3 Lesson 2 Part One Reading for Information Read this article about elephants. Then answer questions about the article. Choose the best answer for Numbers 1 through. Elephants are the largest land animals, standing about 10 feet tall and weighing as much as 11,000 pounds! The trunk of an elephant alone can stretch to a length of 6 to 8 feet. The female elephant is known as a cow, and the male is a bull. Elephants under the age of 11 are calves. A cow has a calf about every 5 years. The pregnancy lasts from 18 to 22 months, which is the longest gestation period in the animal world. Once the calf is born, its mother, sisters, and cousins look after it. Elephants are found in Africa and India. The African elephant is larger than the Asian elephant. There are other differences between the two animals, but they are more alike than they are different. Both their trunks contain over 50,000 muscles. On the end of each trunk are fingers. An African elephant has two fingers, and an Asian elephant has one finger. An African elephant can use its fingers to pick up a single seed from the ground. An Asian elephant is more likely to pick up a small object by curling the end of its trunk around the object. In Swahili, an African language, the word for trunk is mkono, meaning hand. This meaning is not inaccurate, considering all an elephant can do with its trunk. When necessary, the trunk can be used as an ax to break branches off trees, as an arm to comfort a friend or a baby, as a defensive weapon, as a straw to suck up water, as a trumpet, as a snorkel (breathing tube) to cross deep rivers, and even as an eating utensil. Both African and Asian elephants have tusks. Tusks are actually very long teeth. Tusks keep growing during the elephant s lifetime. Elephants use their tusks to dig for water, to turn over trees, and to fight. An elephant is either right-tusked or left-tusked. The tusk an elephant uses more often is shorter, pointed, and polished. A female African elephant has long tusks. The tusks of a female Asian elephant are significantly smaller. Like humans, elephants live in family groups. Family members form loving bonds, usually for life. They eat, sleep, play, and bathe together. Each family has a cow who is a matriarch, or leader, of the family group. The matriarch knows where to find water and food. She makes all the decisions and confronts enemies first and most aggressively. Living in an elephant family would be like living with your grandmother, who is the matriarch, as well as with your mother, sister, brothers, cousins, and aunts. Your father and uncles would not live with you. Adult bulls live on their own or with other bulls. If you are a female, you would stay with this Asian Elephant African Elephant family for your entire life. If you are a male, your grandmother would force you out of the family when you became a teenager. 7 Go on to next page
