Board of Directors/Trustees of the Trent DSDC and Dementia UK Purpose of Post The Trent Dementia Services Development Centre is working in partnership with Dementia UK to appoint a dynamic and visionary person to the joint post of Development Director to lead the onward development of both organisations in the East Midlands. The Development Director will act as a champion for dementia services in the region, supporting service development initiatives and working in partnership with stakeholders to raise the profile of dementia and carers issues, improve service standards and encourage research evidence to be transferred to practice. Specifically, the Development Director will: Manage and develop the collective activities of the Trent DSDC and Dementia UK in the East Midlands. Develop a funding strategy, in collaboration with Dementia UK, to sustain the post and build capacity of the two organisations in the region. Form relationships with key stakeholders, commissioners and potential partner organisations to promote and develop the core activities of Dementia UK and the Trent DSDC in the region and nationally. Promote Admiral Nursing across the region and seek funding and support from commissioners and providers to establish new posts and services. Seek and secure dementia care training commissions in support of the national dementia strategy and regional and local strategies and action plans. Promote Dementia UK s carer involvement network, Uniting Carers, across the East Midlands region. Engage in other development work to further the aims of both organisations, supporting services to improve the quality of care and support for people with dementia in the East Midlands and beyond. 1
2 The post is initially offered for 12 months but it is hoped that the post holder will income generate to secure the position in the longer term. Trent DSDC Trent DSDC is a charitable company formed in It was established to serve the East Midlands region (Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire and Nottinghamshire) as part of a network of dementia centres around the UK, supporting services to develop and deliver quality care for people with dementia and their carers. Trent DSDC provides high quality education, training, information and advice services, primarily to people with dementia, their carers, health and social care professionals across the East Midlands, but also nationally. The core activities of the Trent DSDC are: Regional dementia care training for carers, care homes, health and social care providers National and regional dementia care conferences and events a national online information resource providing information on assistive technologies for people with dementia; and the AT Guide: a new online self-help guide to how technology can help people live well with dementia New Dementia Information Service for Carers in Leicestershire (in partnership with the Guideposts Trust). The past five years have seen the organisation grow in terms of the service delivery. Funding from the Department of Health enabled us to develop an online information resource and expertise on assistive technologies for people with dementia. This is a widely used resource, accessed by professionals, carers and people with dementia. This unique service has raised the profile of the Trent DSDC both nationally and more recently internationally. Dementia UK Dementia UK is a national charity seeking to improve the quality of life for all people affected by dementia. Dementia UK intends to build capacity in the East Midlands and deliver the full range of the charity s core activities: Promote and develop Admiral Nursing - a specialist nursing intervention focused on meeting the needs of carers and families of people with dementia Provide high quality training for professionals working with older people, carers and people with dementia Empower carers to have a voice through Uniting Carers, the charity s national network of family carers Promote best practice in dementia care 2
3 Work in partnership with the NHS, social services, other voluntary groups, carers and people with dementia Contribute to national policy on dementia, older people and carers' issues Influence practice and policy development The charity s Head Office is locate din London. Dementia UK has two regional centres, in the South East and West Midlands. This partnership with Trent DESC will enable the charity to extend its provision across the East Midlands region. Main Responsibilities Leading and managing the activities of the Trent DSDC and Dementia UK in the East Midlands To work within the governance framework of the Trent DSDC and Dementia UK to develop the strategic direction and business plan to sustain and grow the organisations activities across the region To act as a champion for older people s mental health and dementia services in the region, taking a proactive approach to liaison with partner organisations and stakeholders, raising awareness of dementia and carers issues and identifying needs and gaps in service provision To represent and promote both organisations at a regional and national level e.g. regional dementia strategy working groups, regional and national Dementia Action Alliance To engage with and develop relationships with one or more academic institutions, exploring the potential of research initiatives in relation to services developed and delivered in the East Midlands. To ensure all legal and charitable obligations are adhered to. Engaging in activities which support dementia awareness and improve care provision whilst generating income to secure future financial stability To develop a funding strategy and identify/lead on funding opportunities, including regional contracts, partnership bids, commercial sponsorship, charitable grants, and other funding/ fundraising opportunities to ensure continuation of services To work with Dementia UK Training to develop a training strategy and grow commissioned dementia care training to support the regional dementia strategy in the East Midlands 3
4 To further develop the Trent DSDC information and advice services on assistive technologies for people with dementia to become a centre of expertise in the UK To oversee the planning of an biennial dementia care conference held in the East Midlands To work closely with partner organisations to develop and deliver new services in the East Midlands, including Admiral Nurses (with Dementia UK) and the regional Dementia Information Service for Carers (with Guideposts Trust) To develop new areas of activity consistent with the aims of the partner organisations General To be an active member of Dementia UK s Development Team, attending monthly meetings in London and providing progress reports and business information, as required To report to quarterly meetings of the Board of the Trent DSDC To commit to equal opportunities and anti-discriminatory practice To ensure monitoring reports, end of year accounts and annual returns to Companies House and the Charity Commission and funding bodies are undertaken as appropriate for the Trent DSDC To undertake other tasks appropriate to the role and level of responsibility. Person Specification Requirement Essential Desirable Education/ Qualifications Educated to degree level and/or equivalent professional qualification in health/social care Relevant postgraduate qualification Experience Managerial experience at a senior level Professional experience providing support/services to people with dementia and/or their carers Track record of successfully Strategic development Partnership working 4
5 obtaining funding for projects and services Service development Project management Knowledge Thorough understanding of the needs of people with dementia and their carers and the range of services that support them Critical understanding of the national drivers affecting service provision for people with dementia Practical understanding of business administration including strategic development, finance, and marketing Dementia care training Assistive technology and its application with people with dementia Skills Excellent communication, motivation and leadership skills Ability to identify and seize opportunities to income generate in pursuit of the organisation s aims and objectives Ability to network effectively with other organisations and individuals The ability to effectively manage and support other staff Ability to work autonomously and to manage own workload Experience of public speaking and presenting at conferences Personal Attributes Flexible and innovative Vision, drive, energy and enthusiasm General Familiarity with basic Microsoft computer applications Full driving licence Willingness to travel extensively throughout the region Willingness to travel to for dementia s London base on Experience of using databases 5
