1 The Region s Leader Spine Center Spine Center at Miami Valley Hospital The Spine Center at Miami Valley Hospital (MVH) is the only Spine Center of Excellence in the Dayton region that offers comprehensive services from pre-assessment through rehabilitation all in one location. We deliver patient-centered care using specialized experience and advanced technology. Our Approach to Care Not all conditions affecting the spine require surgery. At MVH, we first evaluate each patient on an individual basis and attempt non-surgical options such as physical therapy and pain medications. We then evaluate the patient s response to non-surgical treatment to determine if surgery is necessary. If it is determined that spine surgery is needed, we provide the optimal recovery atmosphere for our patients and their loved ones. MVH has 70 private, highly-equipped and spacious rooms, and a care team that is dedicated to providing our patients with a comfortable stay and positive outcomes. Why Come to MVH The patient rooms are completely private and have been constructed to accommodate every level of patient care and to enhance recovery by minimizing patient movement. Every patient room features a sleeper sofa so a loved one can be nearby both day and night if needed, a private bathroom and shower, and floor to ceiling windows that allow an abundance of natural light. Wireless Internet and room service meals are also available for patients and their guests. Caregiver stations are located close to the patient, resulting in increased visualization and contact with the patient by the medical team. The Orthopedic Joint and Spine Center occupies two floors and provides a crucial central location for the hospital s patient care units. The center s spacious rooms offer the optimal environment for patients healing from surgeries that require immediate therapy and the need to accommodate large equipment. Other features include a physical therapy satellite located on the total joint unit, an educational facility for pre-surgery teaching, and a cast room. The Orthopedic Joint and Spine Center s private rooms enable care that is tailored to each patient s needs. The overall design helps deliver on a care model that promotes healing by minimizing disruptive patient transitions.

3 Spinal Conditions Treated at MVH Lumbar spine arthritis - Inflammation of the joints in the lower back that causes pain and or stiffness. Lumbar arthritis is a degenerative condition (continues to get worse over time), with varying degrees of symptoms. Osteoporosis - A disease that weakens bones and is a common factor leading to compression fractures of the spine in aging. It is more common in women than men. Ruptured/herniated disc - A ruptured or herniated disc can put pressure on the spinal nerves or spinal cord resulting in neck or back pain. It can also result in pain, weakness and/or change in sensation in the arms and legs. Spinal stenosis - A narrowing of the spinal column that causes pressure on the spinal cord, or narrowing of the openings where spinal nerves leave the spinal column (neural foramina). This can cause pain, weakness and/or numbness in the back, neck or affected extremities. Spine fractures/spine trauma - Fractures of the spine can cause damage to the spinal cord or spinal nerves. The degree of damage determines the severity of symptoms experienced and the form of treatment used. Spinal fractures are often a result of trauma, such as a car accident, but can also occur due to weakened bones. Spondylolisthesis - A condition where vertebral bodies become unstable and move or slip causing back pain and/or pain in the lower extremities. It is commonly a degenerative process (continues to get worse over time). Spondylosis - A broad term describing the deterioration of the spine due to normal wear-and-tear that can occur with age. This deterioration can put pressure on neural elements (nerve structure including the spinal cord and spinal nerves) and cause pain and/or weakness. Spinal Treatments at MVH Discectomy - This involves removing a portion of an intervertebral disc to relieve pressure on the affected neural structures including spinal nerves and/or the spinal cord. Fusion - A surgical procedure that fuses together instable vertebrae so that they heal into a single, solid bone. Fusion usually involves some combination of bone graft and instrumentation. It is sometimes needed along with spinal decompression procedures. Kyphoplasty - A procedure used to stabilize the bone and alleviate pain from a spinal fracture. Laminectomy - Bone is removed to make more room for the spinal nerves as they exit the spinal cord. Spinal decompression surgery - A general term referring to surgical procedures which relieve pressure on the spinal cord or spinal nerves. Spinal disc replacement - A relatively new surgery performed to treat specific types of back pain while avoiding the problems associated with spine fusion surgery. Spinal tumor surgery - A procedure used to remove tumors and stabilize the spinal column. Treatment of spinal fractures - Involves stabilizing the spinal column to prevent further neurologic deterioration, allowing rapid mobilization for early physical therapy, occupational therapy and rehabilitation.

4 Success story: Ernestine Davidson Doesn t Know the Meaning of Rest Since growing up on a Mississippi farm, she s moved through life with a builtin sense of perseverance. The 68-year-old, who is accustomed to hard work, has become a self-starter and successful businesswoman. Her first venture was a business that provided in-home care for the elderly. It was through that work that she met her current employer, a Dayton-area professional who needed someone to run the day-to-day operations at his large estate. He found what he was looking for in Ernestine, and today, 20 years later, she s still going strong. It s a lot of work and responsibility that Davidson handles with professionalism and determination. But, along with her backbone (a good thing), Ernestine has backbone problems (not so good). When Ernestine began experiencing excruciating back pain last November, she felt as if her world had stopped. Still, the pain which made it impossible to walk or sit for periods of time was a familiar one. She had suffered it nine years earlier when aging and arthritis had gotten the better of two vertebrae. That time, she underwent spinal surgery at Miami Valley Hospital and was amazed at how quickly she got back to normal. That s why Ernestine didn t hesitate when the pain returned. She knew surgery was her only hope, so she called the surgeon she knew could help Marcos Amongero, MD, at the Orthopedic institute of Dayton. Ernestine has degenerative spinal disease, which results in the loss of normal structure and function in the spine due to pressure on the spinal cord and nerve roots. Two separate issues created the pressure. It s one of the most painful things you can go through, Ernestine says. But the amazing thing is how soon you heal after surgery. In January, she underwent a three-hour surgery where Dr. Amongero decompressed the nerves and stabilized her spine. Five days later, she returned home on the road to recovery.
