5 Smoking Cessation: Program Description Why? : Our Goals Improve quit rates Improve members health Reduce costs What? : The Plan Provide members information, resources, and incentives to increase quit-related behaviors Fill a gap: identify smokers, and Provide advice and information for those who have not received it Bolster the effects for those who have received advice and information 5

6 Why smoking? 20% more than HIV, illegal drugs, alcohol, motor vehicle accidents, of all deaths in the U.S. 85% of lung cancer deaths suicide and murder combined. 4x the rate of coronary heart disease and stroke 90% of COPD deaths Particularly bad for women and their babies: infertility, preterm labor, stillbirth, sudden infant death syndrome, osteoporosis and hip fracture 30x the rate of cancer Not just lung cancer: leukemia, bladder cancer, cervical cancer, esophageal cancer, renal cancer, mouth and tongue cancer, pancreatic cancer, stomach cancer 6

8 Office Staff Contest How It Works Member Prizes Every eligible member that returns a completed survey to BCN will remain eligible for the monthly drawing for a $250 gift card. Eligible members: Commercial members aged IMPORTANT: BCNA members are NOT eligible for this contest. Office Staff Prizes BCN will provide gift card prizes for the entire office staff that distributed the Quit Guide and survey to the winning member. Survey Submission Options Office staff can encourage 3 submission options to members: give the completed survey back to you to fax to BCN complete and mail the member survey on their own complete the survey online at bcbsm.com/bcnsmokingsurvey 8

9 Office Staff Contest Initial Results We received a representative sample of smokers 22.2% of submissions were smokers By comparison, Michigan s smoking rate is 21.4% We re very encouraged by this! We received 43% of our goal for submitted surveys in 2014 A reasonable start, though lower than we d hoped We think this can be improved through: Better communication of the program on our part in advance Regular notifications of the winning office staffs through things like Provider News Increased incentives for office staffs 9

10 Office Staff Contest What s New? Increased Office Staff Winnings For the last six months of 2015, BCN will double the office staff winnings, to a total of $1000 Overall Submission Goal BCN hopes to receive 5000 new survey submissions during the last six months of If we reach this goal, we will increase the office staff award for all 2015 winners by another $500 Up to a total of $1500 in gift cards for each winning staff. Mail Letters on Their Behalf 3. Cover Postage Costs of Related Provider Mailings 4. Add Smoking Cessation Advice and Information to our Physician Recognition Program 12
