1 YOUR GUIDE TO LIVING A SMOKE-FREE LIFE When it s time to quit smoking, YOU KNOW WHY. WE KNOW HOW.

2 CONGRATULATIONS! You ve taken your first step to living a smoke-free life. In this guide, you ll find some important information all about the process of quitting smoking. I only need to take my nicotine replacement therapy until I don t feel the urge to smoke. For best results, complete the full course of therapy to increase your chances of success. Stop-smoking products with nicotine are just as harmful as cigarettes. Nicotine replacement therapy has a wellestablished safety record and doesn t contain the 7000 chemicals found in tobacco smoke. If I slip up and have a cigarette, I have to start over on day 1 of my quit plan. It s important to continue your quit plan right where you left off by using your nicotine replacement therapy as directed. CIGARETTE ADDICTION HAS TWO ELEMENTS Your body s physical addiction to nicotine and your brain s psychological addiction to your daily smoking routines. PHYSICAL ADDICTION Nicotine activates receptors in your brain that cause the release of chemicals, which can cause perceived pleasure and/or less anxiety and tension. Your brain gets used to these chemicals and wants that release to occur throughout the day to alleviate withdrawal symptoms. PSYCHOLOGICAL ADDICTION We learn to associate smoking with certain behaviors involving people, places, activities, and moods. These are called situational triggers and can derail your quit attempt if you are not prepared for them. Fortunately, there are many ways to overcome cigarette addiction. Keep reading to find out how.

3 DON T LET TRIGGERS SLIP YOU UP Here are some common triggers and coping strategies to help you manage the triggers that tempt you most. MORNING ROUTINE Switch up your morning routine by doing something different, like jumping in the shower right when you get up. BARS/ALCOHOL Try to avoid bars for the first few weeks of quitting. Instead, go to the movies, the park, the theater, etc. SEEING OTHER PEOPLE SMOKING Avoid taking breaks with smokers or ask them not to smoke around you. NEGATIVE MOODS AND STRESS Practice deep breathing and positive affirmations such as I can do this! COFFEE Drink your coffee at a nonsmoking venue. If you re at home, try a different room. WHAT DO I DO IF I SLIP UP AND HAVE A CIGARETTE? The most important thing to do is stay positive and forgive yourself. Throw away your cigarettes and continue following your quit plan. REWARD YOURSELF FOR YOUR SUCCESSES Plan a fun evening with friends Go on a weekend trip or vacation Go to the movies Purchase yourself a gift Spend time with your family Go out for a delicious meal or cook one yourself

Your heart attack risk begins to drop and lung function begins to improve 2 weeks to 3 months. 12 hours 1 month The carbon monoxide level in your blood drops to normal. Your coughing and shortness of breath decrease 1 to 9 months. 1year 10 Your added risk of coronary heart disease is half that of a smoker s. Your lung cancer death rate is about half that of a smoker s. Your risk of cancers of the mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, kidney, and pancreas decreases Your stroke risk is reduced to that of a nonsmoker s 5 to 15.
