Findings from the Scientific Evaluation: Who Uses InSite? A wide cross section of drug injectors uses the service. Tyndall, Mark, et al Attendance, drug use patterns, and referrals made from North America's first supervised injection facility. Drug and Alcohol Dependence, Volume 83, Issue 3, InSite has been successful in retaining IDUs at higher risk of infection & overdose, homeless/public drug users, young people (20s & 30s) & women at risk of violence. Wood, Evan, et al Do supervised injecting facilities attract higher risk injection drug users? American Journal of Preventive Medicine, Volume 29, Issue 2, Wood, Evan, et al Service uptake and characteristics of injection drug users utilizing North America's first medically supervised safer injection facility. American Journal of Public Health, Volume 96, Stoltz, Jo Anne, et al Characteristics of young illicit drug injectors who use North America's first medically supervised safer injecting facility. Addiction Research and Theory, Volume 15, Issue 1, Wood, R Alan, et al Nurse delivered safer injection education among a cohort of injection drug users: Evidence from the evaluation of Vancouver's supervised injection facility. International Journal of Drug Policy, Volume 19, Issue 3, Fairbairn, Nadia, et al Seeking refuge from violence in street based drug scenes: Women's experiences in North America's first supervised injection facility. Social Science and Medicine, Volume 67, Issue 5,

Findings from the Scientific Evaluation: InSite Saves Lives There have been a large number of overdoses within InSite, and zero fatalities to date. Kerr, Thomas, et al Drug related overdoses within a medically supervised safer injection facility. International Journal of Drug Policy, Volume 17, Issue 5, InSite may have prevented between 6 and 37% of the total overdose deaths in the community. Milloy, MJ, et al Estimated drug overdose deaths averted by North America's first medically supervised safer injection facility. PLoS One, 2008, Volume 3, Issue 10, e3351. The fatal overdose rate in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside decreased by 35% after the opening of InSite. Supervised injection facilities clearly have an important part to play in communities affected by injection drug use. Marshall, Brandon, et al Reduction in overdose mortality after the opening of North America's first medically supervised safer injecting facility: a retrospective population based study. Lancet, Volume 377, Issue 9775,

Findings from the Scientific Evaluation: InSite Connects Users to Drug Treatment Weekly use of InSite and any contact with the facility's addictions counselor were independently associated with quicker entry into a detoxification program. Wood, Evan et al Attendance at Supervised Injecting Facilities and Use of Detoxification Services. New England Journal of Medicine, Volume 354, InSite s opening was associated independently with a 30% increase in detoxification service use. Wood, Evan et al. 2007, Rate of detoxification service use and its impact among a cohort of supervised injecting facility users. Addiction, Volume 102, Issue 6, InSite connects clients with addiction treatment, resulting in greater likelihood of stopping injection drug use altogether. DeBeck, Kora et al Injection drug use cessation and use of North America's first medically supervised safer injecting facility. Drug & Alcohol Dependence, Volume 113, Issue 2,

Findings from the Scientific Evaluation: InSite Does Not Increase Crime In the year after Insite opened, there were no increases in drug trafficking or assaults/robbery in the surrounding neighborhood and there was a decline in vehicle break ins/vehicle theft. Wood, Evan et al Impact of a medically supervised safer injecting facility on drug dealing and other drug related crime. Substance Abuse Treatment, Prevention and Policy, Volume 1, 1 4. No overall changes in rates of crime recorded by police, though a private security company reported reductions in crime in the surrounding business district. Health Canada Vancouver's InSite service and other supervised injection sites: What has been learned from research? Final report of the Expert Advisory Committee Canada's national police force concludes that supervised injection sites do not increase crime. Cohen Potus Consulting, Royal Canadian Mounted Police [NEED FULL REFERENCE.]

Findings from the Scientific Evaluation: InSite Saves Healthcare Dollars Mathematical models of the saving from prevention of HIV infection and overdose death show InSite s cost benefits ratios ranging from 1.5 to Health Canada Vancouver's InSite service and other supervised injection sites: What has been learned from research? Final report of the Expert Advisory Committee. InSite has been shown to save over $6 million per year. Andresen, Martin & Boyd, Neil, A cost benefit and cost effectiveness analysis of Vancouver's supervised injection facility. International Journal of Drug Policy, Volume 21, Issue 1, InSite was found to decrease needle sharing, increase knowledge of safe injection practices and referral to methadone maintenance, and increase safe injection practices, which is predicted to save up to $20 million and 1070 life years over a ten year period. Bayoumi, Ahmed & Zaric, G Cost effectiveness of the Vancouver safe injection facility. Canadian Medical Association Journal,
