4 Trends in the Industry Course objectives: 1. Understand the demographic trends of aging and its impact on the healthcare system. 2. Understand the current and future trends in senior living and the prevalence of chronic disease. 3. List at least five special medication needs of seniors as they become more frail. 4. Describe senior-centric healthcare. Caregivers and clinical staff can benefit from a better understanding of the trends that will affect their communities, their residents, their careers, and their own families as the population in the United States ages. The silver tsunami is approaching, requiring innovative approaches in caring for seniors in the future. The expectations, special needs, and chronic diseases that will manifest in the population as it continues to age will put additional operational demands on the healthcare system in general and senior living options specifically. This presentation will help position participants to anticipate the changes that can be expected over the next two decades. Stephen L. Axelrod, MD Vice President of Strategy and Business Development Dr. Stephen Axelrod has nearly 30 years of clinical and administrative experience in ambulatory care, pharmacy services, and healthcare delivery system design and implementation. He has worked in the long-term care industry for almost 20 years. As founder of SeniorMed, one of the first pharmacies exclusively focused on assisted and independent living communities, Dr. Axelrod believes the pharmacy can play an expanded role in better managing seniors medications. He has represented the Assisted Living Pharmacy Association on the Senate Subcommittee on Aging s Assisted Living Work Group and has been actively involved in representing the needs of assisted living residents. As founder and principal of The Axelrod Group, a healthcare consulting firm, he has also worked with physicians, employers, pharmacies, hospitals, and rehabilitation providers, offering expertise in areas such as quality assurance, corporate medical services, practice management, marketing, and wellness programming. 3
5 Diabetes Emerging Trends in Diabetes Management for Long-Term Care Course objectives: 1. Explain the normal physiology of insulin secretion and action. 2. Discuss the role of oral medications and different insulin regimens to manage type 1 and type 2 diabetes. 3. Describe special considerations in the management of diabetes in older adults. 4. Present emerging trends in promising approaches to diabetes self-management. This presentation will acquaint the participants with current guidelines and treatment options for older adults with diabetes. The different pharmacological agents available and their most common adverse effects will be explained, as well as the types of insulin and available insulin analogs with a focus on a sliding scale of insulin therapy. Participants will be able to identify and assess the risks of hypoglycemia associated with anti-diabetes medications and tight control of glucose levels. The importance of a collaborative approach that combines the expertise of physicians, pharmacists, nurses, caregivers, and family members to effectively manage elderly patients with diabetes will be presented. Jag Khatter, RPh, PharmD, CDE, CGP Vice President of Quality and Clinical Services Dr. Jag Khatter has a decade of experience in pharmaceutical operations in long-term care and assisted living. As a pharmacist who is board certified in diabetes care, chronic pain management, and geriatric pharmacy, Dr. Khatter is a national speaker who shares his expertise about diabetes treatment and management with both clinicians and patients. He has been a certified diabetes educator for the past 15 years and has been involved in the creation of guidelines and diabetes management programs for the long-term care industry. He serves as a commissioner for the Commission for Certification in Geriatric Pharmacy and as co-chair of the Assisted Living Task Force for the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists. Dr. Khatter was also the recipient of the Colorado Pharmacist of the Year award in
6 Enhancing Quality of Life for Residents with Dementia: A Nationwide Quality Care Campaign Course objectives: 1. Outline the importance of high-quality dementia care in enhancing quality of life. 2. Describe the latest quality dementia care research and initiatives. 3. Access care-related resources and strategies through a nationwide, multilevel quality care campaign. In this presentation, participants will learn about an evidence-based multilevel quality care effort. An overview of the overall context for care, including relevant research and available evidence for specific care strategies will be presented. Included is the outline of the development of the Alzheimer s Association s Campaign for Quality Residential Care and the Dementia Care Practice Recommendations released through this effort. The presentation will then detail the various advocacy and training strategies underway to encourage the adoption of practice recommendations to improve care. The presentation will conclude with a description of the campaign s next steps and consideration of the broader implications for enhancing the quality of life for people with dementia living in nursing homes and assisted living settings. Peter S. Reed, PhD, MPH Senior Director of Programs Alzheimer s Association, National Office Dr. Peter S. Reed leads the delivery of care and support to people affected by Alzheimer s disease and other dementias. He oversees the strategic and operational direction of services the Alzheimer s Association provides, while directing the translation of current research into evidence-based programming designed to enhance the lives of people with dementia. Dr. Reed is a frequent public speaker and author on issues related to aging and Alzheimer s disease. He also serves as co-director of the Alzheimer s Association s Quality Care Campaign and leader of its Early Stage Initiative, which focuses on providing services for and raising awareness about people living with early-stage Alzheimer s disease. 5
7 Sexuality in Seniors Course objectives: 1. Describe the physical and emotional effects of aging on sexuality. 2. Discuss the importance of supporting our seniors right to sexual expression. 3. Discuss how to overcome challenges associated with staff and family biases and beliefs about sex and aging. The aging process affects human sexuality in a variety of ways that can be distressing to seniors. There are many diseases, medications, and physiological processes that change how seniors experience sexual relations and intimacy. In addition, our society possesses the beliefs and biases that seniors are too old for sexual expression, thus reinforcing the negative attitudes that some seniors have about themselves. The presentation will provide information and evidence about sexuality in seniors so that participants can clearly understand and support the normalcy of sex and intimacy in this population. Brenda Abbott-Shultz RN, MBA Vice President of Resident and Family Services Benchmark Assisted Living Brenda Abbott-Shultz has more than 20 years of experience in the senior living industry, serving in leadership roles for Sunrise Senior Living Services and now for Benchmark Assisted Living. Over the years, she has worked to educate others on the topic of sexuality and relationships in seniors, encouraging dialogue among seniors, their caregivers, and their families. Ms. Abbott-Shultz provides clinical oversight of Benchmark s assisted living communities, directing the development of resident care guidelines, standards, and practices and overseeing regulatory compliance, risk management, and quality improvement programs. She is a member of the Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut Assisted Living Facilities associations and the American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants. She also serves on the Assisted Living Federation of America s Clinical Quality Roundtable and the Massachusetts Assisted Living Facilities Association Quality Committee. 6
