2 Spine Surgery Symposium Target Audience Neurosurgeons, spine surgeons, neurosurgery nurses and nurse practitioners Overview This half-day symposium will present the surgical spine specialist with a comprehensive study of current trends and recent advances in diagnostic and surgical approaches to the care of patients suffering from spinal disorders. Nationally recognized experts in the spine community will focus on key issues and breakthrough treatments, followed by faculty discussions with audience participation. Educational Objectives Upon completion of this symposium, participants should be better able to: Explain the complexities of pathology that can be treated with minimally invasive spine surgery. Recognize the indications and contraindications for complex minimally invasive surgery. Critically evaluate the scientific literature regarding the benefits of minimally invasive spine surgery in order to more clearly assess its role in contemporary spine surgery. Consider evidence-based data to determine patient selection and optimal approaches to spine surgery. Implement best-practice strategies for lumbar stabilization procedures considering the basic rationale for using implants of various rigidities and their differing effects on clinical outcome. Differentiate between various biomechanical properties (stiffness, modulus of elasticity, durability, reproducibility) that affect an implant s behavior. Determine the optimal surgical approach to the anterior thoracic and lumbar spine considering the relative benefits and risks of available options. Examine the long-term results of lumbar stabilization using semi-rigid rods. Identify various clinical scenarios in which semi-rigid rods are indicated and contraindicated. Implement appropriate strategies in order to avoid complications sometimes seen in minimally invasive spine surgery. Faculty Sergio M.
