3 Speakers Biographies Professor John O Brien Professor O Brien is the Chair in Old Age Psychiatry at the University of Cambridge. Prior to this he was Professor at Newcastle University and has also worked in Melbourne, London and Oxford. He has spent much of his career investigating the biological basis of dementia and ageing. He is also Associate Director and National Dementia Lead for the Dementias and Neurodegenerative Disease Research Network (DeNDRoN). His research interests include the role of biomarkers, especially MRI, SPECT and PET imaging, in the differential and early diagnosis of Dementia. Another main research interest is in late-life Depression, especially the role of vascular and inflammatory factors in precipitating and perpetuating depression in late life, and the ability of vascular interventions to improve or prevent depressive and cognitive symptoms. Professor Raj Kalaria Professor Kalaria is Professor of Cerebrovascular Pathology at Newcastle University. He is the Principal Investigator for the MRC Vascular Risk factors in Dementia programme and Director of the Cerebrovascular Laboratory at the Institute for Ageing and Health at Newcastle University. He is also a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for both the Alzheimer s Research Trust and the Medical Research Council. He has previously worked as Associate Professor of Neurology, Neurosciences and Pathology in Cleveland, Ohio USA. His research interests include the Neuropathology of Dementia and Cerebrovascular disease, CADASIL, Vascular Dementia, Alzheimer s disease and Stroke. Professor Carl Clarke Professor Clarke is Professor of Clinical Neurology, Neurotrauma and Neurodegeneration at the University of Birmingham. He also carries out clinics in movement disorders, headache and general neurology at City Hospital, Birmingham and at Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust. He is the Director of Research and Development at Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust. He was also the clinical advisor to the technical team preparing the NICE Parkinson s disease guidelines. Professor Clarke has performed a wide variety of research work in Parkinson s disease and headache disorders. He is currently leading large pragmatic clinical trials examining medical, surgical and rehabilitation interventions in the condition.

4 Speakers Biographies Professor Gregory Lip Professor Lip is Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Birmingham. He also works as an Academic Clinical Cardiologist at City Hospital, Birmingham. He is visiting Professor of Haemostasis, Thrombosis and Vascular Sciences at the University of Aston. He was clinical advisor to the guideline development group that wrote the NICE guidelines on the management of AF.The CHA 2 DS 2 -VASc and HAS-BLED scores for assessing stroke and bleeding risk, respectively were first proposed and independently validated following his research, and are now incorporated into major international management guidelines. Professor Lip has acted as Senior Editor for major international textbooks and journals, in Hypertension Thrombosis & Haemostasis. Professor Lip was also selected to the Thomson Reuters Science Watch list of Who and What was Hot in Scientific Research in 2012 (issued June 2013) which lists the most influential scientific researchers and research papers of the year. His work in improving AF clinical management won the Heart Rhythm UK Arrhythmia Alliance Team of the year award Professor Lip has research interests in Atrial Fibrillation, Hypertension, Heart failure, Thrombosis and Antithrombotic Therapy, and Ethnic Differences in Vascular Disease. He leads a laboratory-based research group into Thrombosis and Vascular Biology in Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke. Dr. Peter Bentham Dr. Peter Bentham is currently consultant for the Birmingham and Solihull Memory Assessment and Rare Dementia Service. He is also psychiatric consultant for the National Wolfram Syndrome Service. Dr. Bentham was first appointed as a NHS consultant in Old Age Psychiatry in 1992 and since 1998 has exclusively worked as a dementia specialist, thereby acquiring extensive clinical experience in dementia diagnosis. Dr. Bentham has also been a Principal Investigator in several large, independent, dementia clinical trials, including AD2000, CALM- AD, DOMINO-AD and HTA-SADD. In 2012 Dr. Bentham was awarded Fellowship of the Birmingham Society in recognition of his outstanding contribution to improve the quality of life in the City. Dr. R. Siripurapu Dr. Siripurapu is a consultant Neuroradiologist at Salford Royal NHS foundation Trust and Greater Manchester Neurosciences Unit. She is the lead for stroke imaging at the Neurosciences Unit. Dr. Siripurapu did subspecialty training in Neuroradiology in Manchester and a diagnostic neuroradiology fellowship at University of Toronto, Canada. She has a special interest in Stroke, CNS infections, Neurovascular and Skull base imaging.

5 CALL FOR POSTERS Submissions are invited from delegates for a poster presentation and competition. Deadline for submission of abstracts: Friday the 30 th May 2014: Applicants will be informed if their submissions have been accepted by Friday the 13th June A panel of 2 judges will select best poster winner and runner up. Cash prize of for the winner and for the runner up will be awarded at the end of conference The submission should contain an abstract of research findings, clinical innovations, audits, surveys, literature reviews or experiential work in psychiatry INSTRUCTIONS ON PREPARATION OF ABSTRACTS: 1. Abstracts should be typed single spaced, font size (12), Arial. Submission can be in Word format or Apple Mac documents (Pages). Ensure there are no spelling mistakes. 2. The title should be in bold, followed by the full name(s) of the author and all co-authors, including titles (e.g. Dr.) and their affiliations. The title must contain no abbreviations. 3. The abstract text must be no longer than 300 words. (excluding the title & authors names) 4. The abstract should state the aims, methods, results and comments or conclusions. 5. Bibliographic references, tables and appendices must not be included in the abstract. 6. Recommended poster size for display is A0, or A1. 7. You may submit more than one abstract. 8.
