1 Chapter 1 NOTES Lesson 1 The Health Continuum 1) Your health is dynamic or subject to change. Lifestyle Factors 2) What are lifestyle factors? Habits 3) List 10 lifestyle factors that promote good health. Getting 8-10 hours of sleep each night Starting each day with a healthy breakfast Eating a variety of nutritious foods each day Being physically active for at least 20 minutes a day, 3 or more days a week Maintaining a healthy weight Avoiding tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs Abstaining from sexual activity before marriage Managing stress Maintaining positive relationships Practicing safe behaviors to prevent injuries The Nation's Health Goals 4) What are two main goals Healthy People 2010 has established for the future? Increase quality and years of healthy life for all Americans Remove health differences that result from factors such as gender, race, education, diability and location 5) List ways individuals can improve their own health, and thus contribute to the health of the nation. Make informed decisions Access reliable health care information and services Promote the health of others 6) List ways families can improve the health of individuals and thus contribute to the health of the nation. Shape attitudes and beliefs that result in healthful behaviors Teach children the values and skills to maintain good health 7) List ways communities can improve the health of individuals and thus contribute to the health of the nation. Provide health services and other behavior changing classes Take steps to ensure a safe environment

They are in touch with their feelings and can express them in appropriate ways They can usually deal with the frustrations of life without being overwhelmed They avoid dwelling on negative thoughts, instead they use positive thoughts and actions to move forward

A safe environment allows good physical and mental/emotional health A high crime rate results in stress or concern for personal safety Pollen, Dust or smog in the air can cause allergies Living with a smoker can increase the risk of respiratory problems

Loyal and supportive friends who care about their health can have a positive effect on your own health Peers who take part in dangerous, unhealthy, or illegal behaviors like using tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs could create pressure for you to be "part of the group" 19) What are parts of cultural environment? An ethnic group A community A Nation A part of the world The language your family speaks The foods you enjoy The traditions you have The religion you practice Attitude 20) Why is it important to be aware of your overall attitude about life? It affects the choices you make. Behavior 21) How can your behavior affect your health? You can control your behavior, such as what you eat You can master skills, which enhances your self-esteem You can resolve conflicts, which helps relationships Technology 22) Explain a positive and negative effect of technology on health. Positive- Advances in medical screenings and treatment for diseases Negative- Technology has replaced many physical activities Chapter 1 NOTES Lesson 3 Understanding Health Risks 23) What are two steps you can take in becoming responsible for your health? Increase your awareness of risk behaviors in your life Examine your current behaviors and make any necessary changes
5 Recognizing Risk Behaviors 24) List six categories of teen risk behaviors for which information is gathered in the Youth Risk Behaviors Survey. Behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries Tobacco use Alcohol and other drug use Sexual behaviors that contribute to unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STI's) (Including HIV infection) Unhealthy dietary behaviors Physical inactivity 25) Most teens are: NOT drinking alcohol NOT using tobacco USING safety belt Cumulative Risks and Consequences 26) Explain how risks can accumulate over time. Smoking cigarettes Eating high-fat meals Sunburns 27) Explain how combinations of risk factors can cause more serious consequences than each individual risk factor alone. Speeding - No seat belt - bad weather Abstaining from Tobacco, Alcohol, and Other Drugs 28) For each category listed below, give a serious consequence of using tobacco, alcohol, or other drugs. A. Physical and psychological health- Can cause addiction and can seriously harm the body. Can even cause death. B. Social health- Often isolates a person from family and friends. C. Legal cosequences- 21 to purchase, possess, or consume alcohol. 18 to purchase tobacco (some 21). The purchase or use of other drugs is illegal for any age.
6 Abstaining from Sexual Activity 29) What are positive results of choosing to abstain from sexual activity? Never have to worry about unplanned pregnancy. 100 percent effective. Never be faced with being a single parent Never have to take on the responsibilities of caring for a child Never have to worry about STI's or HIV Never have emotional problems that usually accompany sexual activity, such as guilt, regret, and rejection 30) A recent trend in our nation's health is: A decrease in the number of teens becoming parents
