4 Taube Foundation Huntington s Disease Symposium Kanbar Hall, Jewish Community Center 3200 California Street San Francisco, California who should attend this course This course is intended for practicing physicians in the areas of neurology, psychiatry, geriatrics, and pediatrics. Topics are also intended for clinicians and basic scientists in genetic counseling, nursing, neuroscience, biochemistry, and molecular genetics. Attendees from the Bay Area and Northwestern United States are anticipated. Educational Objectives Participants will learn about progress in the basic sciences and in the clinic relevant to the basic biology of Huntington's disease and the quest for a cure. Dr. James Gusella will describe the successful search for the genetic basis of the disease and current thoughts regarding its pathophysiology. Additional speakers will discuss cellular and molecular substrates of the disease, including protein structure, folding, and the impact of aging on these processes. In addition, behavioral approaches to Huntington's disease and strategies for the development of potential therapies will be discussed. AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE COURSE, PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO: Describe the genetic basis of Huntington's disease. Describe the biochemical basis through which the Huntington's disease mutation alters protein structure. Describe cellular mechanisms through which Huntington protein misfolding leads to neurodegeneration. Describe mechanisms through which aging facilitates neurodegeneration. Describe behavioral approaches to Huntington's disease. Identify emerging therapies for Huntington's disease.
