a case to support THE HEART & VASCULAR CENTER
facing TODAY S CHALLENGES Despite remarkable progress in prevention and treatment, cardiovascular diseases including heart attack, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease continue to claim nearly one million lives per year in the United States more than half of all deaths among U.S. men and women. This figure represents twice the number of deaths from cancer, 10 times that from accidents, and 25 times the number from HIV/AIDS. The University of Maryland Heart & Vascular Center (UMHVC) is prepared to meet these challenges. As part of the University of Maryland School of Medicine and the University of Maryland Medical System, the UMHVC is a tertiary and quaternary center caring for the most complicated cardiac conditions. The UMHVC offers all aspects of patient care, collaborating with referring physicians across Maryland, to provide some of the most advanced care in the region. Number One System in Heart Surgery Volume in the State Focused on Sub Specialization of Services to Enhance Quality and Outcomes Top Performing Heart and Lung Transplant Program State of the Art Services for Minimally Invasive Procedures Third Busiest Center for ECMO in the United States Top Performing Center for Mitral Valve Repair Rates Coronary and Robotic Surgery Internationally Recognized Experts in Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Highly Experienced and Dedicated Advanced Heart Failure Team Coordinated Care by Pulmonary Hypertension and Pulmonary Embolectomy Specialists Multidisciplinary Program for Atrial Fibrillation Comprehensive Congenital Heart Program - Fetal Through Adult Advanced Transcatheter Valve Replacement and Repair
make a difference: HELP SAVE A LIFE Through the pillars of superb clinical care, research and innovation, and education of the next generation of clinicians and investigators, the University of Maryland s Heart & Vascular Center provides an environment that is having a major positive impact on those afflicted with heart disease. Philanthropic support furthers our tripartite goals of exceptional clinical care, discovery, and education of the next generation of physicians. Particularly in today s economy, and with the limitations of clinical and practice reimbursement, private support from individuals is vital. Charitable support ensures that we can accomplish our mission and that resources are available to accelerate strategic priorities now and in the future. The University of Maryland Heart & Vascular Center seeks philanthropic support to recruit and retain outstanding cardiologists, surgeons and scientists, to provide training to the next generations of physicians, to advance novel research efforts, and to provide core support for training, programs, and education. MULTIDISCIPLINARY PROGRAMS At the University of Maryland Heart & Vascular Center multidisciplinary comprehensive programs combine specialties from cardiology, cardiac and vascular surgery, pediatric cardiology and other subspecialties, in collaboration with cutting-edge research and innovative technologies. Patients receive care from an integrated team of heart specialists, ensuring the most advanced, comprehensive, and effective care possible. Our current specialized programs include: Advanced Heart Failure Aortic Disease Congenital Heart Coronary Disease Intervention General Cardiac and Vascular Medicine Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Limb Preservation Pediatric Cardiology Pulmonary Embolectomy Structural Heart Valve Disease Transplant and VAD Vascular Acute Care Services Philanthropy is critical to achieving the Heart & Vascular Center s key research, educational, and clinical priorities. We invite you to read on to learn more about how your support will help.
A COMPREHENSIVE HEART & VASCULAR CENTER: HEREwhen you NEED US At the University of Maryland Heart & Vascular Center, we have a national reputation for treating the most complex heart conditions using the most advanced treatment options and therapies. We are committed to offering the highest gold standard quality in a continuum of care model specific to each patient. With our comprehensive programs in cardiology, cardiac and vascular surgery, pediatric cardiology and other subspecialties, in collaboration with cutting-edge research, innovative technologies, and multi-disciplinary programs, we proudly contribute to shaping the standard of cardiovascular patient care for hospitals throughout Maryland, across the country and around the world. David A. Zimrin, MD, FACC Chief, Division of Cardiovascular Medicine James S. Gammie, MD Chief, Cardiac Surgery Co-Directors, University of Maryland Heart & Vascular Center Our physicians are faculty of the University of Maryland School of Medicine, which helps to distinguish us from other hospitals in the state. Cardiologists and surgeons at the UMHVC have advanced medical and surgical skills as well as access to technology available at only a handful of medical centers in the country. We offer personalized care, taking a team approach to our treatments. In the UMHVC, exceptional talent and dedication is the norm. It underlies the high quality of care delivered and the caliber of research performed. OUR MISSION and VISION The University of Maryland Comprehensive Heart & Vascular Center will be recognized as a national center of excellence in cardiovascular care, defined by condition-specific multidisciplinary programs dedicated to high-value patient-centered care. Our tripartite commitment will nurture discovery-based medicine that integrates clinicians and scientists committed to creating new medical knowledge, and inspiring and educating future caregivers, innovators and leaders.
There is no other word for my healing journey than amazing. Lifesaving medical treatments would not have been available to me without the research and quality training for which the University of Maryland faculty and medical teams are known. Urban Adams, Grateful Patient Education: While the UMHVC provides state-of-the-art, compassionate and optimal care for individuals with heart disease, its reach is not limited to just those who receive its direct care. As an academic center, a central part of the faculty s mission is to prepare future generations of specialists, by training clinicians and scientists who will significantly advance the field of heart and vascular medicine, performing cutting-edge research into new methods and treatments, and delivering the highest quality patient care. UMHVC faculty recruit physicians of the highest quality and train medical students, residents and fellows to become well-respected specialists in their fields. Our graduates are sought after for positions around the country supporting our vision and commitment to treatment of heart disease one patient, one doctor, and one family at a time. Research and Discovery of new treatments and prevention strategies for heart attack, stroke, and other major forms of cardiovascular disease is a vital component of our mission to improve human health. Superb clinical care is supported by a deep bench of scientific research which has a direct impact on future patient care here at University of Maryland Medicine. Our research includes the creation of new devices, discovering better treatments, early detection and prevention, as well as partnering with industry. We are leading the way in the most promising areas of research that we believe will transform medicine in the coming years. Obtaining care at the UMHVC allows patients to gain access to these revolutionary technologies and procedures, while providing a collaborative environment for physician-scientists to identify cardiovascular diseases more quickly, precisely and efficiently than ever before ultimately reducing the burden of cardiovascular disease throughout the world. Patient Support Groups offer emotional and compassionate care to our patients, including educating patients about their disease and living a heart-healthy lifestyle. We coordinate group activities with patient champions to assist in all of our patients needs, from diagnosis through treatment and work closely with referring doctors to keep them updated on treatment and progress. We offer patient support for transplantation, congenital heart disease and aortic disease.
philanthropic PRIORITIES Congenital Heart Program $ 5,000,000 Provides sustainable endowment funding to ensure the highest quality, comprehensive care for our patients. Congenital heart disease is one of the most common birth defects found in about eight of every 1,000 newborns. These defects range from minor problems that are easily fixed, to complex and life-threatening conditions requiring lifetime care. From the moment of diagnosis, patients in the UMHVC Congenital Heart Program receive the most sophisticated treatment available, including advances in nonsurgical techniques. Unlike traditional congenital heart programs that treat either children or adults, our program treats patients from birth, through adolescence, and for the entire course of their adult lives. Structural Heart Valve Program $ 4,000,000 Provides sustainable funding for the growth of our multidisciplinary Structural Heart Valve Program and recruitment of top clinicians. This endowment will support the development, testing, and deployment of new technologies and procedures to treat heart valve disease without conventional open heart surgery. Structural and Adult Congenital Hybrid Cath Lab $ 3,000,000 Equipping and maintaining our diagnostic laboratories and operating rooms with state of the art equipment is essential in providing quality care. We are seeking funding for a new multifunctional Heart and Vascular Center Lab, which will be used for cardiac interventional, structural heart, and pediatric and adult congenital heart procedures. In addition, it will have the capacity to transition into an emergency operating room. Named Endowed Distinguished Professorship $ 2,500,000 Distinguished professorships are powerful tools for recruiting and retaining nationally and internationally acclaimed faculty to the UMHVC. These endowments will support the work of a distinguished faculty member. Named Endowed Professorship $ 1,500,000 An endowed professorship is one of the highest honors to be bestowed on a senior member of the faculty. These endowments will support the work of a prominent faculty member. Named Endowed Fellowship $ 1,500,000 Fellowships allow the UMHVC to attract the best and the brightest trainees. These coveted positions foster discovery and innovation leading to novel strategies and technologies for heart and vascular discovery and patient care. Philanthropy offsets the cost of salary and laboratory expenses. Conference Room OR Conference Education and Training Facility $ 250,000 This new conference facility will be the center of multi-disciplinary educational training and research meetings for heart and vascular faculty, staff and medical students. Construction and interior design will incorporate video-conferencing capabilities, high definition projectors and web-based training, to further scientific education, research, and collaboration. Unrestricted Program Support $ 200,000 Support for equipment, specialized technology and upgrades necessary to advance clinical care, patient outreach, research and education programs. OUR REQUEST Your philanthropic investment in the future of the University of Maryland Heart & Vascular Center, combined with the visionary leadership of co-directors James S. Gammie, MD and David A. Zimrin, MD, will continue to drive the pursuit of excellence in innovative research, education and patient-centered care in the Heart & Vascular Center. Philanthropic support to benefit the UMHVC is administered by University of Maryland Baltimore Foundation (UMBF, Inc.). Gifts can be made payable to University of Maryland Baltimore Foundation over a period of years and through a variety of vehicles including stock transfer and bequests. A portion of any contribution may be used to enhance the advancement efforts of the University of Maryland School of Medicine. We appreciate your thoughtful consideration of this request and thank you for making a positive difference in lives of people with heart and vascular disease.
