SYLLABUS The electronic syllabus will be available to pre-registered attendees online prior to the conference for downloading and printing. A flash drive containing the syllabus will be distributed at the conference. TARGET AUDIENCE This activity is designed for primary care providers including community physicians, family practitioners, internal medicine, generalists and other interprofessional team members such as physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses and physical therapists. EDUCATIONAL NEED The need for current information and treatment options for neck and back pain has been identified through previous course participant evaluations and community physician annual needs assessment surveys. This course is designed to change physician competence in the management of patients with diverse spinal disorders and conditions, often not provided in primary medical education. About 80 percent of adults experience low back pain at some point in their lifetimes. It is the most common cause of job-related disability and a leading contributor to missed work days. In a recent survey, more than 25 percent of adults reported experiencing low back pain during the past 3 months. About 20 percent of people affected by acute low back pain develop chronic low back pain with persistent symptoms at one year. In some cases, treatment successfully relieves chronic low back pain, but in other cases pain persists despite medical and surgical treatment. The magnitude of the burden from low back pain has grown worse in recent years. In 1990, a study ranking the most burdensome conditions in the U.S., in terms of mortality or poor health as a result of disease put low back pain in sixth place; in 2010, low back pain jumped to third place. This year s conference will specifically address all of these educational needs including discussion on current and future technologies of spine care. EDUCATIONAL METHODS Lectures with Q&A will be used to facilitate the dissemination of up to date information Case studies and discussion will highlight conditions commonly seen in clinical practice Pre/post tests will be given using an audience response system to help attendees ascertain the level of learning being achieved Panel discussion will be used to provide an opportunity for experts to present differing viewpoints on various topics or issues Physical exam of the cervical and lumbar spine will be demonstrated and small groups will get hands-on practice of these techniques Training on physical therapy techniques for the cervical and lumbar spine will be given. Participants will have hands-on practice to gain competence EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES At the end of the activity, participants should be able to: Perform a focused and efficient cervical and lumbar spinal examination Select diagnostic testing for patients to accurately diagnose the injury Recognize and conservatively manage cervical and low back pain in adults Counsel on behavioral changes to improve quality of life for those patients with chronic neck and back pain

4 Discuss pain control strategies to improve management of neck and back conditions Maximize patient safety through the discussion of pain medication and proper usage Discuss possible surgical options for patients with spinal degenerative disc disease CONFERENCE REGISTRATION Please register early space is limited. Tuition is $380 for physicians and $300 for all others. Confirmation of registration will be sent within two weeks after receipt of registration form. The fees will increase after April 20, Tuition includes two continental breakfasts, refreshment breaks, one luncheon, electronic syllabus, and an online certificate of attendance. Tuition may be paid by check, American Express, Discover, MasterCard or VISA. Cash is not accepted. The Office of Continuing Medical Education reserves the right to cancel this conference. In such a case, a full refund of tuition will be given. Registration forms received without payment will not be processed until payment is received, and payment must follow within 10 days. Early discount rates are honored if payment is received by the date noted on the registration form. After that date, the late fee is applied. Cancellation and Refund Policy: A refund of tuition, less $75 administrative fee, will be allowed if requested in writing by April 20, No refunds will be provided after this date. ACCREDITATION The University of California, Davis, Health System is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. CREDIT DESIGNATION Physician Credit: The University of California, Davis, Health System designates this live activity for a maximum of AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. AAFP (Family Practice) Credit: Application for CME credit has been filed with the American Academy of Family Physicians. Determination of credit is pending. AMA PRA Category 1 Credits acceptable for other healthcare providers Nurse: For the purpose of recertification, the American Nurses Credentialing Center accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credits issued by organizations accredited by the ACCME. For the purpose of re-licensure, the California Board of Registered Nursing accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credits (report a maximum of hours of credit and fill in CME Category 1 for the provider number). Physician Assistant: The National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) states that AMA PRA Category 1 Credits are acceptable for continuing medical education requirements for recertification. Pain Credit Up to 3 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits Pain Management California Business and Professions Code (Section ) requires physicians and surgeons to complete 12 hours of mandatory continuing education on pain management and the appropriate care of the terminally ill. Physicians licensed prior to January 2002 were to have completed this requirement by December 31, Physicians licensed on or after January 1, 2002 must complete this requirement within 4 years of their initial license or by their second renewal date, whichever occurs first.
