1 Pain Management and End-of-Life Care: Thursday and Friday June 9-10, 2005 The Fairmont Hotel San Francisco, CA A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH TO PATIENT CARE PRESENTED BY THE SCHOOLS OF MEDICINE, NURSING AND PHARMACY

2 This course is designed for all physicians, nurses, and pharmacists who care for patients in pain or with lifethreatening illness. As a result of California law, AB 487, all physicians must take 12 hours of CME in pain management and palliative care before December 31, This course is designed to meet this requirement. Our nationally recognized faculty will offer practical, usable, clinically relevant information regarding: Pain assessment and treatment Management of non-pain symptoms Treatment of back pain and other common pain syndromes Communicating with dying patients Legal and regulatory issues Ethical issues at the end of life Spiritual and psychological growth at the end of life Educational Objectives At the end of this activity course participants should be able to: Perform a comprehensive pain assessment Develop a treatment plan for patients with acute and chronic pain including: cancer pain, neuropathic pain, back pain, arthritis, and fibromyalgia Describe approaches for managing nausea and vomiting List strategies for effective communication with dying patients Describe the major ethical, legal, and regulatory issues that arise in pain management and end-of-life care Develop strategies to provide pain management and end-of-life care for patients with substance abuse issues Describe the signs and symptoms and how to care for patients and their families during the last 24 hours of life Understand the needs of caregivers and how to support patients, families and ourselves
