1 Page 1 of 10 Reference No. GHPI1157_11_17 Department Gastrointetinal Review due November hour ph impedance monitoring Introduction This leaflet gives you information about your 24 hour ph/impedance monitoring test. Any questions that you may have will be answered by a member of the clinic staff. Your appointment is at the Gastrointestinal Laboratory (GI) located in the GI/Lung Function Department at Cheltenham General Hospital. You should report to Lung Function Department reception on arrival at the hospital. What is 24-hour ph impedance monitoring? 24-hour ph impedance monitoring measures the amount of reflux in your oesophagus. This is the acid that passes from your stomach back up into your oesophagus (food pipe) and the test will indicate how severe your problem is. Prior to this test you would have had an oesophageal manometry test performed either at the same appointment or in the recent past. If needed, a leaflet about oesophageal manometry would have been included with your appointment letter. If you are having oesophageal manometry and a 24 hour study the appointment will take about one hour. If you are just having a 24 hour study the appointment will take about 30 minutes. Why am I having this test? Your consultant has referred you for this test to assess the amount of stomach acid that could be refluxing (flowing back) from your stomach up into your oesophagus. Consent The physiologist will explain the procedure to you and answer any questions that you may have. When they are sure that you understand the procedure you will be asked to sign a consent form. Medication You may need to stop taking some medications up to 7 days before this test. If so, a slip will be attached to this leaflet telling you what medications to stop and when.
2 Page 2 of 10 If there is no slip attached you can continue taking all of your usual medications. If you are diabetic, please contact the GI/Lung Function Department for advice regarding your medication. The number is at the end of this leaflet. Risks There are no major risks associated with this test. You may feel some slight discomfort from the tube in your nose or throat during the test but most people tolerate the tube for the full 24 hours. If you find you really cannot tolerate the tube for any reason, simply remove the securing tape; breathe in then out whilst slowly removing the tube. Place the tube in a polythene bag with the recorder and return it to the GI/Lung Function Department the following day, as arranged. This will be discussed further with you at your appointment. Before the test You must not have anything to eat or drink for 6 hours before the test. Your stomach must be empty before the test can be carried out. If you have not had a gastroscopy (a gastroscope is passed through the mouth down the gullet and into the stomach) or a barium swallow within the last 12 months, please contact the GI/Lung Function Department straight away on Tel: During the test In the examination room you will be made comfortable on an examination couch. A thin tube (catheter) is passed through your nose and down into the stomach. You will be given water to drink to help it down. It should feel no worse than swallowing a tablet. There may be some gagging while the tube is being inserted. You will be helped by a member of staff if this happens. The tube should not cause any pain or interfere with your breathing but some patients may experience feel lightheaded but this feeling will soon pass.
3 Page 3 of 10 The tube is held in place by a plaster on your nose and is passed underneath your clothing and connected to a monitoring device. The tube will remain in the oesophagus for 24 hours and you will be required to return to the department the following day to have the tube removed. The fitting of equipment will take approximately 15 minutes. Diary You will be given a diary sheet on which you will be asked to record your activities and food intake during the 24 hours. Any symptoms you experience should also be recorded. The staff will explain this to you before you leave the department. After the test You will be discharged home with the tube in place. You can carry on with your normal routine. You may return to work if you wish or be as active as you normally would be at home. You will be fit to drive after the procedure but if you are unsure, please arrange to be accompanied to each appointment, or arrange to use public transport. Follow up appointment You will be asked to attend the following day when the physiologist will remove the tube. Your diary sheet will be checked to ensure that the relevant information has been recorded. This appointment will take approximately 10 minutes. Results The consultant will review the results of the test and will decide whether further treatment is required. The consultant will tell you their decision either by telephone, letter or at an outpatient appointment. Contact information If you have any questions you would like to ask prior to your appointment, you can contact the GI/Lung Function Department.
