In 1992, the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine was established by Congress to provide fair scientific evaluation of alternative therapies. Today the center sponsors studies to help us learn more about the effects of one form of alternative therapy: meditation. Meditation is considered to be a type of mind-body medicine, which focuses on interactions among the brain, the rest of the body, and behavior. It has been used to treat people with anxiety, pain, depression, stress, insomnia, and emotional symptoms associated with heart disease and cancer. Meditation has been shown to induce changes in the body s fight or flight response, which is directly associated with the involuntary nervous system.

4 Chapter 5-Consciousness The Big Idea: Consciousness includes many states, both waking and altered. Essential Questions: 1. What is consciousness? 2. Why do humans need sleep and what are common sleep problems? 3. How can altered states of consciousness, including hypnosis, be achieved? 4. What is the relationship between drugs and consciousness? Objective: To identify what consciousness is.

7 Consciousness as a Construct What is consciousness? Why might two individuals have different views of consciousness? What tests might a psychologist devise to test how sleep deprivation affects consciousness?
8 Meanings of Consciousness What is sensory awareness? How do you think selective attention works? When does a child develop a sense of self? How can a memory of an event trigger an emotional response?
9 Different Levels of Consciousness How do preconscious ideas turn into conscious ideas? According to Freud, where is information that people do not wish to recall stored? What is the difference between the unconscious and the non-conscious levels? What can cause altered states of consciousness?
10 The Study of Consciousness Closure On a piece of paper that you can turn in: Identify and explain the three meanings and four levels of consciousness. You write a paragraph, you can bullet, you can make a graphic organizer, pretty much whatever helps you communicate the information to me. (Just don t skimp on the details.)

12 Current Research in Psychology Sleep Deprivation in Teens Lack of sleep affects both the mind and the body. Sleep deprivation can produce mental states of fatigue, drowsiness, and irritability. In addition, lack of sleep can contribute to physical symptoms such as weight gain, heart disease, and other symptoms and ailments. Teenagers who do not get enough sleep can also develop these problems. Studies show a link between lack of sleep and increased rates of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke. Teenagers need 9.2 hours of sleep a night. Many high school students get less than 9.2 hours of sleep a Lack of adequate sleep puts teenagers at risk for weight gain, poor school performance, car accidents, alcohol abuse, and drug abuse. Starting school later might be one possible solution to insufficient sleep by teenagers.
