1 Early Labor - Touch Relaxation Breathe: Deep, abdominal breathing. Position: Sit in a way that opens up your pelvis. Partner s job: look for someplace mom is holding tension, touch her there, stroking lightly to remind mom to relax. Mom s job: purposely tense up areas of your body, so your partner has to search for where tension is. (This is just for practice. In labor, your body will create tension on its own!)

2 Early Labor Breathing: Cleansing breath; then deep breathing. Mom s job: leaning forward and swaying. Takes weight of baby off your back, and encourages baby to rotate and descend. Partner s job: Lightly rub mom s back or stroke hair. Time the contraction.

3 Early Labor Breathing: Deep, abdominal, or normal sleep-like breaths. Mom s job: Relax Partner s Job: Massage mom s hands, and talk to her about what you re looking forward to about being a parent, and about caring for the baby.

4 Early Labor - Night-time Breathing: Deep, abdominal, or normal sleep-like breaths. Mom s job: Relax Partner s Job: Talk her through a visualization, Imagine yourself floating in a warm ocean the water is holding you up, so you can let your whole body relax your uterus muscles will do the work they need to do, but let your other muscles relax.

5 Active Labor Breathing: Slow Hee-hee breathing. Position: Slow dance. Being upright and moving helps baby to rotate and descend. Comfort: Sway back and forth. Partner can sing to her, if desired, or Whisper sweet nothings in her ear.

6 Active Labor The Lunge Breathing: Slow breathing at beginning and end. Hee-Hee Blow Breathing. Position. Lunge opens up pelvis; movement helps baby rotate and descend. Rhythm of movement distracts mom from pain. Partner: support her while lunging. Encouragement! Time contraction.

7 Active Labor Pelvic Tilts Why: Great for back pain! Encourages baby to rotate. Breathing: Slide breathing. Arch your back and tuck your tail as you take in a deep breath, and then let back relax to flat as you blow it out a little at a time. Partners: Lightly rub her back.

8 Active Labor Breathing: Slow deep breaths at beginning and end of contraction. Hee-Hee Breathing over the peak. Comfort: Counterpressure or double - hip squeeze.

9 Transition Contractions are very intense! Mom is frightened, saying I can t do this. It s too much! Breathing: Slide Breathing. (deep breath in, blow out a little at a time.) Comfort: Speak calmly, breathe with her, reassure her that this is transition and the baby will be here soon.

10 Transition Contractions 2 minutes apart, 75 seconds long, very intense. Mom is discouraged and exhausted. Breathing: Counted Hee-Hee Blow. Comfort: Partners stay as calm and relaxed as possible, stay close to her, coach her through breathing. Encourage her to open her eyes and look at you.

11 Second Stage (Pushing) Breathing: Take a deep breath. Tuck chin down toward chest, and bear down* for five to seven seconds (partner counts out loud) while exhaling through pursed lips. Relax, taking a quick breath in, then bear down again. (Note: the illustration shows a great position in a hospital bed. In class, you can replicate part of this position by kneeling on the floor over a chair.) * Note for labor rehearsal. Moms should not really bear down during role-played contractions. Pretend to bear down.

12 Second Stage (Pushing) Second stage was going very quickly, caregivers want to slow it down to give perineum time to stretch. Breathing: Tilt chin up a little and pant. Comfort: Effleurage: gentle, light stroking: of her hair, her arms, whatever. Helps to soothe her, and distract her from contraction. Pant with her.

13 Second Stage (Pushing) Baby is crowning, and mom is actively pushing. Breathing: Take deep breath. Tuck chin chest, and (PRETEND) to bear down for five to seven seconds while exhaling through pursed lips. Relax, taking a quick breath in, bear down again. Comfort: Partner supports mom in squat position. Do some form of Supported Squat.
