4 Amatrice (Rieti) after 24th August earthquake an earthquake is an emergency.. a series of earthquakes is a catastrophe aftershocks from 24 August 2016 to today 300 total victims killed by earthquake or by indirect causes people assisted by Civil Protection and Associations 600 sq km extension of the area deformed 131 towns in the Ministerial List of Urgent Intervention among 4 Region (Marche, Umbria, Abruzzo, Lazio)

5 Macerata was the more damaged province in Marche Region Visso (Macerata) after 26th October earthquake 11 municipalities affected Camerino, Serravalle, Muccia, Pieve Torina, Valfornace, Fiastra, Fiordimonte, Monte Cavallo, Bolognola, Visso, Ussita, Castelsantangelo sul Nera 4 hospitals evacuated Tolentino, Matelica, Cingoli, Amandola Hospitals people homeless forced to leave their homes

6 Basilica San Benedetto in Norcia after 30th October earthquake elderly people are more fragile in emergency over 65 years old only in Macerata area 400 people with dementia supposed to be, at least 4/5 care facilities condemned declared unsuitable for habitation

7 for a person with dementia emergency means PSYCHOLOGICAL TROUBLES CAUSED BY FEAR, STRESS, LOSS OF REFERENCES (HOME, RELATIVES, ROUTINE) PHYSICAL PROBLEMS CAUSED BY UNSUITABLE ACCOMMODATIONS (COMMON DORMITORY AND BATHROOMS, COLD) PRACTICAL DIFFICULTIES CAUSED BY MULTIPLE CHANGINGS IN CAREGIVERS AND ACCOMODATIONS breaking a precarious balance FLARE UP OF CHRONIC DISEASE LOSS OF INDEPENDENCE INCREASED HOSPITAL ADMISSIONS and INCREASED MORTALITY wanting to go home is the most common reaction

8 what we have done six actions to support people with dementia and their families to support the management of emergency process to improve people with dementia wellbeing

9 what we have done 24 hours dedicated emergency phone code people scared from earthquakes people left alone by foreign carer people remained in collapsed house beacuse bedridden... people in tends with practical difficulties MANAGING BPSD 25% ACCOMODATION 15% HEALTH NEEDS 10% CAREGIVING 50%

10 what we have done evaluation of people conditions in tends no place or activities for aged people not proper hygienic conditions lack of information lack of appropriate psychological and physical support

11 what we have done people with dementia for people with dementia the Daily Center for people with alzheimer disease in Camerino re-opened despite aftershocks to give back people with dementia a part of their normal life people with dementia worked hard to give their contribution to the rebuilt with local products, events, occupational activities

12 what we have done inventory and evaluation of people with dementia in hotels FRIALTY DEGREE EVALUATION RECORD 5 psychologists of Alzheimer Uniti evaluated Frialty Degree 373/400 people over 65 years old evauated in their temporary accommodation (40 hotel on the Adriatic Coast) 5 people with severe dementia 22 people with moderate dementia 25 people with mild dementia 75 people with chronical diseases 223 people in health but with a high risk for depression

13 what we have done Hotel pilot Project: to move back people with dementia MACERATA HINTERLAND a pilot project to move back home elderly people affected by mild or moderate dementia the accommodation is arranged in Macerata hinterland, in hotels not involved and impacted by season tourism with support to overcome fear and with opportunities for involvement

14 what we are working for a model for assisting frail elderly people in emergency plan of actions to support management and coordination of care for elderly people in emergency a flexible and implementable model to be applied and integrated in future emergency conditions for frail elderly people developed by Alzeimer Uniti Italia, Italian Association of Psycogeriatrics (AIP), Italian Association of Geriatrics and Gerontology (SIGG), Fire Fightes (VVF)
