1 2018 DALLAS SLEEP SURVEY Sleep Habits & Challenges of Dallas-Area Residents
2 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY It is well-researched and widely accepted that sleep is a major contributing factor to overall health and wellness. Yet, when compared to other factors like diet and exercise, it is an often overlooked or compromised priority that takes a backseat in the cadence of our daily lives. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than one-third of American adults are not getting enough sleep on a regular basis. In Dallas, the 2017 American Fitness Index report showed that only 67% of Dallas area residents were getting the recommended minimum of seven or more hours of sleep per day one of several factors contributing to Dallas ranking 38th of 50 on the index, which measures health and community fitness at the metropolitan level in the United States. Furthermore, the CDC regards insufficient sleep as a public health problem. Studies have shown a number of serious impacts of not getting enough quality sleep, some of which include: Increased risk of death or injury due to drowsy driving Increased risk of workplace accidents, resulting in death or injury Increased risk of developing a host of comorbidities, such as depression, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes In an attempt to bring awareness to the issue, sleep expert and founder of Sleep Dallas, Dr. Kent Smith, D-ABDSM, ASBA and President of the American Sleep and Breathing Academy developed his 30-Day Sleep Challenge, inviting Dallas area residents with sleep challenges to prioritize sleep by implementing strategies to improve sleep hygiene, sleep quality and sleep efficiency. As part of the challenge, all participants completed a preassessment sleep survey to measure the current state of their sleep quality and efficiency, as well as their personal sleep habits. Key findings from the pre-assessment study reveal some interesting data about the state of sleep in Dallas, which have been detailed here within. Most notably, the pre-challenge survey discovered that nearly two-thirds of the study respondents do not meet the recommended minimum of seven hours of sleep on weeknights. Additionally, the study showed that participants continuously engage in electronic device usage one hour prior to bedtime a known factor impeding sleep quality DALLAS SLEEP SURVEY
3 OTHER KEY FINDINGS Chronic Comorbidities 41% of respondents have been diagnosed with high blood pressure 16% of respondents have been diagnosed with depression Dietary Habits 7 of respondents drink multiple caffeinated beverages per day with 4 of respondents reporting drinking at least one caffeinated beverage during the afternoon hours Trouble Staying Asleep 5 of respondents report not being able to fall back asleep after waking up too early at least a few nights per week 73% of respondents report falling back to sleep after waking during the night as somewhat difficult or very difficult Waking Early and Tiredness 68% of Sleep Challenge respondents reported earlier wake times than the national average of 7:08am 1 69% of respondents report waking up feeling unrefreshed at least a few nights per week 70% of respondents said they rarely or never get a good night s sleep on weeknights The good news is that most people can meet their sleep needs by practicing good sleep hygiene and by making modifications to their sleep environment and specific lifestyle habits that are contributing to a lack of sleep or poor sleep quality. Of the Sleep Challenge participants that successfully completed the 30-day commitment to better sleep, people getting the recommended minimum seven hours of sleep increased from 36% to 61%. METHODOLOGY The 2018 Dallas Sleep Survey, conducted by Sleep Dallas, was completed by 44 Dallasarea residents ahead of their participation in a 30-Day Sleep Challenge that focused on employing strategies to improve their sleep quality. The challenge was guided by Dr. Kent Smith of Sleep Dallas. The survey questionnaires were sent out in January Fitbit: (2017, June 29). How Much Sleep Do Fitbit Users Really Get? 5 HEALTH OF RESPONDENTS The Center for Disease Control and Prevention states that 29% of Americans or nearly 1 in every 3 adults have high blood pressure, and the 2016 National Survey on Drug Use & Health showed that 6.7% of American adults had at least one major depressive episode in the previous year. In contrast, of Dallas-area respondents with concerns about sleep, almost 41% reported having been medically diagnosed with high blood pressure and 15.9% with depression. 6 CAFFEINE INTAKE Caffeine is the most commonly consumed stimulant in the United States, with 8 of the population consuming at least one caffeinated beverage per day. 2 Caffeine s full stimulating effect is generally felt minutes after consumption. It then takes 4-6 hours to eliminate half of the caffeine consumed, with the remaining amount staying in the body for much longer. This means that, for someone who metabolizes caffeine normally and has normal sensitivity to it, caffeine consumed in the mid to late afternoon hours continues to have a stimulating effect in the evening hours, likely impacting one s ability to fall asleep. Almost 73% of respondents reported consuming at least two caffeinated beverages per day, with 11% consuming three to four caffeinated beverages per day. HOW MANY CUPS OR CANS OF CAFFEINATED BEVERAGES, SUCH AS SOFT DRINKS, COFFEE AND TEA, DO YOU TYPICALLY DRINK EACH DAY? 11% 3-4 Drinks 7% 0 Drinks 61% 2-3 Drinks 21% 1 Drink 2 Mitchell DC, Knight CA, Hockenberry J, Teplansky R, Hartman TJ.. 8 SLEEP TIME & SOCIAL JETLAG The National Sleep Foundation recommends at least seven hours of sleep each night for adults older than 18 years of age. Of the Dallas-area respondents with concerns about sleep, only 36% reported getting the recommended seven hours or more of sleep during a typical weeknight or night before a workday. ON WORKDAYS OR WEEKDAYS, HOW MANY HOURS DO YOU TYPICALLY SLEEP DURING THE NIGHT (DO NOT INCLUDE NAPS)? Hours Hours 11% Hours 50% Hours Hours 0% 10% 20% 30% 40% 50% Social Jet Lag Social jet lag is a phenomenon in which a person s sleep habits, especially their sleep and wake times, and/or total number of hours asleep, vary between weeknights / nights before a workday and weekends. Oftentimes, we attempt to catch up on sleep during the weekend to make up for a sleep deficit that has accrued during the week/work days. The phenomenon is concerning because studies have shown that social jet lag contributes to a lower standard of health (with a specific link to an increased risk of heart disease), worse mood, and an increase in fatigue and sleepiness. The discrepancy between the number of hours Dallas-area respondents reported on weeknights and that which they reported on non-work days / weekends indicates that many experience social jet lag. While only 36% of respondents reported getting sufficient sleep during the week, 61% reported getting at least the recommended seven hours of sleep on non-work days or weekends DALLAS SLEEP SURVEY
9 ON NON-WORK DAYS OR WEEKENDS, HOW MANY HOURS DO YOU TYPICALLY SLEEP DURING THE NIGHT (DO NOT INCLUDE NAPS)? Hours 11% Hours 27% Hours 34% Hours 20% Hours Hours 0% 10% 20% 30% 40% During the week, 68% of respondents report waking earlier than 7am, and by contrast, on nonwork days or the weekend, nearly 66% of respondents report waking up later than 7am. This data indicates that a significant portion of the challenge participants experience social jet lag. 12 WAKING DURING THE NIGHT Of the Dallas-area respondents with sleep concerns, over 97% report waking during the night, with a significant number (61.36%) often unable to attribute their waking to a stimulus. Of the stimuli noted, the need to go to the bathroom, noise, thinking about work or something else, and stress were the most reported. WHAT, IF ANYTHING, AWAKENS YOU DURING THE NIGHT? Of the Dallas-area respondents with concerns about sleep, 68% report regularly watching TV in the hour before bed and nearly 49% report spending time on their computer, tablet, or other handheld electronic device DALLAS SLEEP SURVEY
