Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Prevention, awareness and education

Agenda -Sexual abuse towards kids is an adult issue. -There always are hidden consequences. -Want to have effect our society? -Prevention. -Get involved and protect kids.

Sexual abuse toward kids is an adult issue One in five girls and one in 10 boys are sexually abused before their 18 th birthday. 17 % of children in Iceland are sexually abused before their 18 th birthday. One in five kids are being sexually solicited while on the Internet. Nearly 40% are abused by older or stronger kids.

Sexual abuse is more common than people realize 93% of all victims know and trust their abusers. Over 80% of sexual abuse cases occur in one adult, one child situation. People who abuse kid look and act just as everyone else. In fact, they go out of their way to appear trustworthy and obtain access to kids.

The vast majority of children know their offender Places of offence 6% in the car of the offender 10% outdoors 13% in the home of the offender and the child 18% in the home of the child 21% other 32% in the home of the offender - It s not the stranger in the dark whom we are trying to protect our children from!

Immediate consequenses of child sexual abuse? -Emotional and mental health problems are often the first consequence and sign of child sexual abuse. -Sexual behavior problems and over-sexualized behavior are a very common consequence of child sexual abuse. -Academic problems in childhood are a common symptom of sexual abuse. Substance abuse problems beginning in childhood or adolescence are some of the most common consequences of child sexual abuse. Delinquency and crime, often stemming from substance abuse, are more prevalent in adolescents with a history of child sexual abuse

Sexual and physical abuse of kids is linked directly to alcohol based problems among women -There exists a strong association in having a history of child abuse and problems of alcoholism. -Women who suffered sexual or physical abuse as children are apt to misuse alcohol than others. Child sexual abuse is a direct source of numerous problems we are faced with % of sexual abuse victims report excessive drug and alcohol use. Young girls who are sexually abused are more likely to develop eating disorders. More than 60% of first teen pregnancies are preceded by experiences of abuse or rape.

How do we remove the stigma of trauma, abuse, and addiction? Drug and alcohol dependence (70-80%) Depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and anxiety (80 90%) Suicidal thoughts/attempts (20-30%) Difficulty forming long-term relationships

How do we remove the stigma of trauma, abuse, and addiction? Eating Disorders Sexual risk taking that leads to teen pregnancy (60%) preceded by sexual abuse) and sexually transmitted diseases, including AIDS Prostitution (>90% have been sexually abused) Delinquency

Early death Increased chance of suicide Extensive trauma victims had a life span almost 2 decades shorter. (acestudy.org)

Consequences ACE-Study: The ACE Study used a simple scoring method to determine the extent of each study participant's exposure to childhood trauma. Conclusions: Found a strong graded relationship between the breadth of exposure to abuse or household dysfunction during childhood and multiple risk factors for several of the leading causes of death in adults. acestudy.org

Building a better future, one child at a time. Prevention, awareness and education For adults For teenagers For Kids Talk to teenagers about child sexual abuse, consequences and the importance of getting help for the whole family. Teach respect for self, others and healthy relationships. Teach them the langue of boundaries and healthy communications. Tell them where to go for help.

How can we educate government leaders about further investment in prevention? How can we educate adults about the importance of prevention? How can we educate victims of sexual abuse that healing and help is possible? How can we offer further services to women of abuse and trauma to keep them from the vicious cycle of drugs, alcohol and nicotine abuse? How do we remove the stigma of trauma, abuse, and addiction? Drug and alcohol misuse is for many the best solution to numb the pain of trauma, neglect and abuse?
