1 Sleep Health indicator report Background Key findings The purpose of this health indicator report is to provide information about sleep duration and quality among residents aged 12 and over living in Halton Region and Ontario. Sleep is essential for a productive lifestyle and overall health and wellness. 1 Sleep is a restorative activity and it improves attention, behaviour, memory, and overall mental and physical health. 1 Insufficient sleep, even on a single night, has a number of immediate consequences including lower alertness, negative mood, reduced motor skills, longer response times, and impaired attention and memory. 2 Not getting enough sleep can have long-term consequences for health including weight gain, diabetes, and heart disease. 2 51% of Halton residents reported not getting the recommended amount of sleep. 18% of Halton residents reported having trouble falling or staying asleep most or all of the time. Females were more likely than males to report having trouble falling or staying asleep. 61% of Halton residents reported finding sleep refreshing most or all of the time. Older adults aged 65+ were more likely than adults aged and to report finding sleep refreshing. 7% of Halton residents reported having trouble staying awake most or all of the time. This health indicator report uses data from the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) HALTON REGION 1

3 Sleep duration Halton vs. Ontario In , 51% of Halton residents reported getting less than the recommended hours of sleep, 47% reported getting the recommended hours of sleep, and 1%* reported getting more than the recommended hours of sleep for their age range. In Ontario, 49% of Halton residents reported getting less than the recommended hours of sleep, 49% reported getting the recommended hours of sleep, and 2% reported getting more than the recommended hours of sleep for their age range Percentage of residents aged 12 and over who reported not getting enough sleep, getting the recommended amount of sleep for their age range, or getting too much sleep, Halton Region and Ontario, There were no statistically significant differences between Halton and Ontario. 5 Trouble falling or staying asleep Halton vs. Ontario In , 25% of Halton residents reported never having trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, 32% reported rarely having trouble, 25% reported sometimes having trouble, 13% reported having trouble most of the time, and 5%* reported having trouble all of the time. In Ontario, 26% of residents reported never having trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, 29% reported rarely having trouble, 29% reported sometimes having trouble, 11% reported having trouble most of the time, and 5% reported having trouble all of the time. Sex In , females were more likely than males to report having trouble falling asleep or staying asleep most or all of the time, and this difference was statistically significant. 7 Find sleep refreshing Halton vs. Ontario In , 4%* of Halton residents reported never finding sleep refreshing, 10% reported rarely finding sleep refreshing, 25% reported sometimes, 42% most of the time and 19% reported finding sleep refreshing all of the time. In Ontario, 5% of residents reported never finding sleep refreshing, 11% reported rarely finding sleep refreshing, 26% reported sometimes, 43% most of the time and 16% reported finding sleep refreshing all of the time. 9 Trouble staying awake Halton vs. Ontario In , 37% of Halton residents reported never having trouble staying awake, 33% reported rarely having trouble staying awake, 23% sometimes, 5%* most of the time and 2%* all of the time. In Ontario, 39% of residents reported never having trouble staying awake, 30% reported rarely having trouble staying awake, 24% sometimes, 5% rarely and 2% reported never finding sleep refreshing. 11 About CCHS Data notes The Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) is a voluntary, cross-sectional survey that collects information related to health status, health system utilization and health determinants for the Canadian population. CCHS is conducted by Statistics Canada. Each year, CCHS surveys 65,000 people aged 12 and over from across Canada. The survey provides health information at the provincial and regional levels. CCHS is designed to provide reliable estimates at the health unit level every 2 years. In 2015, CCHS was redesigned, including major changes to content and methodology. Therefore, it is not recommended to compare data from the 2015 cycle onwards to past CCHS cycles. Definitions: Gets the recommended amount of sleep means that the number of hours that they reported they usually sleep in a night falls within the range of sleep time recommended for their age group by the National Sleep Foundation (see table on page 2 for sleep recommendation ranges).
