1 Service Update for October Newsletter 1. Walk in Community ECG Service at Surbiton & Raynes Park. New Vitreoretinal Service is up-and-running at Kingston Hospital The Royal Eye Unit is proud to announce the launch of the vitreoretinal service (VR). The VR service will offer surgery for urgent sight-threatening conditions such as retinal detachment and vitreous or submacular haemorrhage. It will also complement the existing retinal service by providing surgery locally for patients with macular hole, epiretinal membrane and complications of diabetic retinopathy, thus avoiding those patients the inconvenience of having to be referred elsewhere to have these procedures. This obviously will improve the patient experience and their overall satisfaction with their care at Kingston Hospital. LOCATION DAY FREQUENCY SUBSPECIALTY CONSULTANT Royal Eye Unit, Kingston Hospital Tuesday AM & PM Thursday AM & PM Weekly Vitreoretinal Surgery Mr. Mostafa Elgohary How to refer and contact details Please refer via will be made available on Choose & Book in the near future. 4 Patients with floaters or flashing lights Patient with sudden, painless loss of vision or field of vision Patients with metamorphopsia (micropsia, macropsia or distortion of vision) Patients with diabetic retinopathy or vitreous haemorrhage Patient with traumatic or inherited retinal disorders Patients with complicated cataract surgery Patients with ocular trauma, recent or old Patients with uveitis Criteria Exclusions Patients of neurological visual field loss Paediatric patients below 6 years (those can still be seen at Kingston but should be discussed first) The REU has recently invested in a brand new state-of-the art ceiling mounted Lumera 700 Zeiss surgical microscope with video-recording facility and that has a wide angle viewing system to enable operating on the vitreous body and the retina. It is quite an exciting time to be at Kingston said Mr. Mostafa Elgohary, who was appointed in November of last year and is setting up and running the service. We are intent on making the REU a centre of excellence, providing a comprehensive and responsive eye service to the patients in our community in Kingston as well as in the surrounding boroughs added Mr. Elgohary. The ophthalmic health need of the community is growing and so is our unit and with the VR service in place, the REU will be one of the biggest eye units in South West London. Mr. Elgohary obtained his higher specialist training in ophthalmology at the North Thames program, which included rotations between Moorfields Eye Hospital, Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford, University College London Hospital and the Royal Free Hospital. He subsequently completed two years of VR surgery fellowship training at Moorfields Eye Hospital after which he spent another year completing another fellowship in paediatric VR surgery at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Canada.
5 Patient Feedback I really was impressed about how speedy the arrangements were and I was very happy to recover my vision after the gas bubble went away (first patient to present to the eye casualty with retinal detachment). I really did not feel a thing throughout and was glad to have my sight back (patient who had chronic inflammation in her eye). I was told that my vision could take 3 to 6 months to fully recover but it is already much clearer and less distorted than before the surgery (patient that had an epiretinal membrane peeling surgery said he was pleased to have waited for the surgery to be done by Mr. Elgohary at Kingston and was very happy that the distortion in his right eye vision has almost completely gone after suffering from it for a year).
