So, What is an Overdose? Due to the body being overloaded with a substance, the metabolism is no longer able to detoxify the substance in order to minimise its most harmful effects.

Most common substance associated with overdose?

What does an overdose look like? TASK! Write a basic list of 3 or 4 symptoms you might look for when looking for signs of overdose

What does an overdose look like? TASK! Write a basic list of 3 or 4 symptoms you might look for when looking for signs of overdose

Overdose symptoms differ depending on the type of substance. Heroin Morphine Codeine Fentanyl Amphetamines Methamphetamines Cocaine Ritalin

Decreased heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature Feelings of euphoria Pain relief Drowsiness/Sedation

Dilation of pupils Increased heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature Loss of appetite Erratic behaviour Wakefulness

TASK! Categorise the symptoms of overdose into opioid or stimulant

Common issues leading to accidental overdose Combining Substances Quality Tolerance Using Alone Mode of Administration

Harm Reduction Tips - Combining Substances Use one drug at a time, or use less of each drug Try to avoid mixing alcohol with heroin/benzos Do the heroin first to better gauge how high you are. Alcohol and benzos impair judgment. Have a friend with you who knows what drugs you ve taken and can respond in case of an emergency

Harm Reduction Tips - Quality Test the strength of the drug before consuming all Try to buy from the same dealer so you have a better idea of what you re getting Get recommendations from people who have used the same dealer Be sure of the substance you re taking

Harm Reduction Tips Tolerance Use less when you are sick or you haven t used even a few days of abstinence or decreased use can lower your tolerance If you are using after a period of abstinence, be careful and go slow Do a small, weak first tester shot Use different method, i.e. snort instead of inject Opioids are harder for your liver to break down. Be especially careful if you have liver damage

Harm Reduction Tips Using Alone Fix with a friend It s more fun that way anyway! Leave the door unlocked or slightly ajar Call someone you trust and have them check on you Have some naloxone (syringe or nasal) ready???

Harm Reduction Tips Mode of Administration Be mindful that injecting and smoking can mean increased risk they deliver the drug more quickly to the brain Consider snorting, especially in cases when you re using alone or may have decreased tolerance f you inject, try and remove tourniquet after inserting and before injecting allows to better taste your shot and inject less if it feels too strong Be careful when changing modes of administration since you may not be able to handle the same amount

Overdose Management SEEK IMMEDIATE MEDICAL ATTENTION CALL 112 Give stimulation. (Rub sternum or upper lip) Administer Naloxone?? Keep the person awake and alert Perform rescue breathing

The Recovery Position

The Naloxone Debate Almost immediately counters the effects of opioid overdose, for example morphine and heroin overdose.
