This conference is designed to provide an update on new advances and areas of interest in cardiology for primary care providers, nurses and other interested health professionals. This year the conference is pleased to have keynote presenters Akshay Desai, MD, MPH from Brigham and Women s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, to speak on Outpatient Strategies for Preventing Hospital Readmission Due to Exacerbations of Congestive Heart Failure and Kim Eagle, MD, MACC, from University of Michigan to speak about Principles of Preoperative Evaluation and Perioperative Management. Additionally, 11 local experts will address a wide range of cardiology topics that include management of aortic stenosis, advanced heart failure, noninvasive evaluation of coronary artery disease, the role of PCI in stable CAD, dyslipidemia updates, and cardiovascular risk factor assessment in children.

4 Objectives Upon completion of the symposium, participants will be able to: Consider the value of contemporary management of aortic stenosis and review options for intervention on severe aortic stenosis, including transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and surgical aortic valve replacement Assess indications and case selection for advanced heart failure therapies, including global and local advanced therapies Apply outpatient strategies for prevention of hospital readmissions due to congestive heart failure exacerbations Learn to implement various modalities in the evaluation and treatment of syncope Compare the benefits of functional versus anatomic noninvasive evaluation of coronary artery disease (CAD) Apply the appropriate techniques for cardiovascular risk factor assessment in children Evaluate the impact of PCI in stable coronary artery disease and compare to the role in acute coronary syndrome Learn to incorporate principles of preoperative evaluation and perioperative management in their clinical practice Choose to integrate updates in recent trials and new therapies for dyslipidemia while considering controversies generated by recent guideline updates Foster opportunities for advancing lifestyle medicine in WNC Relate how epidemiological transition and the resultant double disease burden of populations in the developing world have resulted in the current crisis in managing the emergence of the epidemic of chronic diseases found in these locations in the world Biennial Cardiovascular Symposium 2016 This activity has been supported through independent educational grants from Amgen, Boston Scientific, Gilead, Novartis and St. Jude Medical.
5 Keynote Speakers Akshay Desai, MD, MPH Akshay Desai, MD, MPH is Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and is in the Cardiovascular Division of Brigham and Women s Hospital. He recieved his medical degree and Masters of Public Health from Harvard Medical School. Dr. Desai is a clinical heart failure specialist with an investigative interest in improving care delivery and clinical outcomes in heart failure patients. He has a growing national reputation as an expert in HF-PEF and innovative strategies to prevent heart failure readmission that is supported by a record of original research and editorial contributions in these areas. Kim Allen Eagle, MD, MACC Dr. Kim Eagle is the Albion Walter Hewlett Professor of Internal Medicine and Director of the Cardiovascular Center at the University of Michigan Health System. He graduated from Oregon State University in 1976 and from Tufts University Medical School in He completed his residency and chief residency in Internal Medicine at Yale-New Haven Hospital from 1979 to 1983 followed by research and clinical fellowships in cardiology and health services research at Harvard Medical School and The Massachusetts General Hospital. He has published more than 406 peer-reviewed articles, 49 chapters, and edited 8 books. He was a member of the team which created the University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center. Additionally, Dr. Eagle has served the American College of Cardiology as a director of numerous extramural programs, a member of its Guideline Task Force, Chair of the Task Force for the Development of Performance Measures, annual Scientific Sessions Program Committee, and is the editor of the American College of Cardiology s CardioSource Journal Scan. If registration is received after September 23rd, the total will be the registration fee + $ Cancellations received at least two weeks in advance of the program date will receive a full refund unless otherwise noted. Cancellations received between two weeks and up to 48 hours prior to the program date will receive a 70% refund or full credit toward a future MAHEC program unless otherwise noted.
