3 Prevalence of Falls On average one out of three people age 65+ fall each year 1 Half of them will fall more than once 2 Among those 80 plus years, half of them fall each year 3 Post-hospitalization is a high risk time 14% of Medicare patients fall in the first month after discharge 5 20% of those sick enough to go home on homecare fall within 30 days 6 Most of these falls happen in the first two weeks after discharge FOOTNOTES 1. Hornbrook, Gerontologist, 1994; Hausdorff, Arch Phys Med & Rehab, Tinetti, New Eng J Med, 1988; Teno, JAGS, As reported in Tinetti, M E, MD et al, Fall-risk evaluation and management: Challenges in adopting geriatric care practices, The Gerontologist, Vol. 46, No. 6, 2006, p Sterling, J Trauma-Inj Infection & Critical Care, Mahoney, Jane M.D.; Mark Sager; Nancy Cross Dunham; Jill Johnson. 4 Quality of Life Impact of Falls 10%-20% of falls cause serious injuries 4 Each year in US: 1 300,000 hip fractures & 90% are from falling. This equals nearly 1,000 hip fractures a day ~25 percent of hip fracture patients make a full recovery: 2 50 percent will become dependent upon a cane or a walker; 40 percent will require nursing home admission 20 percent will die in one year FOOTNOTES 1.
