2 COMMITTEE S INVITATION Dear Colleagues The NSW RANZCO Branch Committee warmly invites ophthalmologists and trainees from Australia, New Zealand and beyond to attend the 2018 Congress on March. We will be returning to the Crowne Convention facility at Pokolbin, in the Hunter Valley, north of Sydney. The facility can offer accommodation on site for a large number of delegates in a congenial atmosphere. The theme, Ophthalmology - Its Ups and Downs, will focus on the management and prevention of the complications that are part and parcel of the practice of ophthalmology. A broad spectrum of ophthalmology disciplines will be addressed, and the program should appeal to generalists and subspecialists alike. We are privileged to be to be joined by our distinguished overseas keynote speakers: Ken Nischal is the Professor of Ophthalmology, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and is a world authority on paediatric anterior segment surgery and research Rupesh Agrawal is a Consultant Ophthalmologist at the National Healthcare Group Eye Institute, Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Singapore. His areas of interest are ocular inflammatory disorders, ocular trauma, ocular nanotechnology, and choroid imaging. The distinguished Australian vitreo-retinal surgeon Wilson Heriot will be joining Ken and Rupesh on the Keynote Speaker Podium. So come and join us at Pokolbin in March. 3 Rupesh Agrawal FRCS, FAMS, MMed After completing his residency and fellowship in uveitis and ocular trauma from Sankara Netralaya, Chennai ( ), Dr Agrawal was a faculty member at Shri Ganapati Netralaya, Jalna ( ) and L V Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad, India ( ). After being awarded the NMRC overseas research training fellowship, he spent time at Moorfields Eye Hospital (MEH), London with Prof Carlos Pavesio and completed his MD (Res) training fellowship at the Institute of Ophthalmology, University College London (UCL) (Nov 12 Oct 14) and is now associated with the Institute of Ophthalmology as Research Associate and as Honorary consultant with MEH. His clinical areas of expertise are ocular inflammatory disorders (uveitis) including ocular tuberculosis and HIV and ocular trauma. He has published many articles in peer-reviewed journals and presented several papers and lectures on uveitis and ocular trauma. He is a recipient of numerous grants for basic-translational science projects pertinent to ocular inflammation and drug delivery. He is associated with Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI) as Clinician Investigator the School of Material Science and Engineering (MSE), Nanyang Technological University (NTU) as Adjunct Assistant Professor, the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (IMCB), A*Star, the Singapore and National University of Singapore (NUS). His key research areas of interest are: Development of sustained release drugs for back of the eye. Novel biological markers for ocular inflammation. Characterising red blood cell behaviour and its implications in diabetic retinopathy. Choroidal vascular imaging using index first published by him: Choroidal vascularity index He is currently secretary of International Society of Ocular trauma. He was conferred with Healthcare Humanity Award by President of Singapore (2011) for his humanitarian work. He is involved heavily in charity projects across Asia. He also serves as an examiner for Royal College of Surgeons and Physicians, Glasgow, UK. Wilson Heriot FRANZCO Associate Professor Wilson Heriot undertook his Ophthalmology training at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in East Melbourne. He subsequently spent two years in New York with the late Professor Paul Henkind, whilst exploring choroidal neovascularization and light induced retinal damage. He then spent two years with Professor Robert Machemer, the pioneer of intraocular microsurgery. In 2005, he developed a simple outpatient procedure, called pneumatic displacement for treating macula haemorrhages, which currently remains widely used around the world. In addition, in 2016, A/Prof Heriot was awarded a three-year congressional grant with the United States Department of Defence of US $1.5 million, to further the development of his innovative retinal detachment repair technique. At the prestigious Gonin Society meeting in 2016, A/Prof Heriot received the award for best submitted presentation. At the 2017 MACULART meeting in Paris, he was awarded the prize for best presentation poster. In Durham, North Carolina, at the Duke Medical Centre Advanced Vitreous Surgery 20th anniversary meeting, he was an invited faculty member, presenting his work on retinal detachment repair of the future. He was also a panel member at the anniversary meeting, discussing optimal management of macula haemorrhages. His investigations of vitreous traction disorders have shed new light on how macular holes open and close. His current research program includes investigating the defining characteristics of different patterns of diabetic retinopathy to optimise management for individual patients, identifying clinical indicators for vitreous haemorrhage in diabetic retinopathy and optimal management of central retinal vein occlusion including management with laser induced chorioretinal anastomosis. Ken K. Nischal, MD, FRCOphth Chief, Division of Pediatric Ophthalmology, Strabismus, and Adult Motility Director, Pediatric Program Development, UPMC Eye Center Professor of Ophthalmology, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine Dr Nischal is Chief of the Division of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus at Children s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, Director of Pediatric Program Development at the UPMC Eye Center, and Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Ken attended King s College Hospital Medical School of the University of London and completed ophthalmology residencies at both Birmingham and Midlands and the Oxford Eye Hospital in the United Kingdom. Ken completed his fellowship at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. Prior to joining Children s in 2011, Ken was at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. Ken is one of the pioneers of pediatric corneal transplants. Children from all over the world come to Children s because of Ken s expertise in helping children with penetic corneal diseases. His focus is on evidence based protocol led clinical care with clinical outcome measures as a source of clinical research. His main areas of clinical research are Anterior Segment Developmental Anomalies Affecting the Cornea, Lens and Trabecular Meshwork. 6 Meeting Details Destination Hunter Valley Approximately two hours north of Sydney - drive through the area s picturesque vineyards. Venue Crowne Plaza, Lovedale, Hunter Valley, NSW The hotel offers deluxe hotel and villa style accommodation. The villas are ideal for families, featuring two bedrooms and bathrooms and a huge living area with a kitchen. Guests can take advantage of the hotel s leisure facilities including a heated pool, 18 hole golf course, tennis courts and Ubika Spa. Accommodation The Crowne Plaza resort has offered rates to this conference for delegates and will extend this rate for extra days either side of the conference subject to availability. Room rate (per room per night i.e. includes two people) Hotel Room (single/double/twin) is $ includes one full buffet breakfast. Two Bedroom Villa is $ includes two full buffet breakfasts. Rooms must be booked using the registration form or online only. The hotel will not take direct bookings for this conference. Full payment is required at time of booking. Important: Early booking is essential to avoid disappointment as the number of rooms available to the conference is limited. Reserved rooms will only be held until 6.00pm on the day of arrival unless prior notice is given by indicating on the registration form, or by contacting the hotel direct. Accommodation cancellations: the hotel s policy is that - any cancellations after 15 February 2018 will pay the full fee of their entire accommodation booking. Catering Breaks The catering breaks are for delegates only should you wish to join us at the catering breaks we can arrange a special catering pass for you. Catering passes are $80 per day please register your partner / guest on the delegate registration form attached. Cancellations, Refunds & Disclaimer Cancellation of registration received in writing before 16 February will attract an administration charge of $225. After that date there will be no refunds. Registrations can, however, be transferred within an organisation if the secretariat is advised in writing. The information contained in this brochure is correct at the time of going to print. The committee and /or organisers reserve the right to change without notice any part of the program and the speakers. Conference Dinner Friday Night 7.00pm Delegates are invited to attend the conference dinner. However, you must indicate on the Registration Form that you wish to attend. Only then will a ticket be issued. 7 Dietary Requirements We will endeavour to accommodate special dietary needs. Please indicate on the Registration Form if you require special meals i.e. vegan, vegetarian. Also advise if you have an allergy to any foods or preparations. Please Note: This is for special needs only not preferences. Some special foods may incur a surcharge if they have to be ordered specially. Dress The dress for the conference and conference dinner is smart casual (no ties). Dress for the conference dinner is lounge suit or jackets for gentlemen. GST Goods and Services Tax is included in all prices (except accommodation). The registration form once completed is considered a tax invoice and complies with all government requirements. Insurance Registration fees do not include insurance of any kind. Registrants and exhibitors are strongly advised that at the time you register for the conference and book your travel (if applicable) you arrange health and travel insurance of your choice. The policy should include loss of fees/deposits through cancellation of your participation in the conference, or through cancellation of the conference, loss of international/domestic air fares through cancellation for any reason, including airline or related services strikes within Australia, failure to utilise tours/transfers or pre-booked arrangements due to airline delay, Force Majeure or any other reason, medical expenses (including sickness and accident cover), loss or damage to personal property, additional expenses and repatriation should travel arrangements have to be altered. The committee and conference managers cannot take any responsibility for any participant failing to arrange their own insurance and will not accept any liability for loss or injury.
