REACHING OUR GOAL. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in Michigan. It was responsible for 30.7% of all deaths in Washtenaw County alone. Since 1949, the American Heart Association has invested over $3.3 billion in studies that led to medical advances such as artificial heart valves, CPR, pacemakers, cholesterol drugs, microsurgery and drug-coated stents. In , research dollars for Michigan amounted to $10,071,757 for 56 studies.
