We are also home to one of Pennsylvania s largest bone marrow and cell transplant programs. Recently, Health Network Health Network has established announced a formal plans for collaboration an affiliationwith the Johns Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Cancer Center Center for for clinical clinical collaborations, medical education and a broad range of cancer research initiatives. Cardiovascular Our doctors have earned worldwide recognition in the medical and surgical care of cardiac, thoracic and vascular disease. Specialties include valve disease, heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, atrial fibrillation, advanced heart surgery, vascular disease, heart and lung transplantation, lung and esophageal surgery, coronary artery disease, and preventative cardiology with lifestyle management and education. We conduct ongoing research in the development and application of new diagnostic and therapeutic technologies that will improve our patients cardiac health. Emergency Medicine We are on the leading edge of a wide array of emergency services. Our hospitals have full-service emergency departments, ready around the clock to handle the most critical situations. In addition, we feature a nationally recognized Burn Center, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, obstetrics and neonatal care, PCI and STEMI services with surgical backup, post-arrest reanimation service, and Comprehensive and Primary Stroke Centers. We also have a Level I Trauma Center ( General ) serving Pittsburgh and the surrounding communities and a Level II Trauma Center (Forbes ) serving the eastern suburbs. LifeFlight was the first air medical service established in the northeastern United States.
5 Neurosciences Our neurosurgeons rank among the world s best for spinal cord, spinal disk, tumor extraction, neurovascular and cranial nerve surgeries. They provide pioneering treatments for conditions that include trigeminal neuralgia, brain tumors, skullbase tumors, lumbar conditions and Parkinson s disease. Our neuroscience researchers are at work on landmark molecular, cellular and DNA studies that, combined with MRI, identify the chemical makeup of brain tumors. They also implant deep brain stimulation devices to improve treatment of epileptic seizures, tremors and movement disorders and have devised new therapies to combat tissue damage from lack of arterial blood inflow to the brain. We also established the region s first dedicated Comprehensive Stroke Unit and are home to the area s largest epilepsy program. Orthopaedic Orthopedic & Rehabilitation We are a national leader in treatments for trauma, the spine, feet and ankles, and the upper extremities. Our surgeons access the latest treatment modalities and research protocols to maximize our patients potential for full mobility. Our programs include advanced diagnostic services, repair and rehabilitation through follow-up, and the development of new devices and procedures that advance the treatment of the musculoskeletal system. In addition to serving as the official medical provider of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Pittsburgh Riverhounds, we provide orthopedic orthopaedic and and sports medicine services to area collegiate and high school athletic programs. We have also been designated as an official U.S. Olympic Regional Medical Center by the U.S. Olympic Committee. Transplant Our nationally renowned surgeons are certified by Medicare and the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) and are on the forefront of the latest surgical procedures. They perform heart, kidney, liver, pancreas and bone marrow transplants, as well as kidney/ pancreas and heart/kidney double transplants. Our transplant patients enjoy survival rates equal to or better than national averages. We use a number of anti-rejection medications in various combinations to decrease the risk of rejection, as well as lower the side effects frequently seen with these drugs. Our programs have won and continuetowin both national and international recognition. Women s Health Our network of primary care physicians, obstetricians, gynecologists and other specialists work together to care for women throughout the various stages of their lives.
