1 OFFICE OF ADADEMIC AND STUDENT AFFAIRS AUBURN UNIVERSITY HARRISON SCHOOL OF PHARMACY July 24, 2013 Memo To: Constance Relihan, Ph.D. Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education George Flowers, Ph.D. Dean, Graduate School From: Subject: Paul W. Jungnickel, Ph.D. Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs Renumbering of Courses for Harrison School of Pharmacy Due to the administrative authority for the Harrison School of Pharmacy (HSOP) being transferred to the Graduate School, I am submitting a request for renumbering of courses in the Doctor of Pharmacy program to the 9000 level. Please note the following materials that accompany this request. List of Courses to be Renumbered: The appended list contains all courses that will need to be renumbered. Please note that in the renumbering scheme, designations from the HSOP s three departments will be eliminated and all courses will carry the PYDI (Pharmacy Interdepartmental) designation. Please also note that many courses have been given two numbers, one ending in 0 and another ending in 6. Given the extensive use of videoconferencing in our program, we have been asked to do this by the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment in order to meet SACS accreditation standards. According to Dr. Drew Clark, all courses in which the instructor is not physically present in the classroom for at least 50 percent of the time are to be considered distance education courses and are to be given course numbers ending in 6. Thus the courses ending in 6 will primarily be used in two situations: 1. Courses which are primarily taught by Auburn Campus faculty members and are videoconferenced to the Mobile Campus: In these cases the Auburn Campus Students would be enrolled in a section with the course number ending in 0 and the Mobile Campus students would be enrolled in a section with the course number ending in Courses which are primarily taught by faculty members who are located at sites other than on the Auburn and Mobile Campuses: An example of this would be a course taught by a faculty member located at our Huntsville Clinical Education Center which is videoconferenced to both the Auburn and Mobile Campuses. In this case students 2316 Walker Building, Auburn, AL ; Telephone: ; Fax: w w w. a u b u r n. e d u

2 enrolled on both campuses would be placed in a course section with the course number ending in 6. List of Courses to be Deleted: These courses are no longer taught and need to be deleted from the Harrison School of Pharmacy s course inventory. The main reasons for deletion of these courses are the 2005 curricular revision of the Doctor of Pharmacy program which eliminated courses that were not removed from the inventory at that time and the closing of the Non- Traditional Doctor of Pharmacy degree program in List of Piggyback Courses: Seven courses are listed that are the 5000-level versions of piggyback courses offered by the Department of Pharmacal Sciences. The HSOP has no intention of continuing to offer these courses to Doctor of Pharmacy students. Since 6000-level courses cannot stand alone without a 5000-level version, the Department of Pharmacal Sciences will review the need for these courses. If the Department determines that these courses need to be offered to MS and PhD students, then it will submit for approval the required curricular requests. Revised Bulletin Descriptions for all Courses that are Renumbered at the 9000-level Please let me know if there is additional information I can provide or if you have questions. C: Dr. R. Lee Evans, Dean Dr. David Riese, Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Education Dr. George Crandell, Associate Dean, Graduate School
