Whatever we d must be measured in mral terms. -Elie Wiesel Just this past week the cigarette makers sued the Fd and Drug Administratin, seeking t ban graphic pictures and clr warnings n cigarette packaging and advertising. The gal f these disturbing images is t deter smking by infrming smkers f the danger with the pwer f image. These impressins depict rtting teeth and lips, dead bdies, diseased lungs, and trachetmy images It is interesting t nte that the psitin f the cigarette makers is based n vilatin f free speech and the first amendment. I have even mre issue with this tactic because f the Mind+Bdy=Cnnectin: the impact f the symbl with the message, cmbined with the influence f clr. I am nt sure wh came up with this brilliant campaign, but it must be the same grup that wants t put everyne in a red dress t stave 2011 Queen f Clr Enterprises 1

The lawsuit by these cigarette makers claimed the warnings required n later than September 22, 2012 wuld frce cigarette makers t "engage in anti-smking advcacy" n the gvernment's behalf. They managed t get the suit put n hld, saying that it vilates their free speech rights under the First Amendment. Accrding t a cmplaint filed with the U.S. District Curt in Washingtn, D.C. "The ntin that the gvernment can require thse wh manufacture a lawful prduct t emblazn half f its package with pictures and wrds admittedly drafted t persuade the public nt t purchase that prduct cannt withstand cnstitutinal scrutiny," said Flyd Abrams, a prminent First Amendment specialist representing the cigarette makers, in a statement. On June 22, 2009, President Obama signed the Family Smking Preventin and Tbacc Cntrl Act int law. This actin requires clr warnings cvering the tp half f the frnt and back panels f cigarette packages, and the tp 20 percent f printed material. Here is a link t a befre and after regulatins. Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary f the Department f Health & Human Services, in June said the new warnings wuld ensure that "every persn wh picks up a pack f cigarettes is ging t knw exactly what risks they are taking." The gal f ur gvernment and this particular campaign is was t stp children frm starting t smke, and t give adult smkers a new incentive t quit. The result will be an ever-present hypntic suggestin fr smkers and nn-smkers alike t manifest cancer and ther related issues when there is an interactin with cigarettes, smking, r a smker. These disturbing graphic images will imbed such a lvely message int ur subcnscius and d little t deter smking, yet will d a number n ur Mind+Bdy=Cnnectin. The cigarette cmpanies said the labels illegally frce them t make cnsumers "depressed, discuraged and afraid" t buy cigarettes, and turn each package int a "minibillbard" fr the gvernment. I wuld like t address this even further, ur subcnscius wrks WITH symbl, as well as clr and numbers (which is interpreted as symbl). T cmbine these images with the hypntic suggestins (I believe the gvernment refers t these as warning labels ) as well as clr withut prper research is irrespnsible. Nt nly is this disturbing as I stand in a checkut line and have these images bmbard my eyeballs, I can see these packages/images n tables and cunters fr small children t pick up and view. This suggestin des nt cme ut f the blue, last year I did sme research n a series f cmmercials fr smking cessatin, thinking they were abut an rganizatin that supprted nn-smkers, it was in actuality a cvert ad fr Chantix. I say cvert because it never mentined Pfizer r Chantix n the TV ad, yu fund it when yu fllwed the link. It was clever, and I was s disappinted. I believe they were frced t take them ff the air and I culdn t find the link, but I did write abut it in a previus Kick! I wuld like t say that I am and always have been a nn-smker. I DO NOT SUPPORT SMOKING, I wrk as a hypntherapist t help peple becme nn-smkers. My mther always smked, and then quit when I was 18 and quit fr ver 25 years. She decided after my sister and her children began smking t pick up a cigarette and the rest is histry. Smkers knw the risk, they understand the addictin and they chse t smke. My niece is a nurse, she sees the graphic effects f smking n a daily basis, therefre are thse images f cadavers and rtten lips and gums n her cigarette packaging ging t bther smene in her prfessin? I knw there are a lt f hypntists that smke, and in my family alne there are five nurses and all five smke. They have the human side f smking, s I d nt believe the packaging will deter them but packaging may well influence their health thrugh repetitin f symbl and fatalistic suggestins. Affirmatin wrk, hypnsis, and self-talk wrk and they wrk n matter what tne the suggestins may take: psitive r negative. As a prfessinal wrking with the Mind+Bdy cnnectin, and a certified hypntherapist, I wuld like t ffer tw different slutins fr this issue. I believe that bth are a win-win n all aspects. The first slutin is t raise the cst even higher n prducts. Persnally, my mther quit 30 years ag because she refused t pay mre than s much fr her cartn f cigarettes, and when the price went up past her limit, she quit-cld turkey. When was the last time yu set a price limit fr smething yu enjyed and when it exceeded that limit yu chse nt t purchase it? Mine was Starbucks specialty cffee, I refuse t pay $5 fr a café mcha and when I went thrugh t rder it and it came t $5.02 I said n thank yu and left. Sad, but determined in my prmise. My next slutin is t change the packaging t psitive. My practice is abut psitive scripting and psitive messages t enhance health and well-being. I remember reading years ag in a Luise Hay bk (f Hay Huse Publishing) t bless yur cigarettes. Rather than t remind yurself (and tell yur bdy) that they are killing yu, 2011 Queen f Clr Enterprises 3

Shifting the scripting arund the cigarette AND the smking is the key t being a nn-smker! Telling yur bdy that the cigarette des nt serve yur bdy, even telling yur bdy it des nt taste gd is a far better (and efficient) deterrent than staring at a trachetmy patient blwing smke ut f his neck. Thse that cntinue t smke d s because they tell themselves (and their bdy) that smking keeps them thin, calms their nerves, makes them feel grwn-up, and almst always with each puff and (each repeated affirmatin) I just can t seem t quit it is all hypnsis, s why nt be kind t yur bdy and yur self, change the self-talk that surrunds yur smking habit.
