12 Sleep is Essential ALL animal species sleep. ALL animals need recovery sleep when they stay awake longer than usual. ALL animals suffer serious consequences when they lack sleep.

14 Why do we Sleep? help conserve energy decreases metabolism only about 5 10% Other reasons??? Physical well-being (illness recovery, etc) Mental well-being (stress reduction) Cognition and Problem solving

16 Human sleep Average adult needs 7-8 hours sleep a day 1/3 of your life is spent asleep 122 days of the year If you live 75 years, 25 years of that will have been spent asleep. Dreaming occurs 5 times in an 8 hour period That is 1,825 dreams a year!

23 Sleep Heals Study: people who averaged <7 hrs/night were about 3x more likely to develop cold symptoms than study volunteers who got >8 hrs/night (when exposed to rhinovirus) In addition, those individuals who got better quality sleep were the least likely to come down with a cold.

24 Sleep Reduces CV Risk Study : -even modestly reduced sleep (six to seven hours per night) was associated with a greatly increased the risk of coronary artery calcification (clogged arteries), a predictor of future myocardial infarction (heart attack)

25 Sleep improves memory Sleep Deprivation causes A decrease in working memory (holds information in the mind so it can be used for tasks) A decrease in higher-level cognitive functions including decision making and reasoning

27 Sleep and Obesity Study #1: -people who slept <6 hrs/ night were much more likely to have excess body weight -people who slept 8 hrs/ night had the lowest body fat Study #2: -babies who are "short sleepers" are much more likely to develop obesity later in childhood
