14 Lungs: Damaged Alveoli Alveoli are little air sacs in the lungs that hold oxygen when we breath Once alveoli get hard from tar, like the dry sponge, they pop The more a person smokes, the more alveoli they pop this is called emphysema Alveoli are like packing bubbles The more alveoli that pop, the worse a person s emphysema gets Most of the time, a person with emphysema continues smoking because they are addicted What happens to a person when their alveoli pop? it gets harder to breathe alveoli don t grow back
