3 KEY POINTS From a scientific survey of 956 Athens-Clarke County residents. Weight 55% of all respondents were overweight or obese. 13% of respondents have been advised to lose weight because of cardiovascular disease. 67% of people over 50 have quit smoking. Smoking Only 1 of people over 50 currently smoke. 92% of respondents understand that secondhand smoke can cause cancer and other diseases in non-smokers. 84% of restaurant patrons do not smoke. Restaurants and Smoking 72% of respondents say they are bothered by secondhand smoke while eating. 94% of respondents would patronize smoke-free restaurants. 55% of respondents favor an ordinance to prohibit smoking in restaurants (only 34% are opposed). 78% of bar patrons do not smoke. Bars and Smoking 47% of bar patrons are bothered by secondhand smoke while at a bar. Only 4% of patrons like it. 87% of current bar patrons would patronize a smoke-free bar. 94% of bar patrons would not travel more than 10 miles to go to a bar that allows smoking. 43 Survey Procedure Phone Number Generation: A list of zip codes, inclusive of all of Clarke County, was developed using commercial mailing lists and mapping software. Comprehensive lists of phone numbers of Georgia were also purchased. All phone numbers matching Clarke County zip codes were selected. Approximately 10,000 telephone numbers were randomly selected from the list. The distribution was stratified (proportionately selected) according to the three digit number prefix. The list was unduplicated to insure all numbers in the list were unique. Research shows that around of all numbers are unlisted or new listings. Therefore, a series of numbers ( of the total or 6000) was randomly generated and stratified to match actual area code, prefix, and initial digit distributions. The numbers were matched against all Georgia numbers to make sure none existed in that database, and then they were unduplicated so that all the numbers were unique. They were added to the 10,000 telephone numbers and were shuffled randomly and printed. Calling procedure: Callers were instructed to only read the questionnaire as printed and not ad-lib or comment on the content. Respondents with detailed questions, complaints, suggestions or doubts about survey authenticity were routed to a supervisor on duty. At the onset of the survey, each caller was provided with a list of phone numbers (call list) and assigned a work station. Surveys were completed using CATI (Computer Aided Telephone Interviewing). As each phone number was called, the result of that call was recorded on the call list. If a respondent was reached and a survey completed, the survey number was entered next to the phone number on the call list and the phone number was also entered on the computer. The callers initials are also placed on the call list and entered into the computer. Potential respondents were first asked if that they were residents of Clarke County. The caller then requested to speak to the person in the household older than 18 years with the most recent birthday. This removes possible sampling bias introduced through just interviewing people who answer the phone. As the callers are working, a supervisor listens at random to their calling technique. At the end of each calling session, all the data are centrally compiled and checked for inconsistencies. Demographic frequencies are computed for all entered surveys. If a particular demographic group is disproportionately sampled, sampling criteria can be changed to more closely match the census distribution in the calling area. In this survey adults, 50 and older, were over sampled. Therefore some graphs and tables are stratified by age to avoid an age bias in the report. Ten percent of completed surveys are randomly selected and checked for validity by a supervisor by calling the respondent back. The respondent was asked if the call occurred, if the caller was professional etc. and then the respondent s demographic data was checked against what was recorded on the questionnaire. Enough questionnaires are completed to allow a sampling error rate of +/- 5% for major questions. The 95% confidence interval (accuracy) is shown in appropriate tables for each subset of respondents. -21-
