients. She is also national program director of Project Health Design, a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation funded initiative designed to stimulate the next generation of personal health records. Brennan is fellow of the American Academy of Nursing (1991) and the American College of Medical Informatics (1993) and in 2002 was elected to the Institute of Medicine.
